There is so much to celebrate this July! Besides the obvious BBQ filled days that are fast approaching this 4th of July weekend, this month is also another release in the Reebok Basquiat Freestyle Hi Beat Bop series.  This ongoing series has an offering of two styles for the ladies and two for the men. I should be selected to win because although I am a fabulous fashionista in every sense, in this current economic downfall, it is increasingly harder to get the latest trends as a full-time student. In a town like LA, it’s really hard to stand out amongst the thousands of fashionable people. It would show my inner fierceness, inside and out. RAWR!

Cassandra Miller:

I always try to stay fresh when it comes to my fashion sense and how I present myself, and am a devote M.I.S.S. subscriber. When Prada debuted this look, I was studying in Italy and had to walk pass the store front window everyday to get to class, my love for color and luxury retail just screamed on the inside. Prada is definitely no in my budget, and after returning to the Bay, I was let-go from my job, smashing my fashion/eat/live budget even more. I still remain on my game mixing n matching items from the past with the present and have started making many items that i wear along with making most of the jewelry i wear as well. I haven’t bought a pair of jeans in almost 2 maybe 3 years…ouch! : ( : ) so it would be great to win a pair. I love rocking color all day everyday and could spice these up with stilettos or rock’em w/ some dope kicks. I would be very grateful!

June marks the release of the Kime Buzzelli “Wellesely” Vans.  Available in two color-ways, this sneaker features the artwork of LA based artist Kime Buzzelli. Her world of fantastical ladies and gents are captured by using watered down paints and markers. She creates dream-like scenarios  “inspired by fashion, film and make believe” and has graced the Vans ‘Wellesely’ with her artwork for this June release. These sneakers are strictly for the ladies and come in the turquoise blue featured as M.I.S.S. June and in black. The collection features more than sneakers and can be viewed in our coverage of our visit with Vans at Magic this past February.

M.I.S.S. Healthy Bites: Pro Nails

Whether you get them did, do it yourself, or rock them natural, your nails need care that can’t be polished on.  Kid Sister’s song, Pro Nails, might not focus on a healthy diet, but keep her song as a reminder of what to eat to keep your digits lookin’ fly: PRO-TEIN.  Protein, which you can get from meat, dairy, eggs, nuts, legumes, and whole grains, is not only good for healthy hair, skin, and muscles.  Pack the protein on your plate and your nails will also benefit from it.  After all, nails are made of keratin, the same type of protein found in your hair and skin.  Protein deficiency could lead to fragile nails, and nothing can ruin your day like a broken nail.  Vegetarian?  Read the post on protein to get some ideas of how to get it without meat.

Aside from protein, consuming calcium will promote nail growth.  Nails grow at a rate of about 0.1 millimeter a day, so get your calcium on the daily.  No need to chug glasses of milk, because dark leafy greens contain calcium as well.  Try spinach, chard, kale, and even broccoli to get the mineral that not only strengthens nails, but also bones and teeth.

From just looking at your nails, you can get a gauge on how healthy you are.  Nails that are strong and smooth usually determine that you’re getting the nutrients that you need, but nails that are dry, brittle, or even discolored could indicate that you need to make some changes in your diet.  For instance, if you find little white specs on your nails, it could mean that you’re not getting enough zinc.  A glass of milk or hard boiled egg will help balance that out, as well as give you protein and calcium.  Eating healthy does so much for your body.

This week in NYC the Jacob Javits Center hosted the International Beauty Show. Kat & I were fortunate to attend on behalf of M.I.S.S. and uncover some of the future beauty trends you may see at a salon near you sometime this year. It was a blast! We received a crazy detoxification that I’m still not 100% sure was legit. My dad says it’s a farce. I kinda believe him, it was just too weird and disgusting to be true. The upside was we saw new hair techniques, amazing nails that lit up, stylists dancing while cutting hair (scary), new nail techniques, new spa treatments and it seems everyone wants soy in their products right now.

Upon arrival we found a bunch of un-noteworthy crap and Kat stumbled upon grown men & women sitting with their feet in what looked like tubs of mud at the Detox for Life booth. She thought we should try this new technique, which she hears is pretty popular in Asia. As we sat down and put our feet into the freezing cold water, I was thinking the treatment was free, she hands over her credit card and tells me we are actually paying $40 each for this detoxification. “Oh joy” Is what I’m thinking, still grossed out. We uncovered the entire process live via youtube. It’s pretty entertaining and I realize if this whole music thing doesn’t work out I’ll have a great career in journalism or the newsroom.

After we got the “toxins” out of our system I found the Migi Nail Art booth. This is pretty cool, but seems expensive although they do offer “free refills for life.”  It’s a new nail art pen anyone can use. It works like a pen of nail polish, only you squeeze the pen harder and more nail polish comes out. The “Art” aspect is easy, using the pen for only thin lines & dots.
