M.I.S.S. Gold Star: Randi!

M.I.S.S. Gold Star: Randi!

Congrats Randi! The Editors at M.I.S.S. appreciate everything you do and we think you deserve some shine!

Name: Randi Hernandez
Astrological Sign: Pisces
Hometown: Ithaca, N.Y.
Location: Staten Island, N.Y. (SHAOLIN!!!)

M.I.S.S. Department: Assistant Music Editor
Favorite M.I.S.S. Column/s: Funky Expeditions, Six Degrees of Sampling, Reminisce with M.I.S.S., We Got the Beat

M.I.S.S. Gold Star: Randi!

We see you Assistant Music Editor!

Born and raised in Ithaca, NY, Randi moved to NYC in 2005…. but Ithaca will always be home to her in her heart. She went to Boston University as an undergrad and then got a Master’s Degree in Communications from Ithaca College in 2004. She considers herself the “Eternal Intern”, and hopes one day write a book about the organizational performance gaps she has encountered at the various companies for which she has worked. Recently named the Assistant Music Editor at M.I.S.S., she is unhealthily obsessed with “doing research” and learning about music. She has worked at Sony, Music Choice, and wrote one article for Missbehave before its unfortunate demise. :( She feels extremely conflicted about illegally downloaded music, and hopes to have a hand in helping to save the music industry (But not necessarily the labels – ‘cause record companies can be SHADY). She loves Quentin Tarantino (albeit not as an actor) and www.astrologyzone.com; Susan Miller is the truth.

M.I.S.S. Gold Star: Randi!

That's our Randi!

Women Making History: Brooke Nipar

Women Making History: Brooke Nipar

Women Making History: Brooke Nipar

Samantha, Sally, Mary & Brooke.

If you’ve come across those four names in recent years, you know that combined they form the Voltron that was the founding editorial staff at one of the most worship-worthy magazines to ever exist—MissBehave.

Although, Brooke Nipar was the last to be added to the original group of editors, her job was just as important! Being the Photo Director/Editor of MissBehave required Brooke to handle all things photo based. She researched and hired all the photographers and then edit and chose all of the images that went into each issue. The special chemistry she had with the rest of the staff translated into every issue and the readers responded, falling head-over-heels, not only with the mag but with the ladies behind it.

Today, we feature Brooke, the gone-but-not-forgotten magazine’s former photo editor and a successful freelance photographer in her own right, as a woman making history.

Check the official bio:

After spending 23 sun-soaked years in the valleys and on the beaches of southern California, Brooke Nipar broke for New York City. Reared at the hands of rock n’ roll parents, she brought with her a unique vision. Years of listening to her forebears’ records, crashing punk shows and fleeing to remote desert raves have forged a singular energy and anyone who’s lucky enough to have met her can attest to it. Now transformed into a city girl, Brooke likes to spend free time from photo projects on the elusive hunt for an authentic L.A.-style burrito in New York and dancing with anyone bold enough to try and keep up.

Let’s get into some Q&A with Brooke Nipar…Ready? Let’s go!

M.I.S.S.: What woman, besides your mom or grandmother, do you find inspirational?

There are so many women I could mention here… One woman that always stands out as creatively inspirational is Bjork. She’s always evolving and pushing the boundaries. She’s strong, innovative and does whatever she wants.

M.I.S.S.: How did you get your start?

I started taking photos when I was in high school. My grandfather was a photographer, and when he passed away he left me his 35mm camera. I began taking black and white lab classes, and by the time I was out of high school I knew I wanted to study photography further. I went to Art Center College of Design, got my BFA and moved to NYC to start my career as a photographer ten days after graduation.

When I moved to NYC, I literally cold called photo editors and art buyers and begged them to take a look at my book. I cringe when I think back to the portfolio I used to show then, but you gotta start somewhere! The first person to give me an assignment was Jennifer Miller at Jane Magazine. I continued to shoot for Jane until the magazine folded in 2007.

M.I.S.S.: What’s your favorite photograph that you’ve taken?

This is honestly an impossible question for me to answer. My favorite photos ever taken are definitely not my own.

M.I.S.S.: Who do you want to work with and/or photograph?

I really want to work with Karen O. I’ve been dying to shoot her for years. I’m a huge fan and I think she’s got such awesome style. I keep putting it out there in the universe, so hopefully it will happen one day!

M.I.S.S.: What part of photography is the most challenging and do you dislike the most?

The most challenging moments of being a photographer are the times when I have to make something out of nothing. This happens way more than most people realize. For example, there are times when you get hired to shoot a portrait and you have 5 minutes to make it happen and the location is terrible. That’s the toughest cause you still have to go back to the photo editor with a dynamic image, even though all of the elements aren’t perfect.

M.I.S.S.: Any advice for ladies who are just starting out in a career path similar to yours?

Define your style, be persistent and don’t get discouraged.

I would also remind them that becoming a successful photographer is much more than just taking good photos.

Thanks so much, Brooke!

Erin Magee

Prolific females fill a void when deemed necessary and a revolutionary movement is born. Enter breakout clothing designer Erin Magee, a New York City transplant who left Toronto, Canada at 18 to do just that with the creation of her feminine streetwear label, MadeMe.

Combining an array of edgy garments with the iconic sass of Madonna, Erin serves the glam and gritty feminine set with a collection that is not limited to graphic tees, acid wash denims, hooded leather jackets and geometric leggings. The streetwear aficionado earned her designing credentials while at Umbro, heading up special collaborations with Kim Jones and Supreme.

Her eye for quality and innovation led to the current position she holds as Production Manager for Supreme, a brand focused on epitomizing the skate culture of downtown NYC. In 2007, Erin broke the mold to satisfy women looking for street-inspired garments with a feminine touch by forming the MadeMe label.

In 2009, the MadeMe label is stocked in over 35 stores throughout the world including cities like New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Sydney and Los Angeles. With four collections in tow, features in magazines such as Complex, Missbehave, GIANT, New York Post and NYLON, and attention garnered from female recording artists like Alicia Keys, there’s no need to scour the Internet and fashion stores for a reputable brand that embraces sexiness and edge; Erin Magee has the answer.

Women Making History: Kerin Rose of A-Morir

A-Morir is a one-of-a-kind accessory line created by a lady who’s as unique as her poducts: Ms. Kerin Rose. For having a relatively young brand, word of this lovely and ecclectic soul is spreading fast. From the NY Post to MTV’s “The City” people are taking note.

The lady we honor today, as a Woman Making History, introduces herself below:

Hola. I’m Kerin Rose, owner/designer of A-morir. The accessory line, consisting of Swarovski encrusted glasses, headpieces and necklaces, has been around since the middle of this past October [2008]. I’ve been featured in Missbehave / Missbehavemag.com, Highsnobette.com, NY Post, NY Observer, AOL’s Stylelist blog, fashionweekdaily.com, the Urban Outfitters blog, I’m repped on MTV’s “The City” by the lovely Erin Lucas, and my Bizet frames were just in Jazmine Sullivan’s “Dream Big” video for 5 seconds… which is 5 seconds more than before!!

In addition to A-morir, I am the girl “Friday”/clothing designer for The Savant Guard, an incredible Brooklyn based record label. I have recently become a blogger for San Francisco’s Fatlace AND! I am also training for my first half marathon in 10 years with the Chrons and Colitis Foundation of America while my sister and I work on developing our 501c3 non-profit called We Love Your Guts. Please go to www.weloveyourguts.org to see what we’re about and help me in my fundraising efforts!

Kerin has a lot of amazing things going on and she’s more than deserving of the shine! We’ve got more on this crafty lady, after the jump!

M.I.S.S. Cargo NYC: Good Wood NYC

Had a chance to catch up with Kerri O’Connell, the lady behind Good Wood NYC. I’ve loved the contrast of the natural wood meets urban jewelry since I first saw Good Wood’s jewels. In the coming months you can expect collaborative pieces dropping with the Source, and Lo-Life to name a few. You might remember the TooFly rings we reported on last year and of course Good Wood has gotten down with one of our fav’s, MissBehave magazine. O’Connell and her wood carving elves can carve up any custom item you need and if you can’t quit afford a real diamond, Good Wood’s got you. PLEASE stay posted for a “next level” piece she’s about to drop. When I saw the prototype I said to myself…”it’s about damn time someone did that”.

Dee & Ricky + No Mas = Starter Jacket Bags!

Last week at the MOB x Missbehave party, I had the pleasure of meeting Dee & Ricky, the two most adorable boys in NYC.  Not only are they cute, but they have fun-loving style.  You’ve probably seen their heart lego brooches and belt buckles.  Their newest project is a collaboration with No Mas, a street wear brand that is inspired by all things sport, and features duffle bags made out of vintage Starter jackets.  The bags are amazing and really make full use of all of the jackets features including ribbing, pockets, patches, snaps and collar.  I think the bags are very clever and are a welcome addition to the lego empire Dee & Ricky have built.  I know there are some vintage purists who are sad to see the vintage jackets manipulated, but for a girl who has a hard time finding vintage Starters in her size, this is a great way to rock it as part of your ensemble without looking like you’re wearing your big brothers clothes.  I love these bags!  No word yet on when they drop but we’ll keep you posted as soon as we know.  Check out more photos after the jump . . .
