The Oscars: Red Carpet 2009 Review

Marion Cotillard in Dior Haute Couture

The 81st Oscars took place tonight and one word that summed up the night - from the set design, to the fashion - is CLASSY.  It seems like the actors took heed of all the previous award show fashion critiques because most of the dresses were gorgeous and there weren’t many mishaps.  The set design of the show was gorgeous - the curtain was made from 100,000 Swarovski crystals lit from behind.  The band was brought on stage to evoke the big band era of the 1940’s and the way the Best Actor categories were announced brought a few tears to the eyes.  That said, let’s get to the fashion!  There were definitely some trends - the main one being light, neutral colors like white and beige.  One of my favorite dresses of the evening was Nicole Kidman’s but sadly I don’t have a photo.

Pale Perfection

Pale colors were very popular on the red carpet from Marisa Tomei’s white Versace gown to Sarah Jessica Parker’s “barely mint,” pastels were the color of the evening.

Tarji P. Henson in Roberto Cavalli; Evan Rachel Wood in Elie Saab

Ms. Henson’s flower petal dress is gorgeous and she carries it so well. Ms. Wood’s dress is very sophisticated, and together with her retro hair, her look hearkened back to old school Hollywood glamour.  The dangling earrings and black nail polish were a nice touch.

Anne Hathaway in Giorgio Armani Prive; Jessica Biel in Prada

Both dresses are lovely - my only comment about Ms. Biel’s dress is that no matter how great your figure, no one really needs that much extra fabric in front.

Prada Presents Costume Jewelry

Maybe it’s the state of the economy, or maybe it’s just product line growth, but Prada is introducing costume jewelry to it’s expansive collection.  As with everything that Prada does, special materials were commissioned in the creation of this limited edition collection with large clunky links and retro-styled bejeweled baubles.  The costume jewelry will be available in Prada stores in November and range from $395 to $750.  Check out the heavily bejeweled neckalce and earrings set after the jump.

“Transformer” - Prada’s Cultural Events Exhibition Space

Luxury brands have had a long-standing relationship with the arts whether its Louis Vuitton debuting goods designed by Takashi Murakami in a museum (LA & Brooklyn), or Chanel’s Mobile Art Pavillion designed by Zaha Hadid. Prada has always shown an interest in architecture - their boutiques are designed by leading architects and are often works of art themselves. Prada is taking its interest one step further by commissioning Rem Koolhaas to design a tetrahedron structure that will host cultural, art and fashion events that Prada organizes.

The Transformer can be rotated on each side depending on the event, with four different facades and floor plate configurations, so that floors become walls and walls become the ceiling. Each of the four programs will function on unique steel-framed shapes: a hexagon, a cross, a rectangle and a circle.

The transformer will debut in Seoul, Korea next year and will host events from March to July 2009. This is quite an amazing project and I hope that the Transformer makes it’s way stateside.

Gems! Truly Outrageous Prada Resort Collection

prada resort 2009

The resort shows are still going strong and on Tuesday Prada debuted her collection. I always look forward to Miuccia Prada’s shows because she has a way of making anything look new in a chic dignified way. Her resort 2009 collection was simple: The palette was very dark, mostly black with a bit of green and brown. She had lots of windbreaker-like jackets and lightweight trench coats paired with biker shorts and skinny pants. Her triangular bikini tops paired with flowing long skirts was very bohemian - but in a city-girl way - no hippies here. The common thread tying the pieces together were giant gems adorning everything from clothing, shoes and jewelry. These weren’t be-dazzler stones, these were giant clusters of gems that looked like they could maybe be heavy, but looked airy and light. The scene stealers though, were the the earrings (ginormous and bejeweled) and her plain black shoes: A very plain flat slip on and a t-strap. Both were shoes that I could see myself wearing everyday, forever.

If I Was A Rich Girl: Sicilian Getaway

I love to travel, so if I was a rich girl, I would be globe trotting all the time to one of my favorite destinations - Sicily. When I was growing up, during the summer, my parents would take my sisters and me to visit family in Sicilia. Whenever I think of summer time, or get a craving for the yummiest Italian food, or just want to lie on the beach, my first thought is always Sicily. Right now, I long for the calm quiet beaches. The cool blue Mediterranean is relatively untouched as not many tourists go down that far in Italy. I’d have to jet set in style of course and my travels wouldn’t be complete without my Louis Vuitton luggage, Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil, Prada 18IS sunglasses, Chanel sandals and La Mer moisturizer.

More Fashion Videos

We’ve seen a rise in the adoption of film and video in portraying fashion campaigns. A few weeks back we reported on videos for Spring & Clifton and Agent Provocateur. We just got word of some other fashion videos that you may get a kick out of.

The first one is very funny and a bit naughty but has to do with “shoe love.”

This one from Prada is gorgeous and does a great job of using the imagery to highlight themes and pieces from the collection.

Happy Viewing! I’m sure we can expect to see more of these popping up. I don’t know about you but I like this trend and see it as a whole new canvas for fashion companies to work with. I’m excited to see what’s to come!

Is the Prada fairy melting?!

prada-campaign.jpg

If there were ever a time to rejoice in being broke, it would be now.

Miuccia Prada may not win the masses over with her Art Nouveau-ish collection of skinny-rib knits, flared trousers, and checkered dresses this season, but the fairy bag she created with artist James Jean is driving people completely b-a-n-a-n-a-s.

Like any good “it bag, the fairy bag, which retails for $2290, has an annoying three month waiting list and the only people currently toting the bags - of course - are celebrities: Tilda Swiden, Sienna Miller, Catherine Deneuve, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Bee Schaeffer.

Well, there are a few “commoners who managed to snag one and although they love their new purchase - it seems to be melting. The ink on the handbags is bleeding. According to Purseblog, quite a few people have been complaining to Prada SA’s about the problem. It’s unknown if Madame Prada and co. will be giving people refunds, but there definitely will measures in place to make sure the next round of bags are a more water-resistant.

Eh, we still wouldn’t mine owning one.

Colette x YSL Envelope Clutch

Yves Saint Laurent and Colette got together to make this envelope clutch that I love. I’ve seen a bunch of envelope style clutches lately from the likes of Prada and Gucci, but this takes it to the next level by taking the term “envelope” literally. The bag opens like an envelope and is “addressed” to YSL with the return address as 213 rue Saint-Honoré - Colette’s address of course! The bag comes in silver metal leather and is limited to 10 pieces.

The back view after the jump . . .
