The World According to M.I.S.S. So, What’s the Deal with Arizona?

Dear Arizona, You've lost it...

Dear Arizona, You've lost it...

No seriously. What’s the deal with Arizona these days?

I think the state as a whole has lost it’s marbles. Signing into law one of the most strict and racially insensitive pieces of legislation in recent history, the state of Arizona has seen it’s fair share of international turmoil – turmoil that has been building for about a month; since Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed the bill into law. Reminiscent of the Jim Crow Era, when blacks and whites breathed, ate, slept, and played in totally separate spaces, the new immigration law would make the failure to carry the appropriate paperwork identifying yourself as a naturalized citizen of the US a bona-fide crime. Authorities have the power to then detain any and everyone that fails to have such documentation and even those who they suspect of being illegal aliens.

Mexico’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it was worried about the rights of its citizens and relations with Arizona. Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles said the authorities’ ability to demand documents was like “Nazism.”

Supported by 7 out of 10 Arizonians who believe the law will further improve the econimic status of their state (blank stare), the new immugration law is basically a call to the harassment of citizens of this country who weren’t necessarily born here. The law is taking it’s tole on the state, and the country as a whole with bitter disputes between lawmakers and Arizona inhabitants that believe it is within their lawful rights to create such a racially charged law, and with the Mexico President Felipe Calderon chiming in during his address to Congress this week.

“Immigrants only do the work that Americans will not do,” says Martin Botero, a pollster at the University of Antioquia in Medellin and has several family members in Connecticut, many of whom first arrived in the US illegally. “The law is unfair, and the federal law in general needs to be reformed.”

I wonder if it ever occurred to Arizona lawmakers, and those 7 out of 10 people, that not just Arizona, but basically all of America has been and will continue to be built on the backs of those who have been considered aliens in this country. I’m not talking about just Hispanics either, I’m talking about the Irish, the African and African American, the Polish, Dutch, and Asian inhabitants of America who have done the jobs we see beneath us, and continue to do them for little to no money just because this place is pegged the Land of Milk and Honey. I think as ordinary people we forget to imagine how monumental it can be to move your entire life to a foreign country in pursuit of a dream. These people shouldn’t be ignored, and they shouldn’t have to suffer the embarrassment and fear of being harassed by the people of this country.

Once again: What’s the deal with Arizona?

The World According to M.I.S.S.: 8: The Mormon Proposition

Equal rights, but only for some of us...

Equal rights, but only for some of us...

Proposition 8, or otherwise known as the California Marriage Protection Act, was passed during California’s state elections in November of 2008. Changing the California constitution, the act validates marriage between a man and a woman, otherwise turning over the Supreme Courts previous ruling that same sex couples had the constitutional right to wed. We know this right? Well, what we don’t know about Proposition 8 is the Morman Church’s active involvement in the passage of Prop 8 and their openness and opinions on the rights the LGBT community should have. Which apparently is none…

Mormons in California and Utah, following their prophet’s call to action, wage spiritual warfare, fueled with money and religious fervor, against LGBT citizens and their fight for equality. This exploration of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ involvement in the passage of California’s Proposition 8 reveals a secretive, decades-long campaign against lesbians’ and gays’ right to marriage.

Sundance Film Festival entry 8: The Mormon Proposition takes a look at the Mormon church’s role in developing Proposition 8, accusing the church of political meddling in what’s been deemed gay rights biggest fight. Created by former Mormon Steven Greenstreet and journalist Reed Cowan, The Mormon Proposition utilizes official church documents, recordings, and interviews with Mormon leaders, gay rights activists, and former members of the church to display how the Mormon church dug into other territory to make certain Prop 8 passed

“8” also explores the broader impact of what the filmmakers describe as the church’s historically intolerant attitude toward gays, using tales of suicide attempts by young Mormons struggling with their sexual orientations and men still grappling with memories of the shock treatments they endured in order to “cure” them of their homosexuality.

Opening in select theaters June 18, 2010, be sure to check out the trailer below.

The World According to M.I.S.S. Census Says Women are Equal to Men in Advanced Degrees

We've come so far!

We've come so far!

Equal rights for women has been an ongoing battle since before many – well all of us were born. We’ve come a long way, from being “barefoot contessas” where tending to our children, keeping a tidy home, and making sure hot meals are on this dinner table was among our top priorities. Today women not only are able to become home makers and caregivers to their families, they have exeptional opportunity to be…well what ever we want to be.

According to the US Census women are just as likely as men to have completed college and hold advance degrees. With the past year’s recession showing a massive increase in job losses with practically everyone, women have noticeably been shielded the unemployment, a fact government officials have been accrediting to women receiving not only Bachelor degrees, but also Masters’ and Ph.D’s. Although the increase in the education of women is looked upon as an advancement, we still lag behind men in one specific and important area: pay.

“It won’t be long before women dominate higher education and every degree level up to Ph.D.,” said Mark Perry, an economics professor at the University of Michigan-Flint who is a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think-tank. “They are getting the skills that will protect them from future downturns.”

Twenty nine percent of women in the U.S. have obtained at least a bachelor’s degree compared to thirty percent of men who hold the same degree, and draw even with men in holding those advanced degrees. It’s predicted that within the next year, women could in fact surpass men in holding degree’s above the bachelor level. Despite women gaining momentum on the opposite sex in terms of education, we still are fighting for equal pay. This is causing many women to look for opportunities in higher educational arenas, because a lot of us believe that advanced degrees will allow us to make a bit more money. So in one arena we’re gaining on men in education, but it’s only because we can’t make the same amount of money as men without those advanced degrees. When will this change? Maybe in the years to come, but at least we’re achieving something – even if we’re lagging in another department – it’s still a catalyst for change.

“I don’t know if we can be heartened by the educational gains, because it is persistent wage discrimination that is driving women to get a higher education,” said Terry O’Neill, president of the National Organization for Women. “As more women enter the workplace, I think they will realize the unfairness of the situation they’re experiencing and demand change.”

The World According to M.I.S.S.: Happy April Fools Day President Obama

April Fools Day is one of my favorite holidays that really shouldn’t be a holiday. It’s the day I get to give my family, friends, and coworkers heart palpitations and headaches with my antics of trickery. I’m quite good at it, if I don’t say so myself. This year the April Fools jokes spanned beyond the realm of my little world and gilded right into the world of politics, which thanks to the President’s recent victory in his reformation of the healthcare system, has been teeming with turmoil and bickering.

In honor of April Fools Day the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) created a video that pokes a bit of fun at President Obama’s accomplishments and campaign promises. Entitled “Democrats’ Rainbows and Unicorns”, the video hit the net yesterday via the NRSC website, and quickly became the web’s most watched videos. The video features sound bites from Obama’s campaign trail, and includes praise for the President for “keeping his promises” of eliminating the increasing deficit, solving global warming by replacing cars with flying unicorns that run on rainbow power, and for giving the people of America free healthcare without mandate.

What could have been a innocent and slightly amusing video, took a turn towards propaganda after the narrator proclaims that Americans shouldn’t be fooled by President Obama and the Democratic Party. We all know what April Fools Day is, and we all know what it means, but something tells me this wasn’t completely done in favor of fun. Watch the video below and let me know what you think.

The World According to M.I.S.S. Say Hello to Jihad Jane

Colleen Renee LaRose is your everyday American woman. She’s a sister, and a friend, who after converting to Islam dubbed herself Jihad Jane and along with a group of six other Irish Islam terrorists planned to murder the Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks who happened to be responsible for portraying the prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog back in 2007. LaRose has since been arrested and is being detained in Ireland on the aforementioned accusations of terrorism and for placing a $100,000 bounty on the head of Vilks.

But online, she grew increasingly devoted to a loose band of what authorities say were violent co-conspirators from around the world. They found her after she posted a YouTube video in June 2008 saying she was “desperate to do something somehow to help” ease the suffering of Muslims, the indictment said.

What is most disturbing about Jihad Jane is not necessarily her intense fascination with Islam or her attempts to murder someone who allegedly made light of the prophet Muhammad, no, what seems to be most unsettling about LaRose is her attempts at raising funds for terrorism via the internet. With the internet being the easiest, fastest, and most convenient way to grasp the attention of a wide variety of individuals in the least amount of time, LaRose took to the internet as a means to fund her inevitable trip to Ireland, and to  build contact with other Muslim martyrs even going as far as offering to marry a contact from South Asia so that he could move to Europe.

Oddly enough before dubbing herself Jihad Jane Colleen LaRose was your average woman taking care of her boyfriends father in Philadephia, PA. One who neighbors and friends said kept mostly to herself, LaRose is one of those rare examples that anyone; the neighbor down the street, the girl sitting behind you in class, or even your janitor is capable of having a completely different persona than what we see everyday.
“You could get all the thrills of participation in an illegal clandestine act in the comfort of your own bedroom,” he said. “This is someone who, I think, because of all the communicative power of the internet is able to enter into something that is larger than herself.”
