M.I.S.S March 2009: “Let Your Dreams Run Free”

Be inspired by the women that have come before you, the ones that are laying ground in the present and those yet to come. In 1988 this woman made history with three Olympic Gold Medal wins and broke the World’s Record in the Women’s 100m Dash. Florence Griffith-Joyner aka “Flo Jo” was dubbed the “fastest woman in the world” and although World Records and gold medals support that statement, Flo Jo not only ran fast but her unique sense of style on the track could not be denied. Let’s start with those nails!!! At one point they reached lengths of 6.5″! For the 1984 Olympics in L.A., she maintained a more manageable length of 4″ and painted three red, white and blue and a fourth gold for the medal she had hoped to win in the 200 meter dash . . . she ended in 2nd and with a silver medal. On and off the track she sported wild nail style.  In 1985, after the track season ended, she styled friends’ nails and hair in the evenings to help make ends meet. Flo Jo knows nails.

Now, to my favorite part . . . the “One-Leggers.” Of course Flo Jo’s daring style didn’t start and stop at her finger tips. She brought forth true originality in her running attire. Famous for her one legged body suits, these “one-leggers,” as she called them, were always with the left leg cut off and designed by Flo Jo herself. You could find Flo Jo in head to toe lace, day glo get-ups or hooded running set-ups fit for the future. Truly a style icon and inspiration.

Florence Griffith-Joyner passed away in 1998, ten years after her epic gold medal wins and record breaking run in the 100 meters. We looked to Griffth-Joyner, a woman who undeniably made history, for a source of inspiration for M.I.S.S. March. We styled the nails after her incredible year in 1988: three gold medal wins and her World Record 100 meter time of 10.49 (which she still holds). Although Flo Jo wasn’t sponsored by the likes of Nike (not that we could find), we felt that these track shoes circa 1999 were something that screamed “Flo Jo”! Go for the gold ladies . . . today, tomorrow and always . . . in all ways. “Let Your Dreams Run Free.”

M.I.S.S. February 2009: “For The Love of Sneaker-Heels”

Love them or hate them. The sneaker heel has seen it’s comeback in recent years. We know there are those that wish they would go back and never come back but if done proper they’re kinda cute, right? We here at M.I.S.S. love kicks but we also LOVE LOVE LOVE Heels . . . and the higher the better! So the sneaker-heel is almost a match made in heaven. With that (hopefully!) “romantic” holiday right around the corner we thought we’d dress up M.I.S.S. February a bit. As sexy as ya wanna be and with a mani that will certainly get you noticed, make your guy or gal a weak link in your chain this Valentine’s Day.

Touch of Class: Sally Hansen Nail Art Pens

A while back Sally Hansen introduced nail paint pens - “pens” with thick ballpoints - an alternative to the tried and true nail polish brushes.  Now, Sally Hansen introduces Nail Art Pens featuring a smaller tip so that you can add art to your nails.  As a fan of nail art, and knowing how difficult it can be to find a salon that will execute the manicure in your mind, these are great way to put the power at your fingertips and add a touch of class to your manicure.

Mirror, Mirror: The Best of The East Bay Party 2008

So a couple of weeks ago I attended The East Bay Express ‘Best of The East Bay 2008′ Party at the Oakland Museum. It was a rare warm night in the bay, so I got to rock a tank top and sandals…yeah, that’s a big thing for Summer on this side. Seeing as how I can’t always have Mr. OHW at my side to take photos in that awesome way he does, I had to work it out for myself. Good thing I took that yoga class that one time.

M.I.S.S. Michelle’s Beauty Pick of the Week: Smooth Operator – Get Your New B.F.W.B. a.k.a. Best Friend with Benefits

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Whether you wax, shave, and/or pluck, there is always the susceptibility of falling victim to razor bumps and burn, and the most dreadful skin ailment of them all: ingrown hairs. This week’s pick, Zero Bumps by Sally Hansen, is one which practically eliminates all the aforementioned related to hair removal, and was recommended by M.I.S.S. Liz, whose enthusiasm was so great, that I had no other choice than to try this product out for myself. I used to be a fan of Tend Skin, which I considered be one of those “investment? products, since it is on the pricier side ($20/ 8oz.), but was not a fan of its vinegary smell and inconsistent results. Once I used the Zero Bumps, I was converted and Tend Skin was a fleeting memory of my beauty’s past.
