It wasn’t until managing the marketing and PR for her brother’s 5-Star Austin restaurant, Jean Luc’s Bistro that Sarah first caught the bug for public relations. Sarah Circkiel tackles the M.I.S.S. survey!

Sarah Cirkiel spends some Q & A time with M.I.S.S.:

M.I.S.S.: What woman, besides your mom or grandmother, do you find inspirational?

A lot of women inspire me but not mentioning my mother or both my grandmothers make it tough. My Mom has her own real estate firm with 26 agents, one Grandma worked at the Pentagon during WWII & the other Grandmother wrote poetry and made significant civic changes in the community. There have also been quite a few men in my life that inspire me. Beyond that I’d say that the former governor of Texas, Ann Richards. This woman was an amazing leader and had a lot of guts in a male dominated southern state. My closest girlfriends spread out between NYC, ATX and LA round out the list.

M.I.S.S.: How did you get your start?

(My New York start…) A girlfriend of mine suggested that I work as an assistant for the newly re-launched PRO-Keds sneaker brand. The PR director moved from London to help re-launch the brand in the U.S. shortly before I decided to move back from Austin. While here apartment hunting we were scheduled to meet, and unfortunately due to computer issues weren’t able to connect. My last night in NYC, we ended up running into each other at Max Fish officially met, played pool all night and voila. Next thing you know, I’m getting laced with kicks and flown to MAGIC two weeks later from Austin. I always thought my first time in Las Vegas I’d be in heels..little did I know I’d be rockin’ sneakers everyday. The rest is history!

M.I.S.S.: What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on?

I’ve worked on so many amazing projects and feel that here at Pitch Control we make it a point to be a part of unique and different campaigns. With one of our clients specifically, Karmaloop, we’ve been involved in some really cool initiatives. Some including Shepard Fairey’s 20th anniversary retrospective at the Institute of Contemporary Art to their partnership and fashion show with the Boston Ballet to name a few.

On a personal level, a project that my family and I started a number of years ago during the holiday season. We make a couple of hundred bags of lunches/care packages and hand them out around Austin to the underprivileged and homeless.

M.I.S.S.: Who would you like to work with in the future?

That’s hard because there are so many talented people out there to want to work with. I also look forward to continue building with my current network. If I were to narrow this list down to only one and keep it strictly in fashion, it would have to be Levis – the all American classic.

M.I.S.S.: What part of representing clients/running a PR company is the most challenging and do you dislike the most?

Collecting payment and seeing companies that have incredible potential but no funding to stay in business.

M.I.S.S.: Any advice for ladies who are just starting out in a career path similar to yours?

Advice across the board – Work hard, be honest and don’t ever give up. You can’t have good without bad so sometimes you’ll fall before you see the light.

VH1 Divas 2009

VH1 Divas 2009

VH1 Divas 2009

In case you missed, VH1 honored a new class of Divas Thursday night. Jordin Sparks, Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson, and Adele performed to a packed house at the Academy of Music in New York City. Lots of American Idol love, Paula must be proud.

Sweet Adele looking classy & stunning...

Adele looking classy & stunning, performed to a packed house at the Academy of Music in NYC.

Paula Abdul performed a montage of her hits to open the show. I was nervous for Paula, but she did alright, in fact, she looked great dancing around that set. Paula hosted as well. The evening was all about performance and duets. Jennifer Hudson was the first Diva to peform, showing off her svelte post baby bod. Kelly Clarkson followed with another ballad. Sweet Adele, her performance left me wanting more. Jordin Sparks was forgettable. Then there was Miley.

Miley Cyrus in the black dress, fishnets, and stellar heels on the red carpet was stunning. A bit revealing, but I’ve seen prom dresses worse. Miley can hit that mark just right sometimes, and then *boom* she hits the stage. Girl, when you put that on, couldn’t you tell it was ugly?  The size of that bow in the back of her dress looked like she strapped on a parachute and she was about to jump out of a plane. 1 out of 2, eh.

In addition to the Divas, the night played host to some great duets. India.Arie sang with Adele, Stevie Wonder performed with Jennifer Hudson, Cyndi Lauper did a great rendition of “True Colors” with Leona Lewis, Martina McBride and Jordin Sparks performed, Sheryl Crow sang with Miley, Melissa Etheridge and Kelly Clarkson closed the show.

Lauren Conrad dazzled in a green Alice and Oliva sparkler.

Stunners:

Sheryl Crow donned a Dolce Gabbana dress with Neil Lane costume jewelry. Whitney Port arrived in a gauzy La Perla dress and Giuseppe Zanotti heels. Lauren Conrad dazzled in a green Alice and Oliva sparkler, personal pick of best dressed of the evening.

VH1 Divas 2009: Leona Lewis' makeup artist gets high fives!

Highlights:

Keri Hilson finally won me over with an outfit.

Nene from the ATL Real Housewives introducing Adele, sure Kim from ATL and Bethany Frankel from NYC were there, but Nene reigns supreme in Housewive Land.

Leona Lewis’ makeup artist gets high fives for choosing just the right palette to make Leona look dynamite.

Miley’s face when she saw “the fat lady” in the balcony at the end of the show.

Girl Power y’all.

Always A Lady: A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

Always A Lady—Racy Pics

Always A Lady—A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

Everyone does it—and no one is safe. I’m talking about naked pictures. Humankind has appreciated them since evolution granted us an opposable thumb, a piece of flint, and a wall to scribble on. But considering the scope of today’s technology, hitting a simple “Upload” button can make you notorious for the sole purpose of showing your hoo-ha (Ask Kim Kardashian!). And while you’re praying that your barely computer-literate mother doesn’t Google you anytime in the next, oh I don’t know, 45 years, you’re silently fuming and asking yourself, “How the hell did I get in this mess?” Let’s go through a simple walk-through of the sequence of events as they may occur and how to prepare yourself. As with all ails, prevention is the best cure, but first, we’ll talk about how your ambition affects the likelihood of your intimate photographs being leaked.

What is your goal in life?

If it includes children’s programming, politics, academia, or “first-person-to-do-blank”, then you’re at the highest risk of damage. Common sense indicates that you probably shouldn’t take raunchy naked pictures ever if your role is to fulfill a contribution to the greater humanity. You’re allowed to funnel your untapped sexual exhibitionism in an alternate creative outlet, like an erotic screenplay or novel, but by all means, you will be stripped of your noble titles if pics surface of you in fuzzy handcuffs. Just don’t do it.

Next is PTA-mom, local pastor, and local pastor’s daughter, on the list of ruined reputation. While, yes, they’re whispering and looking in your direction, you might still be able to shrug it off and live in relative obscurity.  Or move outta your shit-small hometown, change your name, and hope no one gets too curious about you.

On the bottom of that list, entertainment, music, Miss U.S.A. contestants and talentless debutantes fear not, because sex sells and most likely you’ll turn it into a VH1 reality show spin-off.  You might be embarrassed at first.  But once the Playboy and Maxim offers funnel in, the money will ease the fall.  And in this society sex-sells. At the price of your dignity. For the regular person, it’s tough maintaining long-distance relationships and spans apart from your lover without utilizing technology to ease the separation.  Everyone has come home from a club, drunk and alone, missing their boo, and clumsily partaking in the one-armed photo shoot. It’s almost a rite-of-passage. But factor in the degrees of exposure of yourself and your reputation in the community, and you might be able to minimize the damage. After all, it is a possibility for all of us, known or unknown.

If you must do it, here’s how:

• Understand that anything taken on a camera has a high-likelihood of being stolen. While you can greatly reduce the chances of leaked photos by only capturing them on your devices and keeping it under lock and key, relocating, lending, or just being plain careless can put you at highest risk. Also, keep in mind that when you bring your laptop in to the Geek Squad, it’s their job to go through your hard drive.  Don’t give them a reason to call the coworkers after hours and gawk. If you are relatively known, the price of the picture itself can compensate a pink slip at Best Buy, easily. Take the pictures, move it into an external hard drive, and keep it in a high-security safe.  If it breaks, consider it a total loss.
