Even with the absence of bright colors, Proenza Schouler managed to debut a statement collection at New York Fashion Week. What started off as an assortment of gray knit tights and overcoats appropriate for cool autumn breezes soon progressed into a series of sexy off-the-shoulder tops and dresses, coupled with cutout frocks reminiscent of Alexander Wang’s designs.
One of the best features of the show easily was the chunky, laced-up platforms models sported . . . even with dresses! Certainly a unique and inspiring take on evening wear, and surely a way to create a memorable outfit (take note!). One texture that made a recurring appearance was tweed, but don’t be so quick to judge, this isn’t your grandfather’s sport coat we’re talking about here. Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez successfully used the fabric with a modern-day flare, using tweed for pieces such as a body-hugging turtleneck and asymmetrically-hemmed skirt.
All in all, the collection was a major success. The looks radiated sophistication and undeniable sexiness . . . perfect for the 21st century woman who has it all.

Ladies, ladies, ladies. We’re concerned. There is a growing epidemic and we need to bring it to light. There are certain things that are never in fashion. Somethings have been done once and shouldn’t happen again, like say, shoulder pads. But there are somethings that should never be done. Things that will never be a good look. I don’t care how damn cute or sexy those heels are, please know that “Shrimp ‘n Biscuits” is NOT the business. Ever. To clarify: Shrimp refers to your (hopefully) well manicured toes or shrimps curling over the edge of your heels…eeeek! Biscuits refer to your (hopefully) callus free and well moisturized heels hanging off the back of your heels. This really gets down to proper fit and size. THE SHOE IS TOO SMALL IF YOUR BUSTING OUT THE FRONT OR BACK. Or in some cases too big if your shrimping out the front, i.e: your foot is sliding too far towards the front. Bottom line: Unless you are a high fashion getting paid super model working it on the catwalk and you gotta do what you gotta do (as seen in the above picts from NY Fashion Week) the only place I want to see shrimp and biscuits is on a plate…and don’t even get me started on muffin tops.

Last week we told you that Proenza Schouler had announced that they would be releasing a footwear line. We just got a sneak peak of one of the styles and I have to say that I think it represents the designers well and is true to their aesthetic. I love the traingular heel and the contrast in materials and colors. The shoe is very unique - definitely a statement piece - the kind of shoe you build outfits around. The duo has also designed other styles including ballet slippers, loafers, lace-up sandals and heels and will be available in the upcoming resort season. The shoes will range in price from $300 to $3,000 with an average cost of $685. When asked the next logical question about when a bag range is coming out, Lazaro Hernandez stated: “It’s because we didn’t have anything to say yet. The entire market is so dense with bags and everything else, that until we found something original and specific to say, we didn’t want to say anything. We don’t do anything unless we have something to say.” All I know is that I can’t wait to see what they have to “say.”

Proenza Schouler is launching a footwear line to coordinate with its apparel collections. The young men behind the label have been fashion superstars since their debut collection and I’m really looking forward to see what they come up with for our feet. They are releasing select style for resort and a full line for Spring 2009. I hope this means we can expect to see the boys expanding into other product categories like handbags and beauty. Only time will tell . . .

These days in the fashion game it’s all about collabos. From the streetwear industry ( Mama X New ERA ) to the women’s ready-to-wear industry. In my opinion, collaborations between designers, artists, musicians, and companies are a win-win situation if done right. Remember when LeSportsac got with Gwen Stefani to do L.A.M.B .???
The current rage is all about Proenza Schouler for Target .

For all you lucky NYC natives, the entire collection will be available at Opening Ceremony before it hits Target stores nation wide! More details after the jump… Read the full story
