Women Making History: Roxy Cottontail

We couldn’t let Easter go by without bringing you lovely readers something special! Today we bring you an extra special Women Making History feature highlighting our favorite New York bunny, Roxy Cottontail!

Now, Roxy Cottontail is the kind of girl books are written about. She came to New York with dreams, drive and a tube of lip-gloss ready to work her little Cottontail off and make people come together, dance and have a damn good time. From Baltimore to Philadelphia, she has been around the musical block picking up friends, acts and experience along the way. She helped establish Diplo and Low Budget, of the legendary Hollertronix party, as well as Spankrock’s rap career and even booked one of Chromeo’s first NYC shows.

Her skills, talent and varied tastes have helped her rise to the top of the promoting, DJing, hip-hop and fashion worlds. Her signature style is part of everything she touches and has deep roots in punk, electro, dance, house, hip-hop, reggae and rock. Ms. Cottontail hosts her infamous Monday night party at Sway and assorted events all over the world. She hustles on a regular basis. She hosted the second stage on certain dates of the Rock the Bells tour this summer and was recently featured on the cover of URB Magazine. This fall she debuted her new radio show with co-host and partner in crime DJ Melo X, aptly named Booty and the Beat. She writes a column for Missbehave Magazine and will be featured in upcoming issues of Wadklub (Paris) and Status Magazine (Manila). Because of her relentless DJ and live show tours, Roxy is known and loved nationally and internationally by a herd of fun loving bunnies around the globe. Roxy has DJed with DJ AM, Steve Aoki, Afrika Bambaataa, Stretch Armstrong, Ni** Sky and A-trak, just to name a few. She has thrown and hosted parties with live performances by Spankrock, Slick Rick, Devin the Dude and countless others. Her collaborations also carry into the studio where she has lent her voice to Armand van Helden, Drop the Lime and legendary Electroclash icon, Larry Tee.

DJs, and parties, and recording! Oh my! She does it all!

Women Making History: DJ ZITA

When have you ever peeped a fly sister smashing classic records all night long with shine, authority and pure flair?  Don’t trip, that baddest mamma jamma is Bay Area veteran lady DJ Zita, who brings her unforgettable mix of versatility and femininity to the turntables every time she puts needle to vinyl.  Her sound spans the eras and blends genres of body-rockin’ music; she’ll seamlessly segue from boombox classic hip hop to mothership trunk funk, spin smooth R&B treats along with timeless soul heroines and heroes, flip reggae dancehall riddims, throwback to ’80s pop freestyle, all the while rocking a gardenia in her hair and grooving like Prince made that jam especially for her to dance to…and you too will have no choice but move if MamaZita’s on the decks.  Since 2000, the incomparable DJ Zita has shocked dancefloors from the Philippines to Honolulu to New York to Sactown, the Bay Area and back down to LA and San Diego.

From that first brown plastic Fisher-Price record player she rocked her Salt-N-Pepa and Lisa Lisa 12″ singles on as a girl, to over 10 years of training in various forms of dance, to establishing Hawaii’s first all-female DJ collective in 2002 – the URB Magazine-lauded Sisters in Sound, to becoming a staple (and one of few women) in the San Francisco Bay Area club scene, to being the founder and promoter of the Bay Area Sistah Sound (B.A.S.S.), The Bay’s Premier Lady DJ Crew, DJ Zita has been putting it down for hip hop, artistry, and sisterhood, and she continues to grace the game and the wheels of steel with her golden touch.

Above is DJ Zita’s latest mix: WHERE MY LADIES AT? A Tribute to the Queens of True School Hip Hop.

DJ Zita came together with the lovely EyeASage and M.I.S.S. to offer a free exclusive download of the mix! Click HERE or on the image above to download the mix!

We have a lot more on this Bay Area heavyweight, after the jump!

Women Making History: Michelle Ten of Missfitstyles

Michelle Ten started Missfit Styles, an assortment of Fashion services ranging from styling, writing, and brand consulting, in 2004. In “game” years, that might as well be a full decade! Her clients include URB Magazine, XLR8R Magazine, Sean John, Chris Brown, Ludacris, Sean Kingston, and D Woods of Danity Kane, just to name a few.

Before this, Michelle was a fashion assistant at The Source Magazine. Leaving The Source to work on freelance assignments for artists like Ashanti and Full Surface Records, Michelle returned to The Source, at the height of the magazine, to act as Fashion Editor.

New York native Michelle Ten knew from an early age that she wanted to be in fashion. Cutting out her favorite looks from magazines like Vogue, Elle and Mirabella to create her own books out of photo albums. With fashion being her passion, she knew she wanted to have a career doing what she loves to do and this lady is doing it! This is why, today we honor Michelle Ten as a Woman Making History!

Michelle on some current and upcoming projects:

I’m a fashion stylist & personal shopper based out of new york. I work on celebrity and editorial projects along with ad campaigns and catalog. I’m a fashion consultant for t7live.com, styled Saturday Night comedian Fred Armisen for the cover of Urb magazine coming out March 2009. Did market for Mariah Carey in the Dream’s My Love video and recently styled New Era’s Fall 2009 catalog for their traditional apparel division.

Some on Michelle’s work:

Bottom left: Cream NYC Lookbook, Bottom right: The Peralta Project Fall 2008, where Michelle took men’s t shirts and had them made in different women’s silhouettes! So fun!

We have a Q&A with Michelle, including a handwritten survey and more, after the jump!

NIKE Sportswear at The Montalbán Presents CINEMA TUESDAYS: NOTORIOUS

The Nike Sportswear Cinema Tuesday Series started 2009 in a big way this Tuesday by showing a special advanced screening of the much anticipated film NOTORIOUS directed by George Tillman Jr., about the legendary hip hop artist Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace. This screening was definitely the place to be on Tuesday night ( Flo Rida, Macy Gray, and even Sharon Stone were there!), and thanks to the good people at Nike Sportswear M.I.S.S. Crew was in attendance :)

Presented in conjunction with URB Magazine, the evening started off with DJ sets by MC Lyte and DJ Smiles Davis playing hip hop classics setting the mood and getting the crowd ready to watch the film. NOTORIOUS tells the story about the remarkable rise and all-too-short career of “The Notorious B.I.G.” Jamal Woolard’s portrayal of Biggie shows his journey from Brooklyn street hustler to one of hip hops most talented and successful rappers.

Set against a backdrop of some of the Notorious B.I.G.’s greatest hits and including characters such as Puffy, Lil’ Kim, Faith Evans, and Tupac, this film is a definite must see! NOTORIOUS will be released in theaters this Friday January 16th.

Cinema Tuesdays will be monthly in 2009. For more info on the upcoming schedule check out Nikesportwear.com or film curators Flux.net. Remember tickets are FREE, but an RSVP is a must!

Also, don’t forget to check out the retail store at The Montalbán for all your Nike Sportswear shopping needs. The Spring 09 Nike Sportswear line debuts this weekend. And if you’re in the mood for some customized kicks and want some one-on-one help, check out the NIKEiD Studio upstairs in the theatre’s balcony.

Store hours are:
Wednesday & Thursday 11am-9pm
Friday & Saturday 11am-10pm
Sunday 12pm-8pm
