International Dance Day

Here at M.I.S.S., we love to shake our bootys, so in honor of International Dance Day we’re showing you some of our favorite dances EVA. Much love goes out to Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, Ballet companies worldwide, Gregory Hines, Bob Fosse, and Fred & Ginger. And, we can’t forget some of the ground breaking music videos that created dance crazes like Madonna’s Vogue, Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation, Kid ‘n Play’s House Party Dance-Off, MC Hammer’s U Can’t Touch This, the Macarena and Digital Underground’s The Humpty Dance.  Oh, one more, I had to add the best dance scene from a movie ever made - the last scene of Girls Just Want To Have Fun (SJP waaaay before SATC)! Comment and let us know what your favorite dance / dance music video is!!

Can’t Touch This! Get Your Dance On

I just heard about the next big thing in the online-video-competition revolution via text:

Ali: Dancejam.com

Me: ?

Ali: MC Hammer site

That’s all it took and I was online looking at people’s homemade dance videos, profiles and battles. It’s Myspace meets Youtube meets American’s Funniest Home Videos meets dance. I could easily get sucked in and watch all day so I removed myself from the site immediately. I’ll leave you with this so you can get a taste:

He’s actually pretty good! I think my favorite part though is that his moms or g’moms is sitting in the back mending and doesn’t look up once!!

M.I.S.S. 2008 CALENDAR!

M.I.S.S. 2008 Calendar
At M.I.S.S., we love getting nails did and sneaks so we put them together to present M.I.S.S. 2008 - a calendar featuring a “playmate” of the month. Each month we’ll feature ladies’ kicks that we heart along with a killer matching manicure. For January, we present M.I.S.S. January 2008 - British Knights Black Orchid.

M.I.S.S. January 2008 - British Knights Black Orchid
Started in 1980 by the Jack Schwartz Inc in New York, BK or British Knights was started as a “fashionable alternative to the major ‘performance’ sportswear brands.” BK positioned it’s self as an “inner city and music driven brand, appealing to the predominantly streetwise young male.” In the early 90’s BK sponsored MC Hammer. They where the first company to make a commercial, which was broadcast on MTV.. Their marketing campaigns included “Get off on the right foot -Get off on BK’s (1990); “U Can’t Touch This” By MC Hammer (1991) and “Choose Change” (1992). It was shortly after, in the early 90’s, that an urban myth claiming that the Crips street gangs rocked the shoes claiming that the BK stood for “Blood Killers”, their rival gang, that started the downfall of the brand. These rumors apparently contributed to the decline in the popularity of the shoe due to the brand being banned at schools and universities. British Knights never recovered from this fall. Today they stand apart of streetwear history and continue to provide nostalgia and design inspiration.
