Fashion Meets Music: 52nd Annual Grammy Awards

Lady Gaga stuns in this custom Armani Prive dress and crystal body suit

Lady Gaga stuns in this custom Armani Prive dress and crystal body suit

The morning after! Music’s biggest award show brought out all of the stars to celebrate the industry. The Grammy’s were a bit more entertaining as musicians will be a bit more daring with their fashion than actors.  Here we featured some of our favorite looks along with, ya know, those other ones.

Lady Gaga obviously killed it with her Armani Privé custom crystal dazzler. She did it right! Ladies, wear couture to awards shows – come on!  Check out Nicola Formichetti’s blog for complete coverage of each outfit she wore during the show. How did she know yellow was my favorite color, her hair looks amazing with the yellow added in.

Pink looked incredible. Wearing a haute couture gown she would certainly not have to worry about showing up in the same dress as someone else.  She looked exceptionally  lady like for a musician that is proud to not be like those other girls.  She definitely worked it well – though her performance outfit was a bit TMI.

Katy Perry recently was engaged to Russell Brand during a trip to India but I think she took her South Asian inspiration a bit too far.  The elephant purse was a bit much and the Bindi was a bit Gwen Stefani circa the 90s.

As far as trends for the night, sparkles and shine ruled (they are “stars” aren’t they?) and colors remained pretty neutral – mostly blacks, whites and neutrals like beige.

This show was definitely more entertaining than the Globes (fashion-wise) but still not what I would expect – all out glamour!  I can’t wait for the Oscars – I hope the celebrities don’t disappoint!

Fashion Meets Music End Of Year Wrap Up

Michael Jackson's influence will live on for generations

Michael Jackson's influence will live on for generations

The Fashion Meets Music column is a new addition to the M.I.S.S website. We compile a list of style icons; Modernists, Eccentrics, Classics, It Girls, Rebels, etc., who impress us with their panache and decide on a weekly feature. The collision of fashion and music has always enamored me because the complete package of sound and style can elevate a live experience and inspire you to dazzle in an outfit. We even included two of the most desirable men alive; David Bowie and Pharrell Williams. However, I think its safe to say that 2009 was undeniably the year of the Avant Garde with Lady GaGa serving as its commander-in-chief. Thankfully, her stylist, Nicola Formichetti kept us faithful followers up-to-date with her performances and the genius designers behind the daring stage/everyday combinations that have caught the international fashion press abuzz as well as notable designers. The woman met  Queen Elizabeth!

Pants were left behind and exaggerated shapes pushed forward. Especially in the sharp angular tailoring in the shoulders of jackets courtesy of Christophe Decarnin at Balmain, whose muse was 80’s luminary; the late Michael Jackson. Fashion in the Pop star world definitely became more tough and quite glittery. Accessories mirrored the look of body armor or came studded. Sparkly biker jackets and shiny micro-minis were all over red carpets and fashion editorials. Pink known for her edgy approach to, well, everything, and earthy Colombian songstress, Shakira both arrived at the MTV Video Music Awards in the same diamond chain embellished Balmain leather dress! Even the ladylike and mild mannered Beyonce transformed into Sasha Fierce dripping in Thierry Mugler and Alexander McQueen. Rihanna definitely stepped up her Pop star status with her daring outfits mixing well known designers pieces like Rodarte’s leather diamond laser cut leggings with independent designers like A-Morir by Kerin Rose’s Barracuda sunglasses in the “Run This Town” video. What do you think of her new video? I was feelin’ it until she jumped on a hot pink tank and straddled the cannon in a Mickey Mouse helmet. Oh RiRi.

I was raised by a SoCal mother who would escape to Mexico on the weekends, listened to Led Zepplin, and has the backstage passes in our photo albums to prove it. I’m a rocker at heart. I don’t think I was more excited than the mega return of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Karen O. Hands down the best show I attended this year; opened by Philly’s darling with the dirty mouth and M.I.S.S favorite, Amanda Blank. Karen O’s costume designer, Christian Joy created the visual splendor that she paraded in with her yoga-like stretches while belting out hits like “Heads Will Roll” and  ”Y Control” compelling me to ‘dance until I was dead’ Oh! Too easy. The giant eyeball bouncing about the stage reminded me of the Mishka “Keep Watch” leggings I was rockin’ this year which got just as much fanfare as completely appalled/disgusted looks. Other women who rock that we featured were, The Gossip’s lead singer Beth Ditto, 60’s French Ye Ye Girl Francoise Hardy, artist/fashion designer/Sonic Youth’s lead bassist and singer Kim Gordon, the adorable Katy Perry, and my personal favorite (whom I would probably have a Wayne and Garth “we’re not worthy” moment with if i ever met) Gwen Stefani.

The Almighty Karen O

The Almighty Karen O

Then there are the musician/designer collabos that set the internetz on fire. Kanye West and Louis Vuitton put out a few version’s of a high priced sneaker. Miley Cyrus and Wal-Mart recently teamed up for a capsule collection. The Kings of Leon (swoon) teamed up with the Paris-based creative collective, Surface to Air, on a flannel heavy collection of mountain-man staples. Kim Gordon came out with the Mirror/Dash collection at Urban Outfitters. The most enduring style stars that have developed their global brands the best have to be, Pharrell Williams at Billionaire Boys Club and Gwen Stefani at L.A.M.B. What were some of your favorite collaborations? And did you purchase anything?

Gwen Stefani and her Harajuku Girls

Gwen Stefani and her Harajuku Girls

I hope everyone has a fabulous New Year donning their prettiest sparklers, even if your in your PJ’s! Carrie Bradshaw killed it with her sequin hat a la the Sex And The City movie. So looking forward to the next one! And looking forward to discussing more of our fashion inspirations. Peace out 2009!

Fashion Meets Music: 2009 MTV VMA’s

Fashion Meets Music: 2009 MTV VMA’s

Best Dressed at MTV VMAs
The morning after the MTV Video Music Awards, lets recap. The red carpet was sparkling with many stars opting for silver metallic dresses. Favorites rockin the trend were Katy Perry, Leighton Meester, and Kristen Cavallari. Speaking of rockers, Pink stormed in on a fire truck with husband Carey Hart minutes after Shakira walked the carpet wearing the same leather studded mini dress. All was well, and as the show moved inside, the opening tribute to the late Michael Jackson was incredible. Janet’s dance sequence while performing “Scream” evoked the sentiments of a sister saddened by loss, but empowered through their passion for music and dance. Did anyone catch Lauri Ann Gibson and Cris Judd dancing? K-Fed was busy working out.

Pink and Shakira VMA's

Not to be detered by a belligerent Kanye West interrupting her acceptance speech for Best Female in a Video, Taylor Swift delivered a beautiful performance of “You Belong With Me.” The night belonged to the ladies, Beyonce proves again that she is the baddest lady in the game and her performance of “Single Ladies” was on point. Pink performed “Sober” with a heart shaped pastie without stepping one toe on the stage. Only Pink can make swinging from a trapeze look effortless. Lady Gaga brought her aggressive avant garde persona to the stage with “Paparazzi” sure it was shocking, but hey, it’s entertainment.

VMA Fashion Meets Music

As we were looking at the fashion last night it was clear that metallics dresses were everywhere, loved the color choices from Beyonce and Amerie, and the little black dresses were well played with accessories and shoes. Just a few comments, the DJ AM tribute from Kid Cudi, Wale, and UCB should have been on the main stage and where was Rhianna? Congrats to Matt and Kim for Breakthrough Video. Here’s our roundup of some of the best looks of the night, and a few of the worst for good measure.

M.I.S.S. Exclusive: Buff Monster Interview

M.I.S.S. Exclusive: Buff Monster Interview

Buff Monster

M.I.S.S. Exclusive: Buff Monster Interview

Buff Monster is a Dunny making, pink loving, out of the box kinda guy. He sports an ever morphing mo hawk while perusing the streets of Hollywood; yet he has never smoked a cigarette. He is thoroughly consumed by heavy metal music, but he has never tried drugs. He is done dating porn stars but is still dedicated to painting ambiguously boob-like characters and designs, so you can see that B. Monster isn’t your typical painter. His roots are in the streets but his future is in fine art, as he is coming up on his third solo show at Corey Helford Gallery.

Buff Monster

Friday, September 5th: Heavy Metal Ice Cream Smile opens at Corey Helford Gallery

Heavy Metal Ice Cream Smile opens this Friday, September 5th, and we were lucky to snatch a few works with Buff before the big show. Read on for Buff Monster’s favorite pink food, how Japanese culture entered his repertoire, and the upside of getting arrested in NYC.

Buff Monster

The process...

Buff Monster

...in progress...

Buff Monster

The end product.

M.I.S.S.: So you were born in Hawaii- how did your parents end up living there?

My Dad had been to Hawaii when he was in the Air Force or Navy, and then when he met my Mom in Tucson he convinced her to move to Hawaii with him. That was like 5 years before I was born.

M.I.S.S.: What was a typical day growing up in Hawaii?

I have fond memories of riding bikes around with the neighbor kid and my brother. We would catch fish and frogs, hang out at the mall, and screw around on the golf course that was nearby.

Buff Monster

Start them young: A Buff Monster fan.

Buff Monster

The workplace...

Buff Monster

Weapons of choice...for a Monster.

Buff Monster

More of the Buff Monster process...

M.I.S.S.: Is it safe to say that living in Hawaii gave you the initial interest in Japanese art?

Japanese culture is such a big part of local Hawaiian culture that you don’t even notice that things are Japanese. I grew up on Hello Kitty, eating sushi and hanging out with tons of Asian kids. It’s just how it is there.

M.I.S.S.: What’s so “weird” about Hawaii?

The pervasive racism.

M.I.S.S.: As a student, how did you balance such a technical major as business administration with such a creative one as art?

I guess you could say I’m conflicted. I really enjoy both ways of thinking. And on a daily basis I get to be both a business guy and an art guy.

Buff Monster

M.I.S.S.: Give me 10 adjectives that describe “your” shade of pink:

Awesome, pretty, Heavy Metal, perfect, the best, empowering, unique, appropriate, calming, exciting.

M.I.S.S.: Have you traveled to Japan? Was it everything you hoped and dreamed for?

Yes, I went to Japan in 2003. It was really great to see everything first hand. I was really stoked to have Japanese Japanese food. Whenever I travel, I always try to eat as much local food as I can.

Buff Monster

Yum.

Buff Monster

Mini Buff Monsters

M.I.S.S.: What is your main source of income?

Guess.

M.I.S.S.: Does your girlfriend like heavy metal?

I don’t have a girlfriend. Very few of my Ex’s like Heavy Metal.

M.I.S.S.: How does the chaotic energy of heavy metal translate into your clean, calculated paintings?

I really like the approach of Heavy Metal. It’s passionate: it’s raw and pure. It doesn’t ask for permission and it doesn’t make apologies. And separate from that, it really calms me down and inspires me to keep working for long periods of time when I’m beat.

M.I.S.S.: What was your worst experience doing street art?

Getting arrested sucks, but it never ruined my day. Except when I spent the night in Central Booking in NYC. That wasn’t so cool. I like having life experiences. It gives me good stories to tell.

Buff Monster

Ice Cream makes everyone smile. Even monsters.

M.I.S.S.: Best late night munchies in Hollywood?

The latest I stay out is when I’m putting up posters. Benito’s is always good because they’re open late. We did Astro Burger last time.

M.I.S.S.: Who is your favorite actor/actress?

I really don’t pay much attention to all that bullshit, but I do like Christian Bale for some reason.

M.I.S.S.: Is it true that you don’t smoke or drink? How do you unwind, let loose, go out with friends?

I’ve never done drugs. I’ve never even smoked a cigarette, but I drink a bit. I love Guiness. But now that I’m just getting ready for my show, it’s been several weeks since I’ve had a drink.

M.I.S.S.: Do you have any pink little pets? (I’m imagining a pink mini poodle…)

My last pets were Sea Monkeys and I couldn’t even keep them from dying.

Buff Monster

Buff Monster at work on a lovely canvas.

M.I.S.S.: Favorite pink foods?

Besides vagina?

M.I.S.S.: What do you have to say to haters?

I don’t think there is much you can say. To quote Andy Warhol, “They’re right.”

M.I.S.S.: Most fetish-inducing vinyl toy you’ve seen this month?

I freaked out about a new toy from Blobpus, which is my favorite kaiju company.

Buff Monster

Buff Monster Toy

Buff Monster

Yet another amazing Buff Monster toy.

M.I.S.S.: What are you most proud of in your new book, Life is Sweet?

I’m most proud of the book itself. I took nearly all the photos, did all the work presented in there, and laid out the whole thing. I basically did the whole book by myself. It was a lot of work, but I’m really happy with how it came out.

M.I.S.S.: What’s your real name?

Buff Monster

M.I.S.S.: If people could walk away from your upcoming show with one emotion, what would you want that to be?

Happy.

Hilarious.

Looks like sneaker companies are not the only ones that think in order to make something appealing to women, they need to make something pink. The first video is a joke, the second video is not.
