We have 2 winners for our Wonder Woman Blu-Ray DVD Contest! We had many great entries but we chose Danae & and Zavi!! Check out what they had to say about Wonder Woman:
Danae said:
Wonder Woman was the first female super hero to break into the mainstream. I love her because she’s given girls like me a comic book to enjoy that wasn’t just for the boys. She has allowed female characters to be something other than the male super heros girlfriend, vixen,or lady in distress. Although there were some great characters before her, she was the only one who came from an influence of only women and managed to take on the toughest fights facing the universe. Everything she is and does represents what women aspire to be. Tough yet compassionate, smart but not intimidating, and beautiful but not conforming. I love comic books. I’ve studied them and taught myself how to draw in my own comic style. Im in my first year of college and im excited because my dream of working in the comic book industry has just begun. Wonder Woman has inspired me to be greater then i thought I could ever be and Im sure she has for many others.
Zavi stated:
I love Wonder Women because she’s Amazon royalty ,a Super Heroine ,and one of the ultimate fictional female warriors. She’s strong beautiful and has her OWN mind, shes does what’s right even if it means going against what the crowd, or even what her mother /her people think. Although she’s powerful and capable, she knows she is not perfect, she’s always willing to learn more, to be helped, and to consider another point of view unlike some male super heroes.
Attention comic fans in the midst of M.I.S.S.! if you don’t already know, Wonder Woman is the fourth installment of the DC Universe animated series. Even though it’s direct-to-dvd, everything from the animation to music score is top notch. You might even recognize Keri Russell (Felicity) as the voice for Wonder Woman. The dvd is on sale now but M.I.S.S. will be giving away 2 BLU-RAY DVDs and Wonder Woman tiaras to 2 lucky contest winners. As a girl who once rocked a Wonder Woman lunchbox in elementary school, I’m not ashamed to say I’m pretty stoked about this. Check the clip from the movie and you’ll see that this flick is no sugar and all spice. Whether you know the story behind Wonder Woman or not, the leading lady of DC Comics is bound to get you pumped with the feeling of female empowerment (just in time for Women Making History month). And if you have a man who appreciates comics, Wonder Woman, or women who can kick ass in general, this animated movie will be sure to please.
All you have to do to win is leave a comment telling us why you love Wonder Woman. We’ll select 3 winners from the comments. Good Luck and may the best comments win!!
** Update** All entries must be in by Monday, March 16th!
Back in May, we wrote about a Wonder Woman-inspired collection Diane von Furstenberg designed for this upcoming holiday season. To commemorate the launch of her collection, DVF has authored “Be the Wonder Woman You Can Be, Featuring the Adventures of Diva, Viva & Fifa,”? a comic book illustrated by Konstantin Kakanias.
“I am Diva, Viva and Fifa altogether, I am DVF,”? von Furstenberg said. “It’s not so much that I identify with each of them, though. The idea is that if you feel insecure, look at yourself in the mirror, and through the reflection remember to be the Wonder Woman you can be. That’s my message.”?
The comic includes “essays by Gloria Steinem and Les Daniels about the original Wonder Woman, a reprint of the superheroine’s first adventure, as well as several of the first covers.” The comic will sell for $25 and proceeds will benefit Vital Voices, a non-profit that empowers women. As a giant Wonder Woman fan, I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these! They’ll definitely be collector’s items and the icing is that it helps out a great cause.
Last week I posted about an animated Wonder Woman movie slated for release in February 2009. I recently got a tip from “Diana” (could it have been Princess Diana herself?!) about a trailer that was released at Comic-Con. I found an ok version that you can view below but if you want to see the really good one check out the one on Yahoo here. Also, it looks like the movie isn’t going to be in theaters but is going straight to DVD, Blu-ray and On Demand. I’m hoping that they make a real movie soon!!
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. I love Wonder Woman. I had the underoos as a kid and on any summer day you’d find me spinning around my backyard warding off evil with my imaginary wrist cuffs. Wonder Woman has had many reincarnations and her latest is for an animated DVD movie called, not surprisingly, Wonder Woman. The animated movie is set to release in February 2009 and Keri Russell is providing the super heroine’s voice. Explaining the plot of the film, Russell stated: “The movie tells the Amazon princess’ origin story. ‘She’s a true, strong warrior, but she’s also right at the break of being a young woman standing on her own and fighting out in the world,’ Russell says.”
We’ve seen a resurgence of Superhero movies lately including Iron Man, The Hulk and now The Dark Knight. There have been rumors for years about a film version of Wonder Woman but it seems the project keeps stalling. So, I’m taking some time out to say: Please get that project up and running! Girls can be super too! In this time when girls are bombarded with poor role models, from The Bratz to Britney, we need Wonder Woman to come back to show young girls that ladies can be beautiful, strong, powerful and independent. Please start making less movies about cheerleaders and drama queens, and focus on empowering young women. If you make it, they will come.
Back when I was working on Cybelle, circa 2004, an artist got in touch with us to let us know about these paintings of sneakers he was doing. I thought they were cool, and next thing I knew, Dave White was everywhere. He was the official sneakerhead painter and his paintings of his favorite kicks could be seen everywhere from gallery walls to Sneaker Pimps exhibitions. It’s wonderful to see how far he’s come with painting what he loves.
In his newest works, Dave White is showing us a different side, a side that loves comic books. His latest pieces Superheroes and Villains are large scale oil paintings portraying characters including Wonder Woman, Superman, Bat Man, Bat Girl, The Hulk, Captain America and Spiderman. Despite his change in subject, you can still see Dave White’s signature style shine through with drips, splats and texture. My favorite, of course, is Wonder Woman. I’ve been a fan of hers since I was about four and still remember spinning around to undergo my superhero transformation!
Some of Dave White’s pieces from Superheroes and Villains can be currently viewed at a show called Amerikanische Kunst & Pop Art in Frankfurt, Germany through October 15th. His work will be hanging alongside masters such as Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol! If you can’t make it to Frankfurt check out the gallery site and I’ve got more photos for you after the jump.
Diane von Furstenberg was inspired by none other than Princess Diana, aka Wonder Woman, for her holiday collection. DVF teamed up with Warner Brothers to produce a small capsule collection including footwear, small leather goods and ready to wear inspired by the comic superheroine. I love Wonder Woman, she was my favorite super friend growing up and I wish DVF had designed a coreseted bodysuit and wrist cuffs. But she didn’t. Instead, she took inspiration from Wonder Woman motifs like stars, stripes, corsetry, and fireworks. The collection will be in stores on October 22nd and DVF is releasing 3 gift items in time for holiday: a t-shirt, a travel blanket with a pouch, and a journal.
For those of you too young to have had the pleasure of watching the TV show, check out the opening credits - you’ll see where DVF got some of her inspiration:
And of course, the infamous spin and lasso of truth:
