Juxtapoz Dark Arts is all about an art form that aims to be unsettling and has its roots in the 20th Century. Some people make a connection between dark art and gothic subculture, others simply associate it with the metaphysical, the disturbing or the nightmarish. However you perceive it, this art form is now part of mainstream culture and is becoming ever more popular. It can be found in all sorts of media including advertising, television, and film. This collection of works compiled by Juxtapoz features today’s most talented dark artists, all of whom create a certain mood or emotion in their work that is uniquely theirs. Some are especially lush in detail and color such as those by Wendy Cogan-Toyoda; others more minimalist such as Irana Douer’s hidden treasure nudes. Artists featured include Cleon Peterson, Richard Colman, Seonna Hong, Marci Washington, Caroline Hwang, Alex Pardee, Suzanne Sattler and more.
I really love and I mean LOOOOOOOVE Polly Morgan and Elizabeth McGrath. I’ve been following them for quite sometime.

If you have not heard TooFly is on fire. I feel like almost every Art Radar I’m writing about her! Well, yeah, she is apart of the M.I.S.S. Crew and all, but she is getting mad press! (:  Below is an interview with Juxtapoz magazine:

“I don’t mean to scare you,” I said to her, “but you’re going to be a star; a SuperStar.” Bold words from the infamous Ricky Powell said to NYC based artist TooFly (Juxtapoz #109). If her feature in our current February 2010 issue isn’t enough for you, take a look at the personal side of miss TooFly in our Back Talk feature.

Today, I feel:
Cold. It’s freezing in NY. I don’t like the cold weather it makes everything around me feel stagnant. Sometimes it’s good because I finally get some peace, but I really, really miss the sunshine!!

If you had three wishes, what would they be?

1. To live in harmony with nature.
2. Peace.
3. An honest government who cares for people, and quality of life for all.

Do you consider yourself a funny person?
I don’t mean to be, but my friends think I’m pretty silly when I say things sometimes that come out all wrong.

If you had one magic power, what would it be?

To FLY. That way I can reach high spots to paint, and flow freely towards natural landscapes when I need to escape the daily city grind.

Something that makes you happy?
I get happy when others are happy. It’s pretty contagious when we can all get down for it.

Something that makes you mad?
Ignorance.

What was your favorite subject in elementary school?
Art. I used to get excused from class to paint the auditorium walls in school! That was fun.

If you feel a creative block, what do you do to jumpstart inspiration?
I research. I go into my files of inspiration and gather ideas to get my thoughts to flow more easily.

When someone is taking a photo, do you smile for the camera or turn your head?
I crack a smile : )

Are you a social network enthusiast?
Yup. I dig it. I like to share. I keep up with most of my networking sites when I have some down time. It’s another world where folks on an international level can get info on my exhibits, new product releases, and inside scoop. Most are public but some are not. I like to keep it positive. If your negative and have nothing better to do with your life, I will block you.

What is a quality you don’t like about yourself?

I get shy sometimes, and I hate it.

Last good book you read?

The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying.

Who has had the most impact on your life?
My Mom. She’s DOPE! For all the great values she instilled in me that have transferred into everything I do. The choices I make, the people I surround myself with, and the things I enjoy doing. She’s given me great life gifts.

Are you spiritual?
Yea. I dig the universal wayz, and cause and effect laws of life. As long as you do things with good intentions that love will spread to give you, others, and the world around you many blessings.

One word to describe your artwork?
Fluid.

What’s missing in your life?
Not much, maybe some kids.

Are you a pet person?
Yea. Only dogs though. Not much of a cat person or any other little creature…

Is your artwork understood?
Someone actually made it very clear to me today that it is ; )

The most trouble you’ve ever gotten into:
Stealing a lipstick from Woolsworth when I was 15.

Where do you imagine yourself in five years?
In my first home, digging the ground to make a garden, and helping my grandpa build a shack outside for a creative art & design room.

Miss Van X Anaoana

mva03

I know! Jaw dropping. I’ve never reached for my wallet so fast. Well, this and the time that I got pulled over for going 92 in a 60.  Anyway, how exciting is this? Toulouse native Miss Van , who’s recognizable style and technique is saluted around the globe, she has teamed up with designer Anaoana (who opened Glint Shop) for a very exciting and very close to a sold out collaboration. An amazement of t-shirts, leggings, totes, scarves and more….yeah! Check it out!

mva01

The apparel and accessories showcase none other than Miss Van’s iconic girl with the red cheeks.  You know, the Poupées,  the ones full of color, eroticism, voluptuousness and ambiguity.  They’ve moved from the streets and onto wearable art. While the price points are a little hefty after the holidays, we all know that these collector pieces cannot be lived without. Don’t wait ladies and gents.  Step right up and buy!

Purchases can be made at: www.glintshop.com

Finally, Bebe is cool again (I used to love Bebe to bits when I was in high school).  Look at her! She is so hot, I’m not sure if it’s the apparel or the mock tattoos. Probably the latter, since Mike Giant hand did them himself. Here’s something that was brought to our attention that had us wide eyed with oohs and aahs. Posted by Joshy D. of Rebel8 (which is Joshy D. x Mike Giant) .

I posted a sneak peek of what Mike Giant is hooking me up with for my new house via Twitter. Here is the final and full version. It was cut down slightly from the original, huge bus shelter poster size, but it’s still large and the best damn bebe ad ever. Thanks Mike! You da best.

And he is right, this is the best Bebe ad ever.

Fafi's Mural in Mexico - The aftermath
Fafi’s Mural in Mexico – The aftermath

With the recent fiasco involving Robbo and Banksy we thought that was enough already, well a favorite Parisian graff artist of mine (and probably yours) had recently had the same done to her. Fafi’s mural in Mexico was violated as well. Here’s what Fafi had to say:

As far as I am concerned I like to think people can play with my stuff in the street, If I wouldn’t want my paintings to be covered by others or even played with, I would stay in my studio and paint for myself, it’s just that sometimes it’s better done than others, isn’t it ?

If you really wanna play with the Fafinettes, you’d better be either witty or talented.  This mural is was in Mexico DF.

I still can only come up with two words when I think of the works of Lee Renninger: wonderful and intricate.  Here is Renninger’s statement:

For the past several years, I have been exploring clay as fabric. Ceramic material is inherently dense and inflexible—qualities that have historically recommended it for utility. The transformation of this material into works that are soft and fluid as well as visually weightless, is only one way of challenging the long standing beliefs about clay as an artistic medium. Questions remain about the possibilities of the material—how it might be used and in what ways it can speak of our time.    – Lee Renninger

Much of my work has evolved from a fascination with repeated patterns and multiple objects. It is primarily clay based but often incorporates other media in an installation format. While clay is most often associated with fine craft and functional objects, I use it conceptually—stretching the boundaries of the material in an effort to challenge the accepted ideas of how clay should be used.

Please join Timezone Gallery on January 8th from 5 to 9 pm at 717 Leavenworth St between Post and Sutter for our first opening reception and solo exhibition featuring the work of Elizabeth Amento.

Her eye catching gouache drawings and fluffy interactive sculpture of pop craft will be a definite visual stimulant. As part of our new philosophy, here at Timezone Gallery we are committed to highlighting emerging artist’s who’s work is as fun to look at as it is well made.

To understand the work of Elizabeth Amento one must take Jackson Pollack, Kara Walker, and Cecily Brown, smash their works together, delicately though and on small 8 by 8 inch pieces of white archival paper. Then take Claes Oldenburg and Jeff Koons fuck up their work so you cant tell what it is anymore, and you will have similarly looking but larger then life fluffy interactive installations. Get some curious gallery goers and have them crawl under them, around them and lie down and relax inside them.

She is a new San Francisco based artist who got her edge-a-mo-vacation or MFA at the School of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Who has recently relocated back to SF and will be having this, her first Solo show in the place where she grew up. After you view the show and play with the art you can hang out and party in our back yard to celebrate our first opening featuring a fantastic new artist Elizabeth Amento.

“Urban Confluence” opens at C.A.V.E. Gallery Saturday January 9th. The show features a talented group of art renegades, whose dynamic compositions are inspired by the surrounding urban environment – the density of buildings, the serendipitous interaction of city dwellers, and the hope that elements of nature will find their way into our urban daily lives.

The exhibition will showcase an interesting diversity of cutting edge works, including paintings, mixed media collages, pen and ink, and unique hand-sprayed stencils.

Participating artists are: Codak, Craig “Skibs” Barker, Daryll Peirce, Eatcho, Euth, Gosha Levochkin, Greg Boudreau, Han Haveron, Liz Brizzi, Michelle Dubin, Nate Seubert, Renee Lawter, Patrick Haemmerlein, and Zoso.

1AM SF is not only an art gallery celebrating urban and street art but also an establishment committed to conveying the positive aspects of this misunderstood form of art. The classes are aimed to give an outlet for people to express themselves creatively and raise awareness to the urban arts. The four classes offered at 1AM are Stencil, Art of Graffiti “Sketching Letters”, Toy Modification, and the Letter Style and Mural Production. We give students first hand experience in the world of street and urban art by teaching them the history, culture, art styles of graffiti and having them paint a mural on one of the busiest streets of San Francisco. 1AM, short for First Amendment, encourages people to freely share their thoughts and ideas through the medium of art in a responsible and innovative way.

Roman, heralded as one of the most positive people they have ever met, teaches the Stencil classes at 1AM SF. He teaches students to create stencils that can be applied to any surface, whether it be on shoes, an old shirt, a hat or just plain old paper. The class starts with logo development and ends with each student creating his or her very own stencil. All art supplies needed for creating the personalized stencil are provided by 1AM. Class is offered every month.

-Each class consists of two sessions
-The class is $50/person
-Ages 18+ welcome.

Ever Gold Gallery Presents "Von Doom" Curated by Alex Braubach October 1, 2009 through October 31, 2009

Ever Gold Gallery Presents "Von Doom" Curated by Alex Braubach October 1, 2009 through October 31, 2009

Von Doomis a celebration of dark, heavy-metal inspired art with a focus on image-makers of the current metal scene. It will be on display for the entire month of October and will feature a variety of artists hailing from places as far away as the U.K. and Australia. Just in time for Halloween, the exhibit will also focus on drawings and prints in various degrees of brutality, un-holiness and gore! Oh My! Inspired by San Francisco’s own “Hell-O-Ween” Black Metal festival, this show is an ode to the music that spawns cross-eyed goat heads, summons the apocalypse, and paints itself in corps paint. Nothing is sacred – all is doom.

Wood Pins by Miss Van

Wood Pins by Miss Van

Wood Pins by Miss Van

Last month, Miss Van had a solo show, Still a Little Magic, at FIFTY24SF Gallery in San Francisco, that featured her poupees under the big top tents of the circus world.  She’s taken some of her characters from the show and created a wooden pin set.   The pins feature artwork by Miss Van printed onto wood and is a collaborative work of artistic jewelry exclusively hand crafted and produced by Princesas Market and the Limbo Family. Each of the two models is produced in a limited edition of 40 pieces, is signed and comes in a handmade and engraved leather purse with a numbered certificate of authenticity.  If you weren’t able to see the show (which was amazing) you can adorn yourself with a little piece of Miss Van love.  You can buy the pins here.  Read the full story to see the rest of the pictures.

TONIGHT: Miss Van & Jeremy Fish at FIFTY24SF Gallery

Painting by Miss Van

Tonight is an exciting night for art lovers in San Francisco because we have two great openings at FIFTY24SF Gallery – Miss Van and Jeremy Fish.  Many of you know Miss Van and her infamous globe-trotting “poupees” with their iconic doe eyes, pouty lips and taunting gazes.  With each show, Miss Van places her poupees in different settings and this show is no different.  “Still a Little Magic,” Miss Van’s newest undertaking, takes us under the bit top tents into the world of masks and charade.  Miss Van is showing at the downstairs gallery of FIFTY24SF.

Jeremy Fish’s show, “Ghosts of the Barbary Coast,” takes us on a visual history of San Francisco.  Using the adventurers who chased their dreams to San Francisco during the California Gold Rush as an inspiration, Jeremy Fish weaves a tale of mischief and mayhem through 35 new pieces including paintings, illustrations and woodworking projects from Indonesia.  Jeremy Fish is showing at the upstairs gallery of FIFTY24SF.  Also, check out these great video interviews Jeremy did:  A studio tour/interview with Fecal Face (view after the jump) and a cooking session with celebrity Chef Chris Cosentino.

Miss Van and Jeremy Fish are two of my favorite artists and I can’t wait to see these shows tonight!  See you there!

“Brujerias” by Miss Van – New Prints & Postcards Available

“Brujerias” is “witchcraft” in Spanish, and that is the starting point for Miss Van’s most recent pieces that she showed in Berlin.  Her fine art pieces may be out of reach for some of us, but luckily, we can buy into the bewitching beauty of Miss Van’s art by purchasing prints or postcards that are now available on her fine art webstore, Princesas Market.  The postcard set includes 5 different postcards from the “Brujerias” series and is limited to a production of 500 sets.  Miss Van also produced giclee prints entitled: Brujerias 1, 2 and 3.  The prints are numbered and signed and limited to sets of 75 each.  I want everything that Miss Van makes, but as I’m not made out of money, at least I can have a little piece by collecting all the postcard sets . . . there are more online.  Pictures of the prints after the jump . . . .

MISS VAN @ FIFTY24SF Gallery this December!

The Upper Playground blog is informing us that this December, the one and only Miss Van—who has become synonymous with fine graffiti art—will be exhibiting at ground level space at the FIFTY24SF Gallery in San Francisco, coinciding yet separate from Jeremy Fish’s upstairs show at FIFTY24SF.

Um, Jeremy Fish and Miss Van on the same bill?! Bananas…Apples and Bananas…I cannot wait.

We’ll post more details on the opening and exhibition dates when they become available but I really  just wanted to put this out there now cause I know a lot of you will want to travel up to SF for this.

Need your Miss Van fix, like now?! Visit NOTCOT’s online gallery of Miss Van’s simply breathtaking Princesas at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery from March 2007.
