Nikita and Kimi Records Team Up to Bring You the Best of Both Worlds

Nikita and Kimi Records team up.

Nikita and Kimi Records team up.

Classic combinations have been around for ages. Peanut butter and jelly. Romeo and Juliet. Fashion and music. The fashion and music industries have always complemented each other, as superstars in both sectors have always been willing to lend their talents to each other. Kanye West’s work with Louis Vuitton is one recent example.

Here’s a lesser-known fashion and music combo, but one you should definitely know about: Iceland-based streetwear label Nikita and Kimi Records (also Icelandic) have teamed up for a unique way to display Nikita’s clothing. Kimi Records artists Borko, Hjaltalín, Retro Stefson and Morðingjanir will lend tunes to the clothing label for videos showcasing Nikita’s Spring/Summer 2009, Fall/Winter 2009-2010, and Spring/Summer 2010 collections. To see the videos Nikita and Kimi Records have created so far (and to sample some ear candy), check out the Videos section at Nikita’s site.

By now you’re probably wondering exactly what kind of apparel you can expect from Nikita. In addition to beach-friendly babydoll and T-shirt dresses (not exactly what you were expecting from an Iceland-based brand, huh?), Nikita’s offerings also include swimsuits, board shorts, hoodies, and even cardigans, each with a funky Nikita twist. Also included under the Nikita name are outerwear (pants and jackets) and accessories, such as hats, scarves, and belts. With the brand’s paint splatter tees and graphic prints, you could easily mistake Nikita’s origins for the streets of Southern California.

Nikita’s site also includes a special section dubbed Nikita Selekzion, a collection of tops and bottoms more appropriate for club-hopping than wading on the beach. Amongst the Selekzion you’ll find printed skirts and leggings, as well as bubble-hem dresses and form-fitting tees. We mean it when we say Nikita has something for everyone!

To keep up with Nikita and see what kinda tunes the label’s got coming up, make sure you bookmark Nikita’s official Web site, where you can see all of Nikita’s pieces and peep the label’s blog. To see a list of online retailers offering Nikita pieces, you can see a full list of online dealers at Nikita’s Web site. You can also view Nikita’s dealers and distributors by country.

For those of you tweeting, start following the Nikita Twitter! If you’re wondering about the songs sampled in Nikita’s videos, check out the Kimi Records Web site. And one last site to note: all music used in the vids will be available through Gogoyoko, so make sure you add it to your Favorites folder!

Married to the Mob Spring Collection, Part Deux

If Married to the Mob’s first spring ‘09 collection wasn’t enough to satiate your palate, luckily the brand has more coming your way. You already saw Kid Sister rocking her MTTM gear, now get yourself ready for the second wave. This spring MOB is venturing into new territory, in addition to some twists on old favorites.

We all know that MTTM is famous for creating edgy, in-your-face tees and curve-hugging denim, but this spring MTTM is changing it up a bit with the first MOB dress! That’s right, for all you ladies who’ve saturated your closet with Leah McSweeney’s famous tees, now you’ll have the chance to glam yourself up a bit more with a Most Official Dress - the “Flight Dress.”  The universally flattering silhouette features a bubble hem and cinched waist, perfect for accentuating that hourglass figure while at the same time sporting a stitched “MOB” detail.

For a look that’s a little bit less dressy (but still just as chic) is the “Say It Loud” T-shirt dress - ideal for pairing with your MOB graffiti leggings! (Or any leggings for that matter.)  With a bit more coverage than your usual tee, you’re sure to catch the eyes of passersby with this garment that reads, “MOB rules the world & everything in it since ‘82!”

Also new for the warmer weather is the distressed wash on MTTM’s 24th Street jean.  Once again, flattering and curve-hugging . . . And easily worn with a favorite pair of sneakers or your newest, hottest stilettos.  But you didn’t think that MTTM would release a collection without including any of its infamous tees, would you? The brand stays true to its roots this spring with a fresh batch of colorful tops (lilac, anyone?), as well as a less demure, “Sex Sells” tee.

Once again, Leah and the ladies of MTTM know exactly what us ladies want and need in our wardrobe! The array of pieces is sure to please, and with the addition of MOB dresses it’s obvious that Leah McSweeney’s got a lot more up her sleeve that we can’t wait to see.

You can purchase all of the pieces in the collection online here. Read the full story to see more images!

Streetwear: The Insider’s Guide

vogel_street_book.jpg

This probably isn’t anything new for my readers from across the pond because it was released a couple of months ago in the UK, but Steven Vogel’s Streetwear: The Insider’s Guide has finally made its way stateside.Marked as the first definitive guide of its kind, the book discusses, “the clothes inspired by urban youth culture; written and produced by those involved in this fast-growing fashion force, Streetwear offers an insider’s view of this subculture phenomenon-cum-industry. Hundreds of sketches, graphics, and photos present an encyclopedic overview of street style and fashion, while candid interviews bring together more than forty leading streetwear designers from around the world. Streetwear focuses not only on designers, but also on the magazines, Web publishers, and creative agencies that help drive these trends today. With its unique access and detailed reference section, Streetwear is the new bible for urban culture enthusiasts, documenting the appeal of a style that has exploded across the globe. Basically, it makes for a great coffee table book and gift for that certain sneaker conscious love in your life. If you’re interested, the book goes on sale September 19th at most major book retailers.
