Many of you have the art of Isabelle Lumpkin in your homes and you may or may not know it…

In January, the London-based gallery Art Vinyl, revealed the results of their competition to find the best vinyl/CD sleeve of 2008. Among the results was Santogold by Santogold (now Santigold). The designer of that album art is the woman we honor today—Isabelle Lumpkin aka Narcissister.

We’ve honored many creative ladies since the start of our Women Making History series but it’s safe to say that Narcissister is unlike any lady we’ve featured before.

Before Isabelle called herself Narcissister, she was a professional modern dancer. Her most formative training took place at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. Among her professional highlights was performing with the Ailey company in Memoria, one of Ailey’s seminal pieces, touring Europe as a dancer in a German rock-opera, and performing in industrial work for Mercedes Benz.

In addition to her performance work, Narcissister has worked in many other creative media including contemporary quilting, collage, sculpture, printmaking, and her most recent medium of photography. She has participated in multiple studio residencies and her work has been included in group shows and media publications. To earn her living, Narcissister works as a commercial artist, designing window displays and working as a stylist and art director.

Santi White (a.k.a. Santogold) has had such a busy year, she’s been reduced to talking about it in lacrosse analogies. Check her out on XLR8R TV where she addresses being called an MC when she isn’t one, embarrassing stage moments with GZA, and the freedom that her latest work has given her.

When I first heard Santogold aka Santi White last year, her voice was definitely one I wanted to hear more of but her production was just as impressive. When I discovered that she had produced one of my favorite albums How I Do by Res, my respect for her sky-rocketed!

The pairing of these two ladies created one of the most amazing albums I’ve heard to date. How I Do is one of those albums that I can listen to from start to finish without skipping a track.

Rather than delve into the similarities of the two and the why-is-Res-so-slept-on cry, I’m reintroducing you to the amazing Res by sharing the video to Golden Boys.

Besides being a strong track, the colors and cinematography in this video are candy! Res is fierce in looks, vocals, and swagger! Check it:

A few weeks back we reported that Santogold was releasing her debut self-titled CD. I finally got a chance to grab a copy this weekend and I’ve been listening to it non-stop since I got it. I love it when I get a CD that I can listen to all the way without skipping over less-likeable tracks and there is definitely NO skipping here. Each track is amazing and can stand on it’s own. When heard together, it’s genius. Santogold is a bit of an enigma so please don’t try pigeon-holing this lovely songstress into one category because it’s impossible - she defies categorization and has a sound that is uniquely her own. Her voice is different on each track: Seductive, demure, powerful and ready to kick your ass. The music is really catchy and has hints of many different genres including punk, trip hop, rock, electronica, ska, and new wave to name a few. Santogold is a refreshing change to the generic pop princesses that do re-mixes of popular songs and shake their asses (ahem, Fergie and crew). Santi White not only sings but she writes all of her music. She is even listed in some of the credits for production, mixing, instruments and engineering. She truly is an artist and an inspiration. If you love music, you will love Santogold. She will leave you wanting more. I give her 5 hearts out of 5.
