M.I.S.S. x AKDMKS: AKDMKS ‘Dip Dye Jean Pant’ Give Away Winner

And the winners are…Connie Min and Cassandra Miller!! Thank-you to all the lovely ladies that entered the AKDMKS ‘DipDue Jean Pant’ contest! As always it’s never easy to choose but these ladies not only answered the three trivia questions correctly but impressed us with their answers to the bonus question.

The correct answers:

1: What is the name of the dyeing technique to get the gradient look?
Ombré dyeing, from the French word meaning “to shade.”

2: What Italian fashion house brought this dye technique trend back with its Fall 2007 Ready to Wear collection?
Alberta Ferretti and/or Prada

3: What year was AKDMKS founded?
1999

Bonus Question: Why should you be selected to win?

Connie Min:

I should be selected to win because although I am a fabulous fashionista in every sense, in this current economic downfall, it is increasingly harder to get the latest trends as a full-time student. In a town like LA, it’s really hard to stand out amongst the thousands of fashionable people. It would show my inner fierceness, inside and out. RAWR!

Cassandra Miller:

I always try to stay fresh when it comes to my fashion sense and how I present myself, and am a devote M.I.S.S. subscriber. When Prada debuted this look, I was studying in Italy and had to walk pass the store front window everyday to get to class, my love for color and luxury retail just screamed on the inside. Prada is definitely no in my budget, and after returning to the Bay, I was let-go from my job, smashing my fashion/eat/live budget even more. I still remain on my game mixing n matching items from the past with the present and have started making many items that i wear along with making most of the jewelry i wear as well. I haven’t bought a pair of jeans in almost 2 maybe 3 years…ouch! : ( : ) so it would be great to win a pair. I love rocking color all day everyday and could spice these up with stilettos or rock’em w/ some dope kicks. I would be very grateful!

M.I.S.S. Interviews LA Graffiti Legend Chaka

Chaka Solo Show Opening Night

Chaka Solo Show Opening Night

A few weeks back, we posted about LA graffiti artist CHAKA and his first solo show at Mid-City Arts.

Although M.I.S.S. was unable to attend the April 25th event, we got word that the opening night of the show was a success! Everything was created new for this show, but in the style that CHAKA was renowned for. We’re told more than 700 people came through making it a memorable night for the artist and those in attendance. LA’s graffiti community came through in support. Artists in attendance included: RISK, SLICK, REVOK, RETNA, RIME, SEVER and Estevan Oriol.

Daniel Ramos AKA CHAKA was definitely in attendance.

Chaka

Our very own OHW got up with CHAKA days before his solo show. The graffiti legend revealed stories about growing up in a violent neighborhood in Los Angeles and how he went from catching his first tag with his brother to becoming the infamous CHAKA, literally covering California from Orange County, througout Los Angeles, and all the way up to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. We also lace this M.I.S.S. Crew exclusive with images from the opening. Read on…

The cityscape-inspired exhibit recalled the peak of Chaka’s tagging activities.

M.I.S.S.: CHAKA on himself and on his art…

I’ve always wanted to be someone. I’ve always been driven. Ever since the first time I picked up a can, I knew that it was me. That’s what I was born for. Getting my name out there. It was something I woke up to. I would breath it. But I didn’t focus on any other writers. I was my own favorite writer. I knew I wanted to be the best. Jump around a bunch of cities… jump around ten hours a night…wait till the sun would come up. I would walk up the main streets…all the way up. An 8 to 10 hour walk…Intersection to Intersection hitting up minimum of 50 “CHAKA’s”…

Everyone was using these connecting handstyles. No one was using fat caps. Black/White/Silver. Freeway overpasses—I managed to get up there like a tree climber and every time an 18 wheeler would drive by I would  have to stop…it would make everything shake.

Chaka Solo Show Opening Night

Walls, fire hydrants, newspaper bins, street signs were all on display, embellished with Chaka’s tag.

M.I.S.S.: CHAKA on growing-up in his Los Angeles neighborhood

Once we found a body hanging from a tree with guts exposed down to the grass…Another time, my mom found two bodies in the front lawn. The ambulance said they would pick the bodies up in the morning and my mom had to cover up the bodies because there were no pick-ups at night. As a child I would would play games following trails of blood drips only to find hand prints and puddles of blood.

This other time, my brother’s friend got shot in the abdomen and when I called 911, the operator said that they didn’t serve the area I was calling from and that we would have to take him to the hospital ourselves.

My brother was also a writer. He wrote “SHAFT” and he was the one that took me out writing for my first time. He’s now a tattoo artist in Boston.

M.I.S.S.: CHAKA on goingAll-City” and beyond…

I proudly rep LOD Crew. I would hit major cities. Take two months per city. I went to San Francisco via Greyhound and met up with DREAM (RIP) [ Bay Area Graff Legend who died young] and hit up the Bay spots….Market street, North Beach Pier and the Golden Gate Bridge. I also hit up the Oakland tracks and freeways up and down California.

I live in Bakersfield [California] now but still visit LA and spend time with the LOD Crew.

The interior of the gallery, as well as the back yard was completely covered with Chaka’s various tags.

M.I.S.S.: What would you do differently?

There were the opportunities, t-shirts, posters…the owner of a Chinese food chain said he would pay for four years of Cal State Northridge for me. Paramount pictures wanted to work on a script with me…I was excited about all the opportunities.

I look back but I’m happy. If I had done all of that, if I had made money, I would have had to pay all of the fines and I would have been working for them—for the system.

Any bad thing you do has its consequences. If anyone wants to do some heavy damage, there are some heavy penalties to pay. Once you get caught there are felony charges, they did not have felony charges during my time.

M.I.S.S.: What’s next for CHAKA?

Depends on what happens after this. I have no real plans.

Thanks to Elemental for the images and to CHAKA for his insight into the LA graffiti world. You can view more from CHAKA’s opening night in Elemental’s CHAKA Flickr set.

What Do We Want? Small Sizes! When Do We Want It? Now!

Girrrrrls, there’s only one thing worse than a pair of kicks being sold out, and that’s the shoe not being available in your size in the first place!  Most of the shoes that I like and want are never sized down small enough for my little feet.  No quickstrikes, no tier zeros, no limited-edition fill-in-your-favorite-sneaker-company here.  What’s a girl to do??  Sign the Female Sneaker Fiend Petition! FSF has a petition going to show support for offering men’s kicks in smaller size runs so that women can have the same chance to get those kicks that we all want, but can’t have.  Here’s what Female Sneaker Fiend says:

De la souls? Stussy 25th Anniversary’s? Sole Collector event colorways? As if these sneakers aren’t hard enough to find, how about finding them in a size 5? Why is it that the hottest sneakers, the most fashionable and creative, are coming out only in men’s sizes? Why is it that anyone under a men’s US7 is considered a “youth”? Women are sneaker enthusiasts just like their male counter-parts, and it’s unfair to us that the hottest new sneakers don’t size down small enough. We hunt just as hard as the men, we wait in lines that are just as long, we pay just as much money, and yet more often than not many of us end up disappointed because companies don’t size small enough and disregard catering to women when limited editions come out. As if that isn’t bad enough, some of the nicest boutiques don’t even carry the smaller sizes, even when they’re made!

Not all women who love sneakers are tag-alongs for their boyfriends. We should be able to have the same opportunity to collect and purchase sneakers just like men. We all want the perfect kicks to add to our collection. We all want the same chances to expand our collections. Instead it’s a struggle to stand on our own as we travel from shop to shop and drop money into an industry that obviously does not bother to notice our growing numbers.

We who sign this petition want all the major sneaker brands to carry their most popular and most exclusive products in smaller sizes. We are not “youth,” we are grown women with killer sneaker collections. We can and will buy all the hottest stuff if it’s in our size.

Does that sound familiar? It’s an all too familiar story with me - that’s why I signed the petition, and you should too!  Sign the petition here and many good lookin’ out Female Sneaker Fiend!

Mirror, Mirror: Nike Be True Opening

mirror mirror
A few weeks back we went to the Nike Be True photo exhibition opening at the Hamburger Eyes studio in San Francisco. It’s always a bit chilly here (even in summer) so I always have a scarf with me. I thought I’d “be true” so I wore one of my favorite Nike iD Dunk Highs that I made in the NY studio. It was a fun night and saw some great photos by talented photographers. Here’s what I wore:

Nameplate: Mama
Manicure: “Gucci”
Top: American Apparel Long Sleeve Baby Thermal Tee
Scarf: Cheetah Print - No Brand
Jacket: Leather Bomber, Keednim
Tote Bag: Futura Laboratories
Jeans: AG
Kicks: Nike iD Dunk Highs, “Gucci” colors/”Always A Lady” iD

If I Was A Rich Girl: Sicilian Getaway

I love to travel, so if I was a rich girl, I would be globe trotting all the time to one of my favorite destinations - Sicily. When I was growing up, during the summer, my parents would take my sisters and me to visit family in Sicilia. Whenever I think of summer time, or get a craving for the yummiest Italian food, or just want to lie on the beach, my first thought is always Sicily. Right now, I long for the calm quiet beaches. The cool blue Mediterranean is relatively untouched as not many tourists go down that far in Italy. I’d have to jet set in style of course and my travels wouldn’t be complete without my Louis Vuitton luggage, Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil, Prada 18IS sunglasses, Chanel sandals and La Mer moisturizer.
