It was a sunny day in SF when our Editor-in-Chief GDK (initials are in order cause she’s just that gangster!) headed out to the Sunglass Hut for the launch of the eye wear chain’s collaboration with contemporary artist Maya Hayuk, as part of their second Artists Series collaboration outreach. The Brooklyn based multi-medium artist, who is best known for her usage of clever overlaid patterning combined with bombastic colorings, created 150 unique sunglasses for the collection in a variety of bold shades and patterns. The free-hand patterning and layered materials on the eye wear are extremely reminiscent of Hayuk’s recent mural and installation work, including one of my favorites, the A Path for the Light Pyramid installation. The artist shared some of her favorite designs, including a pretty Madras print, and a pastel airbrushed and spray-painted pair. Peep our video exclusive below to hear more of Hayuk’s inspirations, both beautiful and bizarro, for the limited collection, and see the sunnies up close and in detail!
