Blood Is The New Black

Blood Is The New Black is a label based in LA and headed by Mitra Khayyam who admits that although having an interest in art, her skills were limited – which is how the label was born. Emerging and established artists are given the chance to design a t-shirt print for the label, which pretty much means the possibilities are endless. Along with the t-shirts, this year the collection featured wallets with designs by various artists. Being a stickler for a good t-shirt my favourite piece featured at the tradeshow would have to have been the ‘Grace Monster’ tee, by Sophie Stephens – A fierce take on an amazing fashion icon. Awesome.

Other artists to be featured in the current collection are: Milano Chow, Brian Lichetenberg, Keaton Henson, Brendan Donnelly, Bryan Ray Turcotte, Pete & Jo, Cali Dewitt, Dan Monick, Demon Babies, Hannah Stouffer, Jfish/Khmara, Josh Slater, Matt W. Moore, Porous Walker, Scott Barry, and Sumi Ink Club.

Blood Is The New Black is back again bringing the best of contemporary art and serving it up for you on a soft comfy t-shirt. For Spring/Summer ‘09, Blood Is The New Black continues its work with Brian Lichtenberg. In addition to the stellar styles from last season, the RIP YSL is available in two new colorways and two new graphics were added. One, a model with pearls and the second, an instant M.I.S.S. favorite reads “I’m as serious as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer.” Now I can’t get the song out of my head!

Moore, Michael Sieben, Andrea Shear, Cali Dewitt, Dan Monick, Demonbabies, Dylan Haley, Hannah Stoufer, Josh Slater, Keren Richter, Kime Buzzelli, Mel Kadel, Patrick Jilbert, Porous Walker, Steve Green and Travis Millard. Mitra Khayyam, founder and creative director of Blood Is The New Black, always does a wonderful job of curating the art and producing a collection of tees that are fun and hip. Mitra Khayyam (above with artist Patrick Jilbert), owner of Blood is the New Black, always wanted to be an artist but unfortunately she never really had the skill, even so much as to draw a straight line. Well aware of her limitations, she chose to delve into the fashion industry, focusing on the business end versus the creative.

After several years of working in “the industry”, she went from being told she’d “never work in this town again” by one of the most prominent fashion photographers to being named one of V Magazine’s “Seventeen Most Industrious” in NYC. In 2004, Mitra finally decided to launch Blood is the New Black based on her thesis written a few years earlier. Her intention is use the company to open up talented artists to wider audiences and to allow their art to become available to many in this wearable form.
