M.I.S.S. POOL TRADESHOW: Quay Eyewear

quay_2

We’re all about fun in the sun here in Australia, so it’s only natural we’ve got wardrobes to match! Melbourne sunnies label Quay Eyewear has been kicking it Down Under for more than eight years and finally made its way across the Pacific to the US during the last 12 months.

The brainchild of Allen and Linda Hammond (the team behind Bleeker St), the range consists of everyday eyewear, classic styles, retro/vintage themes, and has the highest UV rating to protect your little peepers. Think oversized frames, heart-shaped frames, animal print, stripes, bling, tortoiseshell, neon – it’s all there, and retailing for around $60US and under, it’s kind of a steal, nah mean?

Get your hands on a pair at Fred Segal, Oak, Metropark, and Intuition.

World's Greatest Sneaker Swap Meet

World's Greatest Sneaker Swapmeet

Sneaker Freaker has held some banging sneaker swapmeets in the past, but with The World’s Greatest Swapmeet they’re taking it up another level. People that like sneakers tend to like other fun stuff, like streetwear, bikes, skate boards and music, so why not invite them to the party, too? With areas set up, both inside and out, there’s nothing the famous Melbourne weather can do to ruin the party. Lock in the date!

WORLD’S GREATEST SWAP MEET
Sunday May 31, 11am-5pm
Rose Street Market
60 Rose St, Fitzroy

Acclaim Magazine launches online

Acclaim Magazine launches online

You know what makes me sad? When I finish reading the radness that is Acclaim Magazine and realise it’s a cold and lonely three months till the next issue hits the stands. Lucky for sad people like me, Acclaim finally has an online presence to fill the void!

For those of you outside our fine country, Acclaim is Australia’s premier street lifestyle mag that has got all your bases covered – fashion, kicks, art, music, shopping guides, auto, tattoos, film – pretty much anything fun! And I should point out that in what is an often male-dominated arena, one of the head honchos of the mag is one talented lady by the name of Alex Weiland.

With contributors (both guys and girls) from all over the globe from each and every discipline, there’s sure to be stacks of content to suit all your needs. We’re talking exclusive web-only content and extended features and interviews they couldn’t cram into the mag, as well as the blog that seems to be getting update every five seconds. Ok, maybe that’s any exaggeration but they’re updating on the regular.

So as the title says, bookmark it now, add the blog to your RSS feed and let the fun begin.

Melbourne: Simply Bread Series 2 (Designer Street Fashion Series)

Fat Kids presents Simply Bread Series

Fat Kids presents Simply Bread Series

Melbourne readers wake up! We know you’re broke after the Easter long weekend, but surely you can scrape together the clams to hit the second event in Fat Kids Simply Bread Series this Friday. For the uneducated, Simply Bread is a 12 month project celebrating street culture – bringing together fashion, music, toys, art, and design and putting it into one big party.

Our aim is to help celebrate the guerrilla lifestyle we love and ultimately become the hub of inspiration and assistance for all brands, creators, toys, and collectors.

Simply Bread Series 2 – The Designer Street Fashion Series – recognises how streetwear has become a big influence on youth today and is here to help celebrate its originality and influence. The event features Lafayette (Japan), Orisue (California), Estate (LA) and Garbege (NY).

There is a pile of giveaways, and everyone likes free stuff right? If you didn’t pre-purchase you’ve sadly missed out on the chance to win a pair of Supra NS Skytops or a Converse Black and Gold pack. But dry your eyes, there’s plenty more – if you feel like getting in early and are in the first 20 through the door you’ll get a gift pack courtesy of Fat Kids worth up to $700. Win the freshest t-shirt comp and you’ll take home a $1000 prize pack (yes, that’s ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH), plus giveaways from Madman DVD, Lafayette, Orisue, Estate, and Trainer.

To top it off, tunes provided by B.Two, A-Style and MISS fave MAFIA.

Event deets: SIMPLY BREAD SERIES 2 (DESIGNER STREET FASHION SERIES)
Time: 10.30pm till late
Venue: Roxanne Parlour Level 3, 2 Coverlid Place, 3000 Melbourne
Tickets: pre-sale ONLY $12 / DOOR $15

If you still need some convincing (shame on you!), take a look at flicks from the first event here.

Women Making History: M.A.F.I.A of Sneaker Freaker

Maria Limberis aka M.A.F.I.A. has been involved in Hip Hop culture for over 25 years. For over 10 of those years, she’s been spinning a diverse selection of music ranging from ‘90s Hip Hop and Electro to Baltimore and Hyphy. Along side spinning, Mafia hosts, and runs her own nights, making her deserving of the title “Australia’s Hardest Working Lady DJ!? as well as, Melbourne’s “go-to? DJ to get the party started! Aside from hosting, Mafia has been on-stage support for Dizzie Rascal, Cool Kids, Girl Talk, CSS, and A-Trak, just to name a few.

Mafia is the only female to work for Sneaker Freaker Magazine and brings her own flare to the magazine and site which includes doing all the New Release sneaker reviews, interviewing anyone and everyone making waves in street culture, updating the website daily with Newsflashes and bringing new brands and people who are on the come up to worldwide recognition with interviews, reviews and stories on everything encompassing sneaker culture.

Mafia does anything and everything at SNKFRKR HQ to make sure the best sneaker magazine in the world stays at the top of the cultures go-to site and magazine for only the best in sneakers and fashion. She takes aNYthing’s motto of “Never Not Working” into account, and is online at least 14 hours a day, hustling, researching and immersing herself in a culture she has grown up on.

Mafia’s got a few videos to share after the jump, including one where she gives a breakdown of sneaker head terms. We also re-link you to a free Mafia mix we posted about a few weeks back. Jump!
