M·A·C Makeup Looks at NYFW: Rodarte, Sophie Theallet, and Threeasfour

The good people over at M·A·C were kind enough to share their facecharts from the Fall 2010 shows during New York Fashion Week. Today’s facecharts include: Rodarte, Sophie Theallet, and Threeasfour, whose shows took place on Tuesday, February 16th.

Rodarte

Rodarte

The models at Rodarte appeared “spirit like, pale skinned and ghoulish.” Said M·A·C artist, James Kaliardos. M·A·C Pro Face and Body Foundation in White was applied all over the face, for a pale, sheer finish. Eye Shadow in Quarry was lightly brushed onto the jawline to sculpt and contour. Pigment in Kitchmas was then pressed into the cheekbone to highlight. Eye Shadow in Quarry was applied to the eyelid, under the eye, and up to the brow bone using a M·A·C #213 brush. Eye Shadow in Silver Ring was layered over the Quarry and Pigment in Pink Opal was applied to the outer brow bone to highlight. Lipstick in Hipster was applied all over the lips, while Dubonnet was layered over the top onto the center of the lip.

Sophie Theallet

Thealette

M·A·C artist, Stephane Marais described the looks at Sophie Theallet as “farm girl goes to the big city- fresh faced and innocent with a chic twist. Theallet applied  M·A·C Face and Body Foundation where needed. Blushcreme in Posey and Laid Back were both applied to the apples of the cheeks. Cream Colour Base in Shell was then layered on top of the cheekbones. Lip Pencil in Stripdown was blended into the crease of the eyelid and below the eye using a M·A·C  #194 brush. Iridescent Powder in Silver Dusk and M·A·C Studio Finish Face Powder in Gold were blended together using M·A·C Mixing Medium Water Base and applied to the top and bottom lash line and blended with the Stripdown pencil. Lipstick in Amorous was pressed into the lip with a fingertip to create a stain.

Threeasfour

Threeasfour

The look at Threeasfour was a “unique take on the classic, Egyptian eye; winged out from the lower lash line for a modern twist.” M·A·C artist, Andrea Helgadottir applied M·A·C Select Moisturecover Concealer where needed. Fluidline in Blacktrack was layered along the upper and lower lash line and winged out. M·A·C Eye Kohl in Smolder was then penciled into the upper and lower lash line. Lipsticks in Fleshpot and Myth (my personal, all time favorite shades) were blended together and pressed into the lips with a fingertip.

Future of Fashion: The Virtual Runway

Future of Fashion: The Virtual Runway

Future of Fashion: The Virtual Runway

Legendary fashion photographer Nick Knight has teamed up with fashion designers Alexander Wang and Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy to live stream their upcoming New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2010 collections on his fashion forward website, SHOWstudio.com.

Alexander Wang’s show will be live Saturday February 13th at 5pm est. Rodarte will be live on Tuesday February 16th at 12pm est. Mark those calendars! These are two of the most innovative designers creating in the American market today. And  your invited to watch front row! Between Alexander Wang’s sportswear and Rodarte’s awe-inspiring knits I really can’t wait to see what comes next from these designers.

Perhaps the hottest ticket that the world is invited to is the Marc Jacobs show. That goes live Monday February 15th at 8pm est on marcjacobs.com. President of the label and PR genius, Robert Duffy, recently joined Twitter and has been offering all kinds of insider info. From asking for ideas on set design, sharing pictures of the MJ design studio, and twitpics of Marc sketching, he gives an honest behind-the-scenes look at the inner makings of the fashion world. He claims he will stop tweeting after the show on Monday. Sure hope not, he is so much fun to follow!

With bloggers sitting front row and posts going up ten minutes after a show has wrapped, fashion is moving at a much faster pace than ever before. Blogging and live streams are a useful tool for widening an audience and allowing the fashion faithful an opportunity to connect with an industry that was once exclusive to editors and clients. Noted Nick Knight:

“I see the future of fashion weeks around the world as not only a physical schedule of shows, but also as a digital calendar of fashion experiences online, which bridge the industry and consumer experience,” said Nick Knight, Director of SHOWstudio. “When the industry talks about the ‘future of fashion weeks’ this is ultimately where they will arrive.”

Do you see the Virtual Runway as a good development in fashion? Does fashion lose its exclusivity through the rapid pace of the internet?

Fashion Meets Music: Kim Gordon

Fashion Meets Music: Kim Gordon

Wildflower Soul: Kim Gordon

Wildflower Soul: Kim Gordon

Kim Gordon is undeniably the first lady of Alternative music. She plays bass and sings in the landmark band, Sonic Youth.  She encouraged her former record label, Geffen Records to sign Nirvana. She was one of the producers on Hole’s first album Pretty On The Inside. She co-directed The Breeder’s song “Cannonball” with Spike Jonze (one of my favorites), started the first women’s streetwear line X-Girl with her friend Daisy Von Furth. Today, she continues to produce influential music, art, and fashion. Kim Gordon is not only a fashion influence, she basically set the indie rock standard of “whats cool.”

Sonic Youth formed in the eighties in New York City and established themselves in the nineties as an experimental, progressive alternative rock band. Their latest album, The Eternal is a nod towards the artists that have inspired the band. According to The Guardian:

The Eternal is literally a self-portrait of the artists as consumers. With a few exceptions, each song is a byproduct of Sonic Youth’s culture-vulture virtuosity at locating choice morsels of carrion left behind by vintage vanguards and bygone extremists. This has always been an aspect of Sonic Youth, from Death Valley ‘69 (inspired by the Manson Family and the moment the 60s trip turned heavy) through the Ciccone Youth side project with its conceptual-karaoke takes on Madonna and Robert Palmer songs offset by the hipster esotericism of Two Cool Rock Chicks Listening to Neu! (this was back when knowing about Neu! wasn’t virtually middlebrow like it is today, as the records were still out of print). I know people for whom Sonic Youth functioned absolutely as a portal band, an entry point for them into an underground wonderworld of dissident noisemaking and neo-beat bohemia stretching across several decades.

X-Girl was the first streetwear company for girls it was an attempt to bring alternative style to the mainstream

X-Girl was the first streetwear company for girls it was an attempt to bring alternative style to the mainstream

X-Girl was founded by Kim and Daisy von Furth who took inspiration from thrift store shopping and lifestyle to create a line of clothing that had an indie rocker edge with what we love best, affordability. X-Girl was the first streetwear company founded by women for women. The line epitomized the alternative uniform of the early nineties; cropped tees, loose fitting pants, A-line baby-doll-type dresses, and jackets. Chloe Sevigny modeled a look book for the brand and was also featured in their music video for “Sugar Kane.” Fun fact: the video was Chloe’s first acting gig, note the super cropped cut! She is almost unrecognizable! The video portrays the band playing during Marc Jacobs now infamous 1992 Grunge collection for Perry Ellis, you know, the one that got him fired.
“…when we started out, we really just wanted to make clothes that we wanted to wear and a lot of things were, like, modified ideas about a good fitting T-shirt or pair of pants. Things that you’d find in a thrift store that you’d want to alter slightly.”
Sophia Coppola and Spike Jonze were the event organizers of X-Girl’s first fashion show which was held on the street in New York City. Hey, it’s fashion week and you want people to see your line? Put it out there! Check out the X-Girl feature below from MTV’s now defunct, House of Style series.
X-Girl had stores in NYC and L.A, but was bought out and can only be found in Japan these days. Kim’s latest fashion feat was the 2008 limited edition Mirror/Dash collection for Urban Outfitters. The collection was inspired by French singer/actress Francois Hardy, and cool stuff for mom’s to wear. Amen, sister! I worked at the Urban Outfitters in Northampton, MA (the town in which she currently resides) at the time the collection dropped, and that table had to be kept perfect. Just in case she or husband, Thurston Moore decided to drop in for some shopping.
"I just happened to start playing music for the conceptual ideas."

"I just happened to start playing music for the conceptual ideas."

Kim’s first passion has always been art. She attended the Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles, wrote for Artforum magazine, and worked in art galleries all while starting up the band. Most recently she contributed four paintings to the Rodarte Exhibition at the colette store. The acrylic paintings were done in a graffiti format and have an anti-art feel. So punk.  You can take a look at the paintings courtesy of Hypebeast.

♥♥ Readymade editors sometimes go a week without something or other. Currently, editor Caitlin Thornton is doing her best to go a week without garbage. It is hard. (that’s what she said)

The Oscars: Red Carpet 2009 Review

Marion Cotillard in Dior Haute Couture

The 81st Oscars took place tonight and one word that summed up the night – from the set design, to the fashion – is CLASSY.  It seems like the actors took heed of all the previous award show fashion critiques because most of the dresses were gorgeous and there weren’t many mishaps.  The set design of the show was gorgeous – the curtain was made from 100,000 Swarovski crystals lit from behind.  The band was brought on stage to evoke the big band era of the 1940’s and the way the Best Actor categories were announced brought a few tears to the eyes.  That said, let’s get to the fashion!  There were definitely some trends – the main one being light, neutral colors like white and beige.  One of my favorite dresses of the evening was Nicole Kidman’s but sadly I don’t have a photo.

Pale Perfection

Pale colors were very popular on the red carpet from Marisa Tomei’s white Versace gown to Sarah Jessica Parker’s “barely mint,” pastels were the color of the evening.

Tarji P. Henson in Roberto Cavalli; Evan Rachel Wood in Elie Saab

Ms. Henson’s flower petal dress is gorgeous and she carries it so well. Ms. Wood’s dress is very sophisticated, and together with her retro hair, her look hearkened back to old school Hollywood glamour.  The dangling earrings and black nail polish were a nice touch.

Anne Hathaway in Giorgio Armani Prive; Jessica Biel in Prada

Both dresses are lovely – my only comment about Ms. Biel’s dress is that no matter how great your figure, no one really needs that much extra fabric in front.

I Wear My Sunglasses At Night . . .

linda farrow rodarte
Linda Farrow for Rodarte

I’ve always been a big fan of glasses since I need to wear them to see but this Spring the eyes are taking the cake. There are an endless amount of options with retro throwbacks like Ray Bans and Lolita heart glasses playing a big part. Linda Farrow Vintage, a brand founded in the 70s by Linda Farrow, was resurrected by Linda’s son in 2003 when he found a stash of his mother’s deadstock vintage frames. The brand has an impressive account list, press and celebrity following and they are adding to their pedigree by teaming up with some of the world’s leading fashion designers to create really unique, whimsical eyewear. I don’t normally wear my sunglasses at night, but if I had any of these, I may have to start.

Gap Design Editions by Doo.Ri, Thakoon & Rodarte

gap_designs.jpg
Photography: Inez Van lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin

I honestly have to say, Gap is seriously boring…even when they tapped Roland Mouret to design a few dresses it was still not doing it for many of us. They’re good for basics and once in awhile you’ll find something in there but its not somewhere I’ll go shop often. With the competition of UNIQLO releasing collaborations with different designers every month, they don’t stand a chance. They finally stepped up and announced that there will be a limited edition collection for women called Gap Design Editions by Doo-Ri Chung , Thakoon Panichgul and Rodarte’s Kate & Laura Mulleavy .

The limited edition designs will be sold starting on April 17th in 100 larger Gap stores. This definitely is a good boost for the tired image of Gap . Don’t expect to see all different kinds of colors and designs, the project is simple, create white shirts…the products will not have the designers names on the tags but will appear will appear in ads to make it easily identifiable to customers. I still strongly disagree with this, I’d prefer the name of the designer on the tags.

The project is an offshoot of Gap ’s partnership with the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund announced last month to introduce up-and-coming designers to a broader audience by arranging for winners to design limited edition pieces for Gap .

In a statement Tuesday, Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour said, “Vogue has a long tradition of supporting young talent — in particular, our local talent — to secure a brilliant future for American fashion. And Gap ’s Design Editions project…will give a boost to the three CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winners, and bring their wonderful designs to a much bigger audience.?

I luv collaborations and white shirts are great for work…I’m liking the Thakoon design already. I can’t wait to see the full collection of whites! via wwd
