Long before Anime and Harakuju became popular in the United States, there was one character that was synonymous with Japanese Kawaii culture - Hello Kitty. The Hello Kitty that is adored by children and adults alike today was imagined in 1974 and in the 1980s Yuko Yamaguchi picked up the design reigns. Since then Hello Kitty has become a global sensation and this can be credited in large part to Yamaguchi. By remaining current, identifying global trends, and through collaborations, Yamaguchi has insured that Hello Kitty will be a part of pop culture for a very long time. Yamaguchi has created a timeless icon and made history.
