Follow the Leader, Episode 2: Va$htie Kola

In the second episode of our new three-part webseries, Follow the Leader, M.I.S.S. introduces you to Va$htie.

Fondly dubbed “Downtown’s Sweetheart” by various NYC trendsetters, Va$htie Kola’s instantly recognizable aesthetic proves that style is far beyond fashion. The director and designer is unmatched in her ability to reconstruct memorable moments from our cultural pasts (she cites inspirations as diverse at Depeche Mode and Big Daddy Kane), and merge them with the best of what’s current. Her wardrobe incorporates a steady diet of all things grunge (thrifted flannels and aged cut-offs) with higher-end centerpieces. The result is a unique personal style that speaks volumes about the type of person Va$htie is– geuninely excited and inspired by individuality in all its forms.

In the below episode of Follow the Leader, Va$htie reveals the sentiment and inspiration behind three of her favorite looks.

A special thanks to Pitch Control PR.

Fashion. Anyone can be in it, and just as quickly out of it. With the right magazines, in-season items, and bank account balance, anyone can keep up with fashion. Style, on the other hand, is a different animal. Style is much more than the items you wear, it’s how you put them together. It isn’t something that can be learned, it’s a natural part of you. M.I.S.S. gathered together some of New York’s most prominent taste makers currently influencing both fashion and style in the city to talk about what style means to them.

A new webseries, FOLLOW THE LEADER will celebrate the natural style of some of the current movers and shakers in what is arguable the most fashionable city in the world. Each episode will aim to capture the fearless style choices that New York locals are famous for, and find out the philosophy behind their styles. From the hat they bought at their favorite boutique, to the pair of earrings they received from a long time friend, we will learn that for the stylish, material goods always hold a deeper sentimental value. We will also dig to expose the social ramifications of style: what does being a punk, a dandy, a thug, a skater, a prep, a vintage lover, a hipster, a glam rocker, a nu waver, a nu raver– or anything else for that matter—mean in our society?

FOLLOW THE LEADER will, in its initial three episodes, profile the likes of modern pin-up extraordinaire Vintage Vandalizm, self proclaimed “Hood Tomboy meets Parisian Princess” designer and director Va$htie Kola, and the never-without-neckwear stylist Dandy Wellington. Join us as we explore what style means means to them.

Check out the promo for FOLLOW THE LEADER and stay tuned for the first episode to drop on M.I.S.S. very soon!

"Downtown's Sweetheart" Va$htie Kola's new website is up and running!

Direct, design, consult, write, promote and amass a nasty collection of Jordans–can one woman do it all and live to tell the tale? The answer is an emphatic yes, and we are not surprised that it’s M.I.S.S’s very own Woman Making History Va$htie Kola! The P.Y.T, known lovingly to her fans and peers as “Downtown’s Sweetheart”, has conquered nearly every field of the entertainment and media industries including designing her own successful line of streetwear, Violette. Va$htie got her start behind the camera after studying filmmaking at New York’s SVA, and has been working on videos for stars such as Jadakiss, Solange, and Kid Cudi ever since (In fact, did you know she was the chick behind the camera for the much loved C.R.S’s “Us Placers”? Still one of the sickest video concept we’ve seen in a while!). Besides directing, the woman also knows how to throw an awesome NYC  shindig– her infamous weekly Open Party with Q- Tip is quickly becoming a M.I.S.S fav!

Check out Va$shtie's blog for her videos, short films, fashions, and blog!

Featuring insights in the life and mind of a media gal extraordinare, as well as some hilarious musings on 21 Jump Street and a plethora of throwback videos that hit the spot,  the blog is now complete with a bright new re-design showcasing Vashtie’s work, contributions, and the fun-loving spirit we’ve all come to expect from Downtown’s Sweetheart! So make sure to take your little blog-browsing butts over to the new and improved Va$htie.com and get to commenting!
