Miss Techcessories: Retro Chic Flip Clock On Legs

Have you ever waken up in the middle of the night and been blinded by the LCD of your digital alarm clock?  Don’t you just hate how those numbers glare at you menacingly, reminding you you only have a few more hours until you have to be up?  How about you throw it out (or give it to a clock-less friend) and “downgrade” to something a little more vintage, like this flip clock on legs designed by Michael Daniel.  Normally, I don’t trust people whose last name could also be a first name, but I’ll make an exception this time because this clock perfectly merges modern design with old technology.  The best part, though, is that when the numbers flip over it actually looks like the clock is moving towards you.  At $88 it’s a little on the pricey side, but it’s cheaper than hopping on eBay and trying to get an old-timey flip clock.  Available now at Urban Outfitters.

Stepping Out To The Tux With Chucks Prom

Prom Pics At Tux With Chucks Prom

I haven’t worn a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors since I was in 5th grade, and used to trade one of my purple shoes with my friend for her pink one so we could be like Punky Brewster. But this weekend I found a great excuse to pick up a pair of sequined Chucks that I’ve kind of had my eye on for a while. I was invited by my friend Jed at Converse to step out to the Tux With Chucks Prom on Friday night at Studio B. Along with a few of our good friends, including artist Michael Schall who designed the 100 Pipes Chuck Taylors for the Converse 1HUND(RED) artists series this year, and Brian Carr, of New Jersey based t-shirt line Solid Threads, we laced up our Cons, got fresh dressed like a million bucks, took some kooky prom pictures and got down to the tunes all night.

Studio B was decorated with balloons, streamers, and adolescent-style hand made banners to give just the right touch of high school steez to accompany the raging tunes from the bands Crocodiles and The Japanese Motors. Finger On The Pulse DJs with Matty Royal provided tunes ranging from good old motown jams to 80’s new wave, recent house jams and Baltimore Club. The youthful prom goers came through in outfits varying from totally decked out with ruffles, frills, corsages, cummerbunds, vests and bow ties, to plain party casual and lined up in droves to take digital prom pictures provided by Death + Taxes Magazine. I stayed true to my actual black and shiny senior prom aesthetic from ages ago and  paired my new sequined black on black high top Chucks with an awesome vintage dress I picked up a couple of months back at a thrift store, a black elastic and patent leather belt to cinch it just right, a frilly red tulle slip from Patricia Field to give that baby some big prom volume,  and a silver bow tie for my hair.

After bouncing around on the dancefloor for a couple of hours with my friends and Jelly NYC’s Sarah Hooper, the only thing I felt the party was missing were some slow jams. But considering I came without a date, I guess I got off easy, since I had no desire to cuddle up to this dude who aggressively jumped into one of my prom portraits, called himself “Wheels”  and alternately tried to make out with me, lick my neck, and invite me out for ice cream. Wheels, if you’re out there reading this, the answer to all of your questions is still no.

Sorry this is late New Yorkers, but there is still some time to get down to Urban Outfitters and pick up a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors, and recieve two free tickets to the Tux With Chucks Prom at Studio B in Greenpoint on Friday night.  Every high school had one kid who came to the prom in sneakers. If it wasn’t you then, it can be you now.

FINN cultured+cured: Easy Pieces For Modern Youth

Some people truly believe that fashion is art, and over at FINN cultured+cured, fashion is not only art, it’s an integral aspect of our lives. The Montreal-based lifestyle brand recently released its Spring/Summer ‘09 collection, and along with that the brand is creating a movement that the good folks at FINN cultured+cured describe best themselves: “a fusion of sub-cultures that is BANG ON!… for the modern youth.”

Just a quick glance at the pieces from FINN cultured+cured’s collection proves that this brand is something unique - the type that doesn’t come along often. For S/S 2009, offerings include some traditional tanks and sundresses, with a bit of flare added in the detail. The white ruffle tank is an effortless way to punch up a pair of your favorite jeans or shorts, ideal for rocking to a friend’s summertime BBQ. Sundresses can sometimes be drab, but with bright colors (such as the colorblock tube dress) and unconventional cuts (the v-neck dress), you won’t have to worry about looking boring this spring.

Women Making History: Kerin Rose of A-Morir

A-Morir is a one-of-a-kind accessory line created by a lady who’s as unique as her poducts: Ms. Kerin Rose. For having a relatively young brand, word of this lovely and ecclectic soul is spreading fast. From the NY Post to MTV’s “The City” people are taking note.

The lady we honor today, as a Woman Making History, introduces herself below:

Hola. I’m Kerin Rose, owner/designer of A-morir. The accessory line, consisting of Swarovski encrusted glasses, headpieces and necklaces, has been around since the middle of this past October [2008]. I’ve been featured in Missbehave / Missbehavemag.com, Highsnobette.com, NY Post, NY Observer, AOL’s Stylelist blog, fashionweekdaily.com, the Urban Outfitters blog, I’m repped on MTV’s “The City” by the lovely Erin Lucas, and my Bizet frames were just in Jazmine Sullivan’s “Dream Big” video for 5 seconds… which is 5 seconds more than before!!

In addition to A-morir, I am the girl “Friday”/clothing designer for The Savant Guard, an incredible Brooklyn based record label. I have recently become a blogger for San Francisco’s Fatlace AND! I am also training for my first half marathon in 10 years with the Chrons and Colitis Foundation of America while my sister and I work on developing our 501c3 non-profit called We Love Your Guts. Please go to www.weloveyourguts.org to see what we’re about and help me in my fundraising efforts!

Kerin has a lot of amazing things going on and she’s more than deserving of the shine! We’ve got more on this crafty lady, after the jump!

Mirror, Mirror: It’s Pop It’s Art

A few weeks back the M.I.S.S. Crew was in full effect to check out It’s Pop It’s Art hosted by iLL-Literacy, a Bay Area spoken word crew. There were four of us that made it out: Lexx, Michelle, Liz and myself. Here’s a peak into what Lexx and I wore - Michelle and Liz’s outfits coming up shortly!

If I remember correctly, I was having a pretty bad day and had to drag myself out of the apartment. Comfort is always key for me and I took it to new heights by going out in sweatpants. I know, I know, I am officially contributing to the pajamafication of the U.S.A. It’s not my fault that they are the best sweatpants EVA. Anyway, you heard it here first, Sweatpants Are The New Black.

Nike Tops on UrbanOutfitters.com

nike
The ladies at Nike were nice enough to send along some of their newest tops and of course, we took it as an excuse to put together a lil’ photoshoot at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. The tops are perfect for summer - who doesn’t love half tops and muscle tanks? The inspiration for the tops came from vintage Nike pieces found at local thrift stores in Beaverton, Oregon. As the birthplace and current home of Nike, there’s a lot of that kind of stuff there (now you know where to find it!). The tank was inspired by old school muscle tanks with deep arm holes and dolphin hems. The half-top or “shimmel” is traditionally used under a football uniform but was a big hit in the 80’s so Nike kindly resurrected that for us as well.

The tops were made exclusively for Urban Outfitters and you can find the tank top here and the cropped-top here.
