Style.com’s Virtual Front Row

For those of us mere mortals not lucky enough to receive an invite to fashion week (oh yeah, mine got lost in the mail too!) Style.com brings us Virtual Front Row.  Fashion industry personalities have recorded diary entries and bits of gossip from fashion week that play while a South Park-esque version of them bobs in front of you on your screen.  Kinda creepy, but fun all the same. Click here to listen to entries from Erin Wasson, Michael Kors, Vera Wang and more.

Burdastyle: Open Source Sewing Fun!

Burdastyle is probably one of the hippest online destinations for do-it-yourself style out there. Think of it as a virtual sewing circle, an open-source hub of ideas, expertise, and stylish and hip patterns you can download and sew at home.

The site does charge a small fee for some patterns—usually a few dollars—but they also offer plenty of lovely patterns for free!

There is also a BurdaStyle community where members can discuss sewing tricks and fixes. Also available for members: “Sewpedia” resource guide for terms and tips in user-generated photo and video How Tos. Users can explore others’ creations in the Gallery and you can even barter or sell what you make!

More fun looks via Burdastyle, after the jump!

We Got The Beat: The NOISEttes

My latest iTunes download was the 2007 album What’s the Time, Mr. Wolf? by The NOISEttes. Fronted by the astonishingly fashionable Shingai Shoniwa, The NOISEttes have a sound that’s an amalgamation of punk, soul, blues, and good ol’ rock and roll. Their music is dark, heavy, sexy sexy sexy and I just had to have it!

Shingai Shoniwa sings like a songbird raised by Billie Holiday and Siouxsie Sioux and godmothered by Beth Gibbons of Portishead. She patrols the stage like a Runaway (Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Cherie Currie, Sandy West) and the way she rips on the bass would make Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart proud.

They’ve been likened to the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s and the White Stripes but the dynamic collaboration of guitarist Dan Smith and drummer Jamie Morrison, who complete the trio, has the Noisettes in a category that teeters on Afro-Punk and indie-rock at it’s finest.

But let’s get back to Shingai’s eye for fashion. This girl is hot. The fiery frontwoman flaunts feather-and-war-paint stage attire mixed with elements of the London punk scene, all while pulling from her Zimbabwan roots, where tribes express themselves in the way they dress.

Music, outfits, and big earrings—all the makings of a fashion icon.

Check the shots of Shingai’s style below:

More on Shingai Shoniwa, The Noisettes and the Afro-Punk movement after the jump!

Trend watch: Gray nail polish

gunmetal.jpgIt seems as though there are quite a few people still mourning the death of Chanel’s black satin nail polish, which is evident in the fact that a new neutral tone seems to be just as in demand this summer as LA Sunrise:

Gray nail polish.

It’s definitely not the vibrant orange color women have been leaving their manicurists wearing or as London Times writer Lisa Armstrong says, “It looks downright unhealthy, like a body gently rotting from within.”

True.

And yet, that never kept any of us away from an even more morbid black nail stain. My favorite type comes courtesy of Lippmmans — whom created the gunmetal polish with 80s icon Pat Benatar.

Coming Attraction: British Knights

british-knights.jpg

After a temporary hiatus from the scene, it seems as though once popular sneaker brand, British Knights, is seamlessly making its way back into fashion.

They currently have an online store where their storied sneakers can be purchased as well as t-shirts that bare the company’s logo.

In addition to the throwback merch, the site boasts a gallery full of vintage ads and ask readers to send in stories of their fondest memories associated with the shoe.

As if  you could forget, the first M.I.S.S. downloadable calendar featured a lace pair of BK hi-tops. If only the new kicks, looked as cool. *sigh.

Up, up, and away!

pow-necklace.jpg

Just when we thought the love affair between fashion and super heroes was winding down, Colette uploads this piece of action-packed jewelry to their ever so popular online boutique.

Designed by Japan’s version of Jacob the Jeweler, Antonio Murphy & Astro, the Pow! necklace comes in black, white, and various bold neon colors with silver or gold chains.

Unlike your typical Batman tees and Wonder Woman catsuits, this is going to cost more than twenty bucks - $180 more to be exact. But when you’re rocking something as frighteningly amazing as this necklace , how can you take a pass.

When Bad Sneakers Happen To Good People

In case you’ve been living under rock, allow me to make one thing clear:We lurrrvvve sneakers here at M.I.S.S. Crew.

From metallic Nike hi-tops to vintage LA Gears, we’ve always had a weakness for finely crafted and well-designed kicks. And we know we’re not the only people with this problem.

So, we can understand why Vanessa Hudgens would be interested in crafting a song that pays homage to her favorite pair of sneakers. But - oh, my! - what was she thinking when she laid down her tragic vocals on her new single, Sneakernight.

Not only can she not sing (and that’s after all of the fancy production, yall), but the sneakers Vanessa and her video co-horts are wearing are pretty, uh, well, bad.

Kidrobot Spring handbags

kidrobot-spring-line.jpg

Unless you have children or work in a field where you have to tend to their needs on a daily basis, say, a daycare, then it’s pretty hard to justify your collection of limited-edition dolls Bearbricks to any otherwise rational adult.

Luckily, though, no one needs an excuse to buy a cool handbag paying homage to some of their favorite plastic figurines.

This summer, Kidrobot is launching a line of new bags that are bound to make you want to be a kid all over again — except without the task of doing homework or listening to your parents complain, of course.

Ranging in prices  from $38 to $148 for canvas and $78 to $328 for reflective nylon, the brightly colored bags come equipped with three equally playful details: Munny zipper pull, a Yummy Donut key chain, and a mini Smorkin’ Labbit.

While the over-sized  weekend totes are a bit much for our liking, the backpack and messenger have our names written all over them. If you feel the same way, you can pick up your Kidrobot bag at Kidrobot stores, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale’s beginning June 25th.

Happy shopping.

J Brand goes green

While Seven Jeans occupy the bodies of soccer moms now, J Brand has the Alice & Olivia-loving set in their tangled web of dark wash skinny jeans and wide-leg trousers.

And, like any cooler younger sister competing in this denim market, J Brand has reworked some of its more popular styles to keep their customers buying those $200 jeans in our slagging economy.

The Lovestory and Monroe can now be found at Shopbop made out of 98%  organic cotton. The washes look vintage and worn-in. Just what I like. And a purchase of a pair of J Brand Green Label jeans comes with a free canvas tote. Cool, right?

Meanwhile, Shopbop is offering an additional 25% off of items already marked down to 70% off. It’s their version of the stimulus package.

Rami Kashou: Coming to HSN

With all of the drama surrounding Project Runway these days, it’s easy to forget that the addictive hour of reality television has actually produced some quality talent.

Case in point: Rami Kashou.

The Project Runway finalist Rami Kashou has designed an “exclusive look for the upcoming one year anniversary show of Scoop Style on HSN, which will take place on May 15th at 1:30am-2:00am and 10pm-12am.

According to the press release, the ensemble will highlight the “designer’s draping expertise with a rayon-blend fabric, available in black, rich peacock, lime pop and vintage sea foam for $280.00.

Basically, the sexy little number will look a lot like that dreamy off-the-shoulder goddess dress he made for the first challenge on Project Runway. For those who didn’t catch the episode, think Lanvin spring ‘08 on a budget.

Last year, Uli Herzner — PR season 3 finalist — participated in this threesome and her pieces were a total success, so I imagine Rami will suffer a similar fate considering his designs are more Shopbop friendly.

My grandmother will be watching.
