With the opening of Alice in Wonderland around the corner, it seems like everyone is gravitating towards this “twisted tea party” theme: Stella McCartney will be designing a special collection of Alice-themed jewelry, Tom Binns is creating selection of oversized furniture and pieces adorned with teacups, and even beauty brands like O.P.I will be offering four new colors, in honor of this movie debut!

With that said, art.com has over 227 different images from various artists, these include portraits/posters from the original movie to the newest featured film that is about to release.

“Two Four looks at four decades of Latina culture through collected photographs and ephemera from the archive of life long 24th Street/Mission resident Sandy Cuadra as well as through preserved archival footage of the neighborhood from the 70s and 80s collected by Veronica Majano and the Mission Film Archive”. – Clare Haggarty(curator).

“Two-Four Home Girls, Circa 1980” The Tiny Locas, “You and I” dances, and the Low-rider cars represented rites of passage and the social scene for teenage girls in the early 1980’s in the 24th Street Mission neighborhood. The exhibition features photographs by Sandy Cuadra- a former Tiny Loca who has lived in the
Mission for over 30 years- memories of dancing, cars, parties in the park, and tight friendships. In addition, footage from the Mission Film Archive (thanks to filmmaker Vero Majano) further activates the world of Low-riders and the “You and I” dances. Vintage posters to promote those dances, made by Mitchell Salazar, also hang in the gallery, and complete this nostalgic look into a particular period in the Mission that speaks to the former teenager in all of us.

What I Want for the Holidays #15

What I Want for the Holidays

What I Want for the Holidays

I’ll just come out and say it, I don’t need anything. But I will take an Eggnog and Rum.  There is a ton of crap I think I need, but in my 20something years you would think that I would know the difference between needs and wants.  This is my holiday list of things that I want, but not sure if I will ever get. I’ve always been pretty lucky around the Holidays, being that my mum goes bananas this time of year and makes damn sure everyone gets what they want (: She’s so sweet! Hi Mum!! xo

1-I am so in love with this zipper clutch by Deadly Ponies. Purse and clutch? YES PLEASE! I’ve had my eye on this for quite sometime but I will continue to lust over it and just wait for it to go on sale. Call me cheap, call me whatever. I’m in school, I have bills,  I need to eat and really, I just cannot afford it right now. So I will keep my fingers crossed that it will be reduced to an affordable price that will put a smile on my heart pocket.

2-I don’t need to explain why this is so awesome. I’m a huge toy collector and this Tokidoki x Uncle Karl figure is mind blasting. However, I just can’t spend the $190 on a toy right now ):

3-Oh Tojo! I’ve been this this restaurant once as an appreciation dinner from my old bosses. I ordered the $110 omakase tasting menu and my life as never been the same. Actually, I wouldn’t need to do the 5 courses again. I just need that one smoked Sable Fish soup that I still dream about.  Wait, actually this soup is only available with the $110 omakase menu ): There are only a few places that I have left absolutely stunned by how amazing it was and Tojo’s did just that. I’m not going to say that I’m a foodie, because I hate that word, but I will say this: I live to eat. I love experience of fine dining or not fine dining, I just love food. And I especially love how Tojo’s special Sable fish soup makes me feel. My stomach just growled ): If you are ever in Vancouver British Columbia, go to Tojo’s!

4-I would love a print of Takashi Murakami. I have plushies, but no prints to hang up on the wall. One day I will be able to afford one for myself, but until then, Santa baby just slip a Murakami print under the tree for me!

5-I wasn’t feeling these then, (and I’m not really now either I don’t even rock Nikes anymore) but I need these in my life. I look everyday for a Men’s 6 or a Women’s 8. I cannot get over the fact that I can’t have these. Wow, that sounded bratty right?! But these Nike Terminator Supreme Hi’s must be mine.

Fashion Meets Music: Pharrell Williams

The Gentleman wore pink

The Gentleman wore pink

The first word that comes to mind when I think of Pharrell Williams is “fresh,” the type of man that will rock a Hermes crocodile skin hoodie with Nike Lunar Everyday runners pushin’ a Ferrari Enzo. His look always seems  to be effortlessly pulled together mixing designer with street. While I am not a fan of celebrity fashion lines, Pharrell’s Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream lines which he co-designs have some nice gear for the fellas! It seems to do especially well in Japan alongside brands like Visvim and Neighborhood.

Pharrell is a design junkie for sure. The beauty of it all is the his zeitgeist point of view churns out pure quality. He produces music along with Chad Hugo as The Neptunes. They’ve produced hits for Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dog, and Justin Timberlake among many others. One of my all time favorites is Jay-z’s “Excuse Me Miss,” gotta love it. The latest track The Neptunes have produced is Jennifer Lopez’s “Fresh Out The Oven.” Did you know that he wrote the classic Wreckx-n-Effect jam “Rump Shaker” ah, a leader of the times. Luckily for us it doesn’t stop there and that since his style and taste level are so on point. Add jewelry designer, furniture designer, and entrepreneur to his credit. He co-owns Brooklyn Machine Works, keep reading for some info on the latest project he is working on.

Besides his endless list of projects, he always comes correct whether he is walking a red carpet or heading off to the studio. He carries his laptop and things in a PURPLE croc Hermes tote and collects vintage Haut a Courroies bags, just don’t confuse these with manpurses, on Pharrell these are travel bags, my darlings. I love that Pharrell could be wearing a tee shirt, jeans, sneakers and a hat and still be the freshest dude on the block, however, I will take a dapper P anyday. Either way both come natural and never look overdone or like he’s trying, (a couple of people come to mind)

“Style is about who you are, where you’re going, what’s comfortable,” he says with a shrug, stepping out onto the wraparound balcony where the photographer waits. “It’s your attitude that makes it hot.” (via Paper Magazine)

Style is all about attitude

Style is all about attitude

If you’ve never been to an N*E*R*D show I suggest catching them the next time they are in your town. Their live show is a blend of rock (usually two sets of drums with guitars), electronic (Chad on the keys), and hip hop funk and the energy they deliver can be felt in the air. I’ve been to shows where the music is great, but the stage show lacks appeal and it gets boring. This group is easy on the eyes and definitely exciting to see. N*E*R*D’s next album, Instant Gratification, is slated to be released in the Spring of 2010. Should be interesting since they recently added singer, Rhea, to the mix.

Pharrell is a producer, so it’s only natural that he is a collaborative artist. Beyond the music industry he has worked with artist, Takashi Murakami, French design duo Domeau & Pérès, luxury brand Louis Vuitton, and most recently with Brooklyn Machine Works on a new fixie bike which uses Water Buffalo skin (in yellow!) throughout the design, so far only one is on display in Paris but this project looks pretty rad, apparel to be released as well. Louis, Louis: Murakami Wraps The NY Louis Vuitton Flagship For The Holidays

Louis Vuitton usually wraps it’s Maisons across the globe when they are undergoing renovation, but this holiday season, the NYC flagship will be wrapped in Takashi Murakami’s Monogram Multicolore. The vinyl covering, will only be on the NY flagship and it’s signed by the artist himself. I can’t wait to get to NY for the holidays so I can see this for myself! I want a little piece to wallpaper my walls- ha! That’s not all the NY store on 57th Street has in store. A few months back they installed a “Bag Bar” complete with plush stools so you can sit as you peruse through jewelry and bags. Leave it to Louis Vuitton to elevate the shopping experience to new heights of luxury. Check out the “Bag Bar” after the jump.

“Transformer” – Prada’s Cultural Events Exhibition Space

Luxury brands have had a long-standing relationship with the arts whether its Louis Vuitton debuting goods designed by Takashi Murakami in a museum (LA & Brooklyn), or Chanel’s Mobile Art Pavillion designed by Zaha Hadid. Prada has always shown an interest in architecture – their boutiques are designed by leading architects and are often works of art themselves. Prada is taking its interest one step further by commissioning Rem Koolhaas to design a tetrahedron structure that will host cultural, art and fashion events that Prada organizes.

The Transformer can be rotated on each side depending on the event, with four different facades and floor plate configurations, so that floors become walls and walls become the ceiling. Each of the four programs will function on unique steel-framed shapes: a hexagon, a cross, a rectangle and a circle.

The transformer will debut in Seoul, Korea next year and will host events from March to July 2009. This is quite an amazing project and I hope that the Transformer makes it’s way stateside.

Monogramoflage Collection: Murakami x Louis Vuitton

I mean really, come on guys! Stop messing with us!!! My heart, let alone my pocket book just can’t take too much more. Just another thing to add to the “wish list”. This “Monogramoflage” collection is yet another brilliant collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami. It was revealed earlier last month that this pattern was part of the Murakami exhibit currently at the Brooklyn Museum. But when I saw the actual bag in the most recent Harper’s Bazaar I nearly lost my mind. This is a perfect example of the “trickle up” effect. Now, by “trickle up”, I mean the streets influencing the higher end market. Every fashionista, sneaker crazed, streetwearing, bamboo rocking lady (and I bet there is a guy or two out there that’s thinking about it) is gonna want to either wrap this scarf around his/her neck or slang this tote over their shoulder. This was made with “us” in mind, the art conscious, trend savvy, taste maker…or perhaps for those with money to feel more “street” or urban. Either way you look at it, Canal Street is gonna have a hay day with this one!
