The first official day of summer may have just passed but here at M.I.S.S. we’re already looking towards the future - which in this case is fall! OBEY’s given us a little glimpse of what’s to come and we’re already itching to see more. You might remember that M.I.S.S. had a chance to catch up with Erin Wignall, OBEY’S women’s designer, in Las Vegas this past February, where we learned that OBEY’s fall collection will be divided into two themes, Cosmic and Military Nautical. The Cosmic features a color palette of black, white, and grey and draws on inspiration from the 1970s. Military Nautical features a seafaring influence that includes pea coats and nautical stripes.
From the tiny visual taste we were given, it’s obvious that OBEY will be churning out timeless pieces that are sure to be closet staples. The plaid shirt/denim skirt combination is both classic and feminine, with just enough coverage as the summer heat gives way into cool crisp autumn air. The same goes for OBEY’s wrap dress, a flattering silhouette that’s a must-have for any female’s wardrobe.
The rest of OBEY’s fall collection drops at the end of July. You can bet that M.I.S.S. will bring you up-to-date coverage as more images of the collection are released! To shop OBEY’s current collections, check the OBEY online store.
Obey’s summer ’09 ladies line has crash landed on to their website, with a look that screams contemporary chic rather than just pretty tees and hoodies. Obey are best known for stepping over the ‘safe’ boundaries with their distinctive graphic designs that often hold political views, and messages to raise awareness for specific movements (Obama HOPE and PROGRESS print anyone?) Obey are highly commended for these prints and tees, but you know us ladies also appreciate the softer touch that are seen with the summer drop of city basics and streetwear staples!
Obey’s spring 2009 drop left a great impression on us with their collection of stunning jewellery and accessories (ahem…Chanel-Esq. “Working Girl” Laptop bag), making us yearn for more. Now that their summer collection, phase two of SS09, has launched on the Obey Web Store, the wait is over.
Obey has come through with their perfect-for-the-beach/city-strolling dresses in the form of the “Summer Sunrise” and also “Summer Eyes” dresses – just throw it over the bikini yo! Come twilight, replace the ‘summer in the city’ look and reach for the “Touch & Go” 100% silk charmeuse racer-back cami, with the cute chain heart charm. The rompers are still present and doing its thang with Obey’s summer drop, just as it did with the spring loot, now welcoming the “Phasers” romper to the familio. And, Obey wouldn’t be Obey without some graphic print t-shirts. The lightweight tri-blend “Party with the Posse” tee will most definitely bring the heat for summertime.
The OBEY Ladies’ Spring line has dropped in shops and online with a bang! Along with the usual basics and streetwear staples the collection features washed out denim, cute rompers, high-waisted shorts, dresses, button up shirts and tank tops. With a palette of mostly blacks, greys and purples, OBEY have also made good use of a number of plaid patterns across dresses, woven tops, tanks, and camis.
Definite highlights would have to be the Fern shorts romper (with adjustable sleeves, patched pockets and waist strap), Double Dutch dress (with a woven belt below the bust and just enough stud detail at the straps) and the nautically-inspired Boardwalk tank (with a double-breasted placket and rope tie around the waist).
This season, Obey teamed up with photojournalist Martha Cooper, best known for documenting the New York graff scene in the 70s and 80s. The tees, totes and skate deck features various shots of children playing in the streets on the lower east side of NY during the 70s, as well as one of Martha’s photos illustrated by the talented hand of Shepard Fairey.
The collection also includes a full line of jewellery, a Chanel-inspired laptop bag, hats, and scarves. Read on to see more! Read the full story
We had the chance to meet with Erin Wignall, the women’s designer at Obey and she personally walked us through the line. For Fall 2009, the collection is broken up into two themes: “Cosmic” and Military Nautical. The Cosmic collection takes its influence from the 1970’s - think the Rolling Stones at their prime. The collection features details like motorcycle zippers, distressed denim and a dark androgynous look. The color palette for Cosmic is black, white and grey with a dose of metallic thrown in. The metallic touch represents the “disco” part of the Seventies.
The second theme is a military look influenced by the Navy with a bit of French Nautical as well. The line includes sailor stripes, pea coats, roll collar jackets and sweaters. The Nautical collection includes lots of wool and chambray with the color palette featuring navy and mustard yellow.
Each season Obey works on 2 special projects: an artist collab and an awareness project. For Fall 09, Obey created a special M65 jacket featuring a photo by Al Rockoff (pictured above). For the upcoming awareness project expect to see a t-shirt benefiting a great cause.

A while back when I wrote about the launch of the new Obey site, I gushed about how I needed the faux leather jacket with leopard fur-lined hoodie in my life. The people at Obey agreed and were kind enough to send me one - and I’ve been wearing it since. The jacket is perfect for winter in California. It’s faux leather so I don’t have to worry about rain ruining the leather and it’s the perfect weight and keeps me really warm. My favorite part of course is the faux fur-lined hoodie - it’s so comfy, keeps me cozy and looks great. I also got a tee so read the full story to check out the rest of the pictures. If you want to get one of your own, you can get it here.

A few weeks back the M.I.S.S. Crew was in full effect to check out It’s Pop It’s Art hosted by iLL-Literacy, a Bay Area spoken word crew. There were four of us that made it out: Lexx, Michelle, Liz and myself. Here’s a peak into what Lexx and I wore - Michelle and Liz’s outfits coming up shortly!
If I remember correctly, I was having a pretty bad day and had to drag myself out of the apartment. Comfort is always key for me and I took it to new heights by going out in sweatpants. I know, I know, I am officially contributing to the pajamafication of the U.S.A. It’s not my fault that they are the best sweatpants EVA. Anyway, you heard it here first, Sweatpants Are The New Black.
I know I should have told you earlier, but Digital Gravel is having the ill accelerating sale that gives you bigger discounts every day…the thing is, the longer you wait…the less likely the items you want are still gonna be there. Pick up ladies gear from Obey, In4mation, Upper Playground, Fifty24SF, Tens, Blood Is The New Black and many more. Sleep or don’t sleep…all I know is, your tee collection is looking kind of tired. Zingo baby!
