Amanda Lopez Retratos de La Familia
If you’re in the East Bay Area this weekend, make sure to stop by Berkeley’s Pueblo Nuevo gallery for Retratos de La Familia, a show featuring the photography of Amanda Lopez. You may recall her shoot for Mama Clothing’s Winter 2008 collection. If not, check out some pics from that shoot here. In addition to featuring some photos from that collaboration, Lopez has work from her portrait series Mi Familia. Shot in black and white, the portraits have a sort of sweet poignancy. Particularly striking are the diptychs. Combining a close-up with a full body shot, each subject’s gaze initially draws you in and then the details surrounding them blend to create the portrait in the accompanying photograph. Gorgeous! Check it out this Friday, May 8 starting at 6 pm and going late! The show runs through May 30.

Female Sneaker Fiend noticed that Michelle Obama was quite the fashion maven and asked some industry ladies what kind of sneakers they thought Michelle Obama would wear in various situations. “Experts” included female sneaker fiends Claw Money, Mama of Mama Clothing/M.I.S.S., Samia Grand-Pierre from Highsnobette.com, Lori Lobenstine, Precious Colon and Janine Simon. Check out the full article here to see what our First Lady would wear while working out, on a date, to run errands, and to spend time with the family.

I had the recent pleasure of getting together with Mama and her “locas” to shoot the lookbook for her Holiday collection. Taking it back to a theme she visited in the early days of Mama, her collection entitled “Mi Vida Loca” takes inspiration from classic, west coast Americana style of the lives of L.A. Chola’s depicted in the movie “Mi Vida Loca”. The collection takes us from the Zoot Suit Riots of the 1940’s, to the low rider culture of today. I always love the research Gabriella puts into her collections. Paying close attention to detail in making sure her collections are true to the theme that inspires her. From the silhouettes of her pieces (can you say Derbay jacket!) to the artists she worked with, Gabriella never disappoints in taking you on a journey and telling a story as if she lived it herself. These are all qualities that come out in her collection every season and I look forward to whats to come! It’s always a pleasure to be the stylist to this star. Welcome to the West Siiiiiiiide!

I’m a pretty casual girl, I like to be comfy, especially on the weekends. San Francisco weather is pretty mellow and a t-shirt and hoodie will serve you well through most of the year. On Sunday, I had to run some errands so I threw this together.

For the summer 2008 collection Mama takes you back to the Roaring 20’s when smoke-filled speakeasys and jazz clubs were the place to get a cocktail during Prohibition.  A time when flappers were chopping their hair into bobs and hiking their skirts up and showing their ankles – so scandalous! Mama celebrates this exciting period and gives it a contemporary twist.  The Mama’s Joint Look Book is laid out like a silent film and was shot at Milk Bar in San Francisco to give it that “secret spotâ€? feel. You can view the Look Book here.  Sit back, relax and turn the listen to all that jazz.Â
