With the Fashion World looking forward to Fall 09 already, it’s kind of odd that Nine West is all about looking back. But, in this case, odd works, as the moderately priced shoe brand brings back major trends from both the ’70s and ’90s with touches of modernity and a whole lot of fun!
Drawing from disco days of yore, Nine West featured a bevvy of platform sandals for fall in a variety of fabrics and textures. Lush navy suede stood out as one of the most popular fabric choices, giving the 70s styles a modern, nighttime worthy feel. Ever the popular fabric, suede came in shades other than navy, featured most memorably in a muted tan on a cute pair of studded platform clogs that looked like they came straight off the heels of a Flower-Power darling. Beyond suede, heels were high, and shine was higher, as platforms sandals with wooden heels and glitter-infused metallic uppers made their presence known. A stand-out pair featured elegant cut-out detailing that gave it more of a contemporary feel.
Also a throw-back to the 70s was the resurgence of the stacked heel boot, which Nine West unveiled in Disco Night worthy tan suede (with chain detailing). Drawing more from the 70s punk side of things was a Vivienne Westwood-esque, more punked-out version of the stacked heel boot adorned with studs and chains.

Parisian brand LUTZ has paired up with footwear designer Robert Clergerie to present LUTZ By Robert Clergerie. This limited edition collection for SS09 features two silhouettes both offered in two color-ways. The styles mix different types of leathers: varnished, aged and waxed with a variety of straps and elastics resulting in feminine yet powerful designs. Robert Clergerie is a shoemaker that I have adored for some years. Clergerie’s designed tend to be bold and rather substantial, usually clunky heels, platformed soles or wedges. This collaboration between these Parisian design houses is a beautiful marriage between quality and craftsmanship and modern femininity.

Last week we told you that Proenza Schouler had announced that they would be releasing a footwear line. We just got a sneak peak of one of the styles and I have to say that I think it represents the designers well and is true to their aesthetic. I love the traingular heel and the contrast in materials and colors. The shoe is very unique - definitely a statement piece - the kind of shoe you build outfits around. The duo has also designed other styles including ballet slippers, loafers, lace-up sandals and heels and will be available in the upcoming resort season. The shoes will range in price from $300 to $3,000 with an average cost of $685. When asked the next logical question about when a bag range is coming out, Lazaro Hernandez stated: “It’s because we didn’t have anything to say yet. The entire market is so dense with bags and everything else, that until we found something original and specific to say, we didn’t want to say anything. We don’t do anything unless we have something to say.” All I know is that I can’t wait to see what they have to “say.”

Proenza Schouler is launching a footwear line to coordinate with its apparel collections. The young men behind the label have been fashion superstars since their debut collection and I’m really looking forward to see what they come up with for our feet. They are releasing select style for resort and a full line for Spring 2009. I hope this means we can expect to see the boys expanding into other product categories like handbags and beauty. Only time will tell . . .
