I’m Just Sayin’: Madonna Please Put Your Choo-Cha Away

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Last month I gave you “My Two Cents” about the Madonna for Louis Vuitton campaign.  Guess what?  I have more “cents.”  Did you honestly think I would see the picture above and NOT have something to say?  In my first post, I was over Madonna in leotards.  Now, not only am I over Madonna in leotards, I am over crotch shots.  It’s so vulgar.  Why does one of the most iconic luxury brands need a money shot to sell its product?  I didn’t get her as a choice for a model, and I do not get this photo.  Madonna please stop.  I want to remember you in all of your Everybody, Borderline and Holiday glory.  You’ve gotten older.  Please age gracefully.  Madonna, please put your choo-cha away . . . I’m just sayin’.

DG Water Project - Ladies, Your Help Is Needed!

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

This week, Digital Gravel debuted The Water Project, a charity fundraising drive to raise $14,000 to buy a clean water PlayPump for a village in Africa.

The DG Water Project is our first full-fledged charity project. We have teamed up with 10 of your favorite brands who have all donated their time and skills to create a limited edition set of tees. This collection will only be printed on 24 men’s tees, 12 women’s tees and 24 hooded sweatshirts. All proceeds from the sale of these items will go towards building a clean water playpump in Africa which can easily deliver clean water to a village of 2,500 people for 10 years. Please help us support this great cause! For more information on playpumps please visit, http://www.playpumps.org.

If you visit the site, you will see that many of the designs, from brands like The Hundreds, Staple Design, Nonsense, and 3Sixteen are sold out for men, but there are still some tees available for the ladies. So there is still an opportunity to pitch in, and help them reach their goal of $14,000. In the meantime, you also get a limited edition t-shirt that by simply sporting, you can help spread awareness to the cause of simply and easily providing clean water to people in need in impoverished areas of Africa, by doing something as simple as building playgrounds for children.

After the jump, check out the remaining designs that still have stock in women’s sizes. Click on them to go directly to the site for purchase.

And The Winner Is…Ruby Veridiano-Ching’s “Miss Universe” Contest

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

After reading through every entry to her “Miss Universe” Contest Ruby Veridiano-Ching has selected a winner! Hailing from Florida State University, Marisa Munnings won a copy of Ruby’s book, “Miss Universe” and a pair of the exclusive earrings designed by Ruby herself, and created by the ladies of Made Jewelry. Here’s what Ruby had to say about selecting Marisa as the winner:

It was such a difficult choice to make because we had so many beautiful and poignant contest entries, but this one hit me the most. I felt like it was represented really well for the teenage female psyche, and definitely aligned with the sentiments and ideas I expressed in Miss Universe- Miss Universe is a testament for the female heart, thought, emotion, and strength, and I think this piece embodied that.

Thank-you to all that entered the contest! Read Marisa Munnings winning poem, entitled “Baby Girl” after the jump! (more…)

Eartha Kitt R.I.P.

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Eartha Kitt, the legendary singer, dancer and actress passed away today from colon cancer at the age of 81.  Most famous for her role as cat woman (to my generation), her infamous purrr made her an icon.  She was a true talent and is an inspiration for breaking new ground in an industry where she paved the way for women of color.  It’s a sad day in entertainment history today, but Ms. Kitt’s purrrr will last forever.

Fo’ Real Though: Dramatel, The Almost Ilegal Phone Card

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

oh, damn! Just when you thought you’ve seen it all. I swore I was watching some sorta SNL short when a friend sent me this video. Just waiting for Justin Timberlake to pop up with his junk inna box or something but that never happened. And it just seemed too real, too serious and sure enough it is. Dramatel is the “Almost Ilegal Phone Card”. Marketed towards those who want to catch a cheating spouse/BF/GF, catch those who are avoiding your calls, or tricking people into thinking your somewhere your not. Apparently the card can manipulate your number that shows up on the receivers phone, change your voice to sound like a man or women (WTf?), oh, the list goes on. Dr. Drama can show you the way with his tutorial. Don’t know about you but sounds like you might be asking for mo’ drama with this one. Fo’ real though, what are they gonna think of next.

Recession Special: Paul Smith Totes

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

It seems like tote bags are the newest platform for touting the state of the environment, and now, the economy.  Paul Smith says ditch the stocks and bonds, instead, he cheekily suggests keeping your cash in his tote. You can get the bag online and it’s selling for a mere 10 British Pounds. This is a really clever tote and would be a cute gift or gift holder.  Check out more views of the bag after the jump.

“Prop 8 - The Musical”

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

I have held my tongue on this issue for fear of people seeing me as the raving lunatic that I can be. How Prop 8 even came into being is mind boggling to me. That people continuously find reasons to hate is beyond me. That people forget this country was founded by people fleeing religious persecution confuses me. That people forget the U.S.A. is based on the principle that there should be a separation of church and state is sad. The result? Hatred written into the California state constitution based on a campaign of hate and deceit mostly funded by Mormons. Really? Are we really taking marriage advice from polygamists? The passage of Prop 8 was very upsetting to me, and many people in and outside of California. This video was the one good thing to come out of this. The fight is not over. Please continue to educate those around you and promote tolerance and respect.

I’m Just Sayin’: Sneaker Companies Should Sponsor Iraqi Journalists

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

This morning President Bush dodged 2 shoes being thrown at his head, by an Iraqi journalist, at a ceremony in Iraq. Unfortunately, the journalist missed but I think this would make for a great shoe ad campaign, no? Nike, adidas? Are you guys looking for someone new to sponsor??  That journalist is someone to look up to.  I’m just sayin’ . . .

My Two Cents: Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Countdown

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

In March 2009, Jimmy Fallon will join the ranks of Johny Carson, David Letterman, Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien as a late-night talk show host with his new show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.  I have to admit, I’ve had a tiny crush on Jimmy Fallon since his SNL days, especially because of his stint on Weekend Update.  But, I’m not here to talk about that.  I’m here to talk about his pretty genius campaign to build hype for his new show.  I think it’s genius because he’s really utilizing all the new media and “web 2.0″ that he has at his disposal.  He’s set up a blog where he “vlogs” or posts video entries where he shows you the behind the scenes of getting the show together.  In his first entry, he shows you “Studio 6″ where he’ll be filming his show - a studio once used by Milton Berle and Johnny Carson.  He lets you know that you can submit questions on his site and he will answer them.  At the end of the first entry he introduces us to his house band - none other than Phillytown’s THE ROOTS!  Crazy.  The hype machine is working - I already want to tune it.

For his next episode we see Jimmy reading comments to his blog post (he actually reads them!) and we get to see the model for his new set.  In my industry it’s been customary to see “behind the scene’s blogs” - hell, I’m guilty of it myself.  I’ve blogged about being at the screen printer, fulfilling orders and attending tradeshows.  But, this is the first time I’m seeing this kind of “behind the scenes” action for a television show - and I have to say, it’s interesting.  Most people have never been exposed to the inner workings of a television show, so to share that is a pretty big deal.  His second post ends with Jimmy linking and plugging all the social medial sites that he’s on - and I mean all.  I don’t think I saw any social media site missing from that page.  You can myspace, facebook, tweet, flicker, etc., to your heart’s content.  He even has a Yelp page - I had no idea you could “Yelp” someone, but apparently you can.

Jimmy Fallon (or he and his marketing team) are definitely taking the interactive experience to a whole new level.  I think this is the start of something that we’ll see a lot more of as people watch more stuff online these days - might as well get them while they’re on the computers, right?  Bravo to Jimmy Fallon.  His blog is working, he’s already got a viewer.  To be a part of the experience visit his site.

His first entry:
