Nike Underground Screening of “B-Girl”

"B-Girl" Movie Premier at Moutablan Theater Presented by Nike Sportswear

"B-Girl" Movie Premier at Moutablan Theater Presented by Nike Sportswear

A few of weeks ago M.I.S.S. was invited to attend an exclusive underground screening of the independent feature film B-Girl at that the Montablan Theater sponsored by Nike Sportwear. B-Girl is the story about a female breakdancer trying to find her place in the world of underground hip-hop that was created by males. What sets this film apart from other dance films is it stars the very talented b-girl Lady Jules (of the Beat Freaks) who you’ll probably recognize from last season’s America’s Next Best Dance Crew and some of the most elite b-boys out there!

A Spike Lee Joint: “Kobe Doin’ Work” Screening at Nike Sportswear NYC

Last week, Nike Sportswear held an advanced screening of Spike Lee’s documentary on Kobe Bryant, “Kobe Doin’ Work“. Held at 21 Mercer, they transformed the store into a mini sized movie theater complete with popcorn and nachos! You got the perks of the theater but the luxury of someone bringing it to you and no sticky floors here folks!

Spike Lee was in attendance and introduced the film. For the next 83 minutes we watched Kobe at work. The film followed him during the Lakers face off with the San Antonio Spurs in the Spring of 2008. Wearing a wireless mic and 30 cameras from all different angles on him the viewer gets an intimate look at Kobe on the court and in the locker room. Kobe narrates the film and shares his thoughts and feelings during the game, after the game and about the game. He talks about how running out onto the court before the game still gives him “goosebumps”. Watching the game Kobe gives you the inside scoop on how certain players play and what to watch out for. He laughs and jokes along the way, talking trash in Italan to teammate Sasha Vijacic, Kobe calls his team “the United Nations of Basketball” with teammates hailing from so many different Countries. After the game win or lose he always reflects what could have gone better on the court. Although not the coach, he was portrayed as a mentor and leader amongest his team. And really when you got the skills to pay the bills and the years of experience like Kobe, this makes complete sense.

Continue the read to watch video of Spike Lee doing Q and A, words straight from Kobe and info on Spike Lee’s documentary on Michael Jordan!

Nike Sportswear T-Shirts: In A T-Shirt State of Mind

The good ‘ol cotton t-shirt.  It’s up there with denim jeans and Chuck Taylors - simple, classic and a staple of mine (and many others’) casual wardrobe.  With smaller t-shirt brands constantly co-opting established brand identities, it’s refreshing to see brands make use of their own icons.  Case in point - Nike t-shirts.  I’ve seen many shirts that make use of the Swoosh - but can say “Just Do It” the way a real Nike t-shirt can.

As part of the new Nike Sportswear line, Nike has issued tees featuring the Swoosh in all it’s glory.  From the oversized logo to the retro sunburst - there’s a Nike iteration that you’ll love.  One of my favorites is the NSW tee - it’s subtle and it’s also a Dri-fit tee so it’s perfect for working out.  If these tees aren’t in the colors you want, then you can actually create your own à la the iD feature - yep, it’s not just for shoes!

If repping a brand is not your steeze and you’d rather rep a team then there’s plenty of college and professional teams to choose from.  My personal fave?  The black on black NY Met’s tee - what else did you expect from a Flushing girl?  You can get your Nike tee at the Nike Sportswear Webstore.

NIKE Sportswear at The Montalbán Presents CINEMA TUESDAYS: The Present

A couple of weeks ago I braved the dreadful traffic out of Orange County to make it to the Los Angeles premiere of Thomas Campell’s new Super 16mm surf film THE PRESENT presented by Nike Sportswear as part of the Cinema Tuesdays series, curated by Flux at The Montalbán Theater in Hollywood. The screening was presented in association with ANP Quarterly and the very awesome BL!SSS Magazine.

Photos by Marla Aufmuth for Flux

Of all the Cinema Tuesday’s events I’ve attended, this one by far brought in the biggest crowd. Being that I’m not a surfer myself, I had no idea what to expect from the screening. Luckily, I ran into a friend who filled me in on how much the surf/skate industry was anticipating the release of this film. After seeing the film, I understand why!

THE PRESENT is a colorful and and artistic exploration of the beautiful environment surfers play in everyday. Throw in a funny skit and some exotic overseas travels and you end up with a classic surf film narrative. All of this happens to the backdrop of a timeless, down-tempo soundtrack that has been a hallmark of Campbell’s other works. According to Campbell, The Present’s basic premise is, “Taking a view into our lives as surfers on this planet, and showing that this moment—in our surfing lives right now—is a gift.”

Whether you surf, skate, or just wish you did (that would be me :-)) THE PRESENT is a film worth seeing.

The Nike Sportswear Cinema Tuesday series has not dissappointed this year. I am looking forward to what’s up next month. For more info on the upcoming schedule check out Nikesportwear.com or film curators Flux.net . Remember tickets are FREE, but an RSVP is a must!

Also, don’t forget to check out the retail store at The Montalbán for all your Nike Sportswear shopping needs.

Store hours are:
Wednesday & Thursday 11am-9pm
Friday & Saturday 11am-10pm
Sunday 12pm-8pm

NIKE Sportswear at The Montalbán Presents CINEMA TUESDAYS: NOTORIOUS

The Nike Sportswear Cinema Tuesday Series started 2009 in a big way this Tuesday by showing a special advanced screening of the much anticipated film NOTORIOUS directed by George Tillman Jr., about the legendary hip hop artist Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace. This screening was definitely the place to be on Tuesday night ( Flo Rida, Macy Gray, and even Sharon Stone were there!), and thanks to the good people at Nike Sportswear M.I.S.S. Crew was in attendance :)

Presented in conjunction with URB Magazine, the evening started off with DJ sets by MC Lyte and DJ Smiles Davis playing hip hop classics setting the mood and getting the crowd ready to watch the film. NOTORIOUS tells the story about the remarkable rise and all-too-short career of “The Notorious B.I.G.” Jamal Woolard’s portrayal of Biggie shows his journey from Brooklyn street hustler to one of hip hops most talented and successful rappers.

Set against a backdrop of some of the Notorious B.I.G.’s greatest hits and including characters such as Puffy, Lil’ Kim, Faith Evans, and Tupac, this film is a definite must see! NOTORIOUS will be released in theaters this Friday January 16th.

Cinema Tuesdays will be monthly in 2009. For more info on the upcoming schedule check out Nikesportwear.com or film curators Flux.net. Remember tickets are FREE, but an RSVP is a must!

NIKE Sportswear at The Montalbán Presents CINEMA TUESDAYS: TIMECRIMES

A couples weeks ago I was able to make it to another Nike Sportswear Cinema Tuesdays to view a special advance screening of the Spanish thriller TIMECRIMES.

The director of the film Nacho Vigalondo was in attendance and introduced the Oscar-nominated short about a man who accidentally travels back in time and finds himself involved in an unpredictable crime. The film was not your typical futuristic time travel movie. TIMECRIMES opens in theaters on December 12th as part of Magnet’s Six Shooter Film Series.

That night there was also a Karaoke Challenge and guests were invited to sign up and join Nacho and special guest Raina Lee (author of Hit Me With Your Best Shot: The Ultimate Guide To Karaoke Domination) sing on stage. Although I was really tempted, I couldn’t do it! Luckily there were plenty of people in the audience willing to sing their hearts out.

Remember to check out Nikesportwear.com or Flux.net Flux.net for information on Cinema Tuesdays. The December schedule is TBD to keep checking either website for updates.Tickets are FREE but you have to RSVP!

NIKE Sportswear at The Montalbán Presents CINEMA TUESDAYS: Part of Weekend Never Dies

This week I made my second trip to Cinema Tuesdays by Nike Sportswear
at The Montalbán
to view the U.S. Premiere of the music documentary Part of the Weekend Never Dies about the Belgian electronic music juggernaut Soulwax (a.k.a Radio Soulwax, 2ManyDJs, & Radio Nite Versions), directed by Partizan director Saam Farahmand and Soulwax.

Fans of Soulwax came out in full force to view the film and party with the folks at Nike Sportswear & Flux. With drinks flowing and music performances by Jason Bentley, Daedelus and C-TOWN, the crowd stayed energized from the moment they walked into the theater until the music stopped after the film. With Halloween just around the corner of course there had to be a costume contest. The best dressed won an exclusive Halloween meet and greet with Busy P and Justice at The Montalbán, a limited-edition pair of Busy P x Nike Air Force 1 from 1WORLD collection sneakers, a one-year subscription to Anthem Magazine, and a pair of VIP Tickets to the HARD Fest on Halloween night. Umm hello! I wish I would’ve dressed up!

Thank you to Nike Sportswear, Flux and Anthem Magazine for bringing this documentary to the Cinema Tuesday series. This documentary is a must see for any true music lover and for anyone who wants to learn about a scene that is defining today’s young generation. The documentary displays the genius of Soulwax’s music and brings you in to the excitement and chaos of the electronic music scene.

Remember to check out Nikesportwear.com or Flux.net for information on Cinema Tuesdays. Tickets are FREE but you have to RSVP! Tomorrow night at The Montalbán Nike Sportswear will introduce the Busy P x Nike Air Force 1 along with the West Coast premiere of JUSTICE A CROSS THE UNIVERSE.

Last Tuesday Nike Sportswear cordially invited MISS Crew to attend their weekly film screening series in L.A., CINEMA TUESDAYS at The Montalbán curated by Flux. Of course I was there in full effect to represent for MISS Crew in LA : )

That night the audience viewed an advanced sreening of the dark poetic vampire film Let the Right One In by award-winning Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson. In addition to the film, the audience enjoyed Swedish hor d’oeuvres, music by DJ Valida, and drinks from the bar sponsred by Belvedere Vokda.

Movie goers enjoying some popcorn and a beer.

Cinema Tuesdays by Nike Sportswear was definitely a good way to spend a Tuesday evening. The event combines the old Hollywood feel of The Montalbán with new ideas and artists that are truely unique. Good art, good music, good drinks, and good people…always sounds like a good time to me.

If you live in L.A. and haven’t attended a Nike Sportswear Cinema Tuesday no need to worry! Fortunately Cinema Tuesdays will be running until the end of this year. Admission is free and open to the public!!! It can’t get any better than that. Tickets are available on a first come first serve basis and an RSVP is necessary. For more info visit Nikesportswear.net or flux.net.
