Women Making History: Isabelle aka Narcissister

Many of you have the art of Isabelle Lumpkin in your homes and you may or may not know it…

In January, the London-based gallery Art Vinyl, revealed the results of their competition to find the best vinyl/CD sleeve of 2008. Among the results was Santogold by Santogold (now Santigold). The designer of that album art is the woman we honor today—Isabelle Lumpkin aka Narcissister.

We’ve honored many creative ladies since the start of our Women Making History series but it’s safe to say that Narcissister is unlike any lady we’ve featured before.

Before Isabelle called herself Narcissister, she was a professional modern dancer. Her most formative training took place at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. Among her professional highlights was performing with the Ailey company in Memoria, one of Ailey’s seminal pieces, touring Europe as a dancer in a German rock-opera, and performing in industrial work for Mercedes Benz.

In addition to her performance work, Narcissister has worked in many other creative media including contemporary quilting, collage, sculpture, printmaking, and her most recent medium of photography. She has participated in multiple studio residencies and her work has been included in group shows and media publications. To earn her living, Narcissister works as a commercial artist, designing window displays and working as a stylist and art director.

This lady’s creativity is explosive and we have a lot more of it to share with you after the jump, including more from the Santigold project, a survey, Q&A and shots from her performance projects..one being a NSFW image...Jump!

Women Making History: Kelly B. of Princess of the Posse

For today’s Women Making History feature, we honor Kelly B. of Princess of the Posse.

Since the launch of their first collection out of NYC in the Spring of 2008, Princess of the Posse has quickly gained worldwide recognition. This fashion forward women’s brand offers limited runs each season, creating designs that swing freely between art, fashion, glamour and street. This Spring season Princess of the Posse returns to the basics, presenting a collection showcasing the simplicity and beauty of black & white.

Here’s what Kelly has to say about the collection:

This collection was inspired by the minimalism of Berlin street fashion & the allure of French royalty. Always reflecting upon their NY state of mind, P.O.P. honors some of their favorite musicians (Santogold and Ghostface Killah) by citing lyrics that inspire the designers. Princess of the Posse continues to bring you the best in quality fabrics and silhouettes with all the printing and cut goods made in NYC.

We have a lot more with Kelly B., after the jump, including a handwritten survey and M.I.S.S. Crew Q&A!

Vote For Santogold!

The best cd I got this year was hands down Santogold’s self-titled album. I listened to it on repeat all day, all night.  It was one of the few albums I could listen to all the way through.  I don’t have a favorite song because I love them all equally.   I finally had a chance to do something about how much I love Santogold.   Urb Magazine is conducting its annual poll and Santogold is nominated in 5 categories: Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Indie Artist of the Year, Best New Artist and Best Video.  Go vote for Santogold! I know I did!

If you want more Santogold check out the new track by Jay-Z feat. Santogold song “Brooklyn (Go Hard)” on her myspace and if you need a referesher on why L.E.S. Artiste should win for best video watch below.

“Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere” - Mae West

Hellz Bellz introduces their holiday collection, “Born Bad,” inspired by the infamous Vaudeville actress, and sexual liberator, Mae West. The Holiday collection represents for the “Born Bad” femme fatale: With West’s racy quotes which sprang, tough-dame style from the side of her mouth, she’s been firmly stamped as the personification of Hellz through her story of survival, persistence, independence and unshakable self-esteem. In her life which ended in 1980, at the age of 87, she became both an icon and pioneer for both men and women everywhere.

The collection comes full force with the “Born Bad” style showcasing key items such as the No Frontin’ stadium jacket, Night Stalker doleman top, Grotesk skinny jeans and much more.  The collection looks amazing and there are so many pieces I love.  First, the line is built on a strong foundation - you can’t go wrong with strong colors like red, black, turquoise and grey.  The Grotesk skinny jean looks like the perfect jean - the kind that you end of living in.  And, between the really dark indigo and inky black - you wouldn’t need any other pair.  The jackets look so warm, comfy and Hellz reinvents her stadium jackets with new fabrications and details for the ladies.  The graphic tees are great too - I’m especially loving the skull filled in with strong, female icons.  Other stand-outs include the bow top, sweatpants (!!) and tote bags.

I love that Lanie was inspired by a strong, ground-breaking woman like Mae West and the entire look book does a beautiful job of illustrating the theme.  I love the model’s bright red hair, the raw locations and the repetitive cut-out effect they did.  The look book was shot by The Social Trust.  Check out the look book, set to a Santogold remix Switch and Graeme, here.

“Born Bad” is available in stores now. You can find a store nearest you, here.

M.I.S.S. Vegas Review: Bijules NYC at L’Art Bizarre

I’ve always been a fan of Bijules NYC since her iconic 1-finger bar ring came onto the scene. I’ve had the pleasure of working with her and following her collections through the years and she always manages to add an element of surprise. Her newest collection is no different, in fact, it gets the gold star for the most amazing thing I saw in Vegas (and we saw a lot!).

For Fall ‘09, Bijules introduces “Arsenic and Old Lace,” a jewelry/lingerie capsule collection that embodies the quintessential Bijules femme in black lace and delicate golden chains. The collection is sold as a set consisting of a bra, high-waisted panties, garter and garter belt. Many of the pieces can be worn several ways and have a “Light Fancy” chain link - a link that Bijules resurrected from men’s pocket watches from the 1920s. The bra can be worn as a halter with gold linked underwire or as a bandeau with gold linked straps over the shoulders. The high waisted panties feature golden linked “suspenders” (so insane!) and the garter belt has asymmetrial hook and eyes and can be worn at the hip or the waist. The garter, with dangling gold chains, can be worn on the thigh, on the neck as a choker or as a headband. Bijules wants you to get the most out of the set so she encourages you to “overwear your underwear and express what is intimate as something formal and defiant.”

The collection has a very 1920s gangster moll look that I love and is the sexiest set of lingerie I’ve seen. “Arsenic and Old Lace” is limited to a series of 15 and retails for over $1000. Each set is numbered, comes with a certificate of authenticity, and comes in a box wrapped with a pair of thigh-high stockings. For those of us who don’t have that kind of lingerie budget, Bijules has masquerade mask that can be worn as a mask or a headband. Check out the rest of the “Arsenic and Old Lace” collection after the jump, as well as, other goodies like the custom snake nail ring that Santogold wore on MTV.

*L’Art Bizarre was a gifting suite put together by Gravis, HVW8 and Bijules NYC
