Women Making History: Annie of Cubannie Links

Cubannie Links is an independently owned, home based jewelry collection, best known for unconventional jewelry and light weight “big earrings”…but you already knew that! Who can believe that this ubiquitous brand only just launched in 2007?! What began as a hobby has now evolved into individual high craftsmanship jewelry pieces and can be seen on celebrities and fashionistas alike. Oh and this has to be said: who can deny that this brand has one of the best names in the game!? A hint of eras past is found in the CL collection, but new forward thinking and mindfulness of what “THAT GIRL” desires is key to CL’s success. Founder & Designer Annie Basulto has been getting amazing notoriety as being one of the new fresh designers on the scene and today we honor her as a woman making history.

Above: Some CL pieces are featured on artist Cuci Amador, of Afrobeta, in a Calle 13 (a huge group in the latin community) video “Electro Movimiento”. Looks fun, right?! Click here, or the image above, for that video.

We have A LOT MORE from Annie and Cubannie Links below the cut, including a handwritten interview, a look at her workspace and a closer look at the CL collection!

“He’s Just Not That Into You” Trailer

I’ve been seeing the trailer for He’s Just Not That Into You a lot lately and it looks like a really cute film. Releasing this Friday, it’s got a great ensemble cast featuring Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Connelly, Bradley Cooper, Drew Barrymore, Ginnifer Goodwin, Scarlett Johansson and Justin Long. The romantic comedy is based on a book by the same name and the screen is written by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tucillo, who wrote for the Sex and the City series. I must say, I thank my lucky stars every day for my husband, but I was a single girl once and I can still appreciate the humor and heartache in how men and women misinterpret each others calls, texts, emails and every word. He’s Just Not Into You comes out just in time for Valentines’ Day, and seems like a great movie to see with the girls. View the preview below.

“Ever Thine, Ever Mine, Ever Ours”: Love Letters of Great Men by John C. Kirkland

If you saw the Sex And The City Movie, you probably are familiar with the infamous “Love Letters of Great Men” book.  If you are like me, you looked for it after the movie only to find out that it was a fictional book.  No longer!  John C. Kirkland sensed that women everywhere would be searching for a compilation of love letters written through the years by some of the greatest men in history and he’s succeeded in putting together an impressive first volume.

I read his first volume, Love Letters of Great Men, on my flight back from New York where I covered fashion week with my friends (yes, very SATC of us).  I finished it in about 2 hours - it was a quick read and is the kind of book that you’ll go back read passages over and over gain.  The book is set up chronologically and takes you through time and features men from history including Ovid, Voltaire, Napoleon, Beethoven, Edgar Allen Poe, Kafka and Woodrow Wilson.  After each man’s love letters, a short bio of the man follows.  I started reading it the way it was laid out but soon started to read the bios first, and then the love letters.  I felt that I had a better understanding of the person if I knew exactly who he was before reading some of his most personal, intimate thoughts.

Reading these love letters, you realize that you are reading about that which makes these strong, capable men most vulnerable - the women they love.  Love Letters of Great Men, takes you to a time before phones, email and text messages.  A time when you would be separated from your love for months, if not years, on end and when pen and paper were the only thing connecting you to him/her.  It was interesting to see how passionate some of these men were.  It wasn’t surprising that Naploeon, a legendary warrior and known for his fiery temper, was equally passionate when it came to Josephine.  And, it was interesting to read, that George Washington, the “father of our country,” reluctantly took his position as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, as he told Martha that he would rather stay at home with her.  One of the saddest letters (and definitely a tear jerker) was written by Major Sullivan Ballou to his wife on the eve of battle - the last correspondence he would send to her:

But, O Sarah!  If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the garish day and in the darkest night - amidst your happpiest scenes and gloomiest hours - always, always; and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath; or the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by.

Love Letters of Great Men, Volume 1, is a wonderful selection of letters written by great men, to the equally great women that loved them.  My only peeve was that Henry VIII was included, and his letter to Anne Boleyn seemed a bit hypocritcal because ultimately he had her beheaded after falsely accusing her of adultery.   Other than that I loved the book.  I’m excited because Kirkland ends by alluding to an upcoming Volume 2 that might include the likes of Benjamin Franklin, Roosevelt, Kipling, Shakespeare, Wilde and Freud.

You can purchase Love Letters of Great Men online here.  Some of the stories end tragically, but this realization truly illustrated to me that “’Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.?  -Lord Tennyson

Rumors, Rumors: Vivienne Westwood Enjoyed “SATC”

vivienne westwood sex and the city

A few weeks ago the internet was goin’ nuts with rumors that Dame Vivienne Westwood, the designer of the infamous SATC wedding gown, hated the movie and found the fashion uninspiring. I was a bit surprised when I read it, especially because the designer’s own gown plays such a big role in the movie. Was she saying that her own design was also not memorable? Well, folks, just because they say it, doesn’t make it true! British Vogue got the inside scoop from the designer herself about her thoughts on the film . . .

I stayed throughout the film, and was overjoyed to see Sarah Jessica in her beautiful wedding dress; furthermore, I have been delighted to notice recently how well young girls are dressing, and that they have clearly been inspired by the film.

Don’t believe everything you read . . . unless you read it here :)

Patricia Field is My #1.

Patricia Field

Patricia Field is one of “The 50 Most Powerful Woman in NYC? according to the New York Post (jun.3). She landed at #24 but in my heart she is always #1, so much so that when I use to work for Barneys New York many celebrities would come and go. However, it was not until I was in the presence of Patricia Field that I had to do the impossible, get her autograph (Hey! it was all I could do at the time). We as employees were not allowed to do such a thing, because we could loose our jobs. What’s a girl to do? I am from the Bronx N.Y. and we invented the word Sneaky, enough said! Check out this Current T.V. interview on Pat. Field.

P.S. If I ever go back into retail as a job the Patricia Field Boutique is going to be my 1st choice. In the mean time I am accepting gift cards. Hint Hint!

Sex & The City NYC Premier

sex and the city ny premier
Last night marked the NY premier of Sex and the City, the much anticipated movie that will most definitely showcase beautiful clothes and spur a multitude of trends. The 4 leading ladies dazzled in varying shades of neutral metallics from silver, gold, ivory and gun metal black. Ms. Field didn’t shy away from color in a purple metallic ensemble paired with black, and of course her fire engine red locks. I think it’s funny that they all opted for super-shine. I wonder if the actresses knew the iconic stylist would be opting for disco metallic?

I love that they had a pink carpet for their premier (as did M.I.S.S. Crew for our 2nd Birthday Party) - what can we say, great minds think alike. I am super excited about seeing this movie but I have to express my distaste and frustration that Fergie is the artist behind the song for the movie. I don’t think that she has the most talent in the singing department and her taste level is questionable. That said, I won’t let the song ruin it for me and I’ll just plug my ears and look at all the pretty clothes.

patricia_field_payless.jpg

Patricia Field , famed for her styling on the hit TV show “Sex and the City “ is once again noticed for her works. She was nominated for her costume designs for “The Devil Wears Prada ? (one of my fave movies). If you luv’d the shoes that she was wearing on the red carpet for the 79th Annual Academy Awards , don’t be envy because Payless has joined hands with this brilliant stylist and for the holiday season of this year, they will release the Red Carpet Collection by Patricia Field exclusively at Payless stores. The Payless shoes are a uniquely designed platform heel with an ankle strap featuring an edgy mix of metallic and colored snake skin. The collection is intended to include handbags as well, with pricing expected at $45 and under. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens next, but I can predict this is going to be “crazy? in a good way, I luv Patricia Field!

I have to say I never saw this coming…

Payless and Field have had a close working relationship for about a year and onehalf; Field has been styling Payless TV and print ads, as well as the seasonal lifestyle signage featured in the stores. Upon hearing the news of Field’s Oscar® nomination, Payless approached her with the design project and the opportunity.
