Women Making History: Erin Magee of MadeMe

Prolific females fill a void when deemed necessary and a revolutionary movement is born. Enter breakout clothing designer Erin Magee, a New York City transplant who left Toronto, Canada at 18 to do just that with the creation of her feminine streetwear label, MadeMe.

Combining an array of edgy garments with the iconic sass of Madonna, Erin serves the glam and gritty feminine set with a collection that is not limited to graphic tees, acid wash denims, hooded leather jackets and geometric leggings. The streetwear aficionado earned her designing credentials while at Umbro, heading up special collaborations with Kim Jones and Supreme.

Her eye for quality and innovation led to the current position she holds as Production Manager for Supreme, a brand focused on epitomizing the skate culture of downtown NYC. In 2007, Erin broke the mold to satisfy women looking for street-inspired garments with a feminine touch by forming the MadeMe label.

In 2009, the MadeMe label is stocked in over 35 stores throughout the world including cities like New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Sydney and Los Angeles. Erin has shown her collections at Las Vegas’ Magic Tradeshow, Barcelona’s  Bread & Butter Tradeshow and “Ladies First”, an independent tradeshow in Tokyo, Japan.

With four collections in tow, features in magazines such as Complex, Missbehave, GIANT, New York Post and NYLON, and attention garnered from female recording artists like Alicia Keys, there’s no need to scour the Internet and fashion stores for a reputable brand that embraces sexiness and edge; Erin Magee has the answer.

If you’re not already familiar with Erin, you’re sleeping! But don’t worry we got you! ;) More after the jump!

M.I.S.S. Vegas Review: Darkhorse at MAGIC/SLATE

We’ve posted about Darkhorse for some time now, but I finally got to meet Andrew, the designer, last week at Slate.  Andrew has designed several solid collections but I can easily say that his was one of the best lines I saw last week.  He’s really bringing it for the ladies with really clever graphics, embellishments and leather jackets.  He’s brought back the beaded tees (yes!) and not only does it look (and sound) amazing, but it’s also a reference to Stevie Wonder and his braids - the shirt reads “Part Time Lover” - clever on so many levels!  He’s also got one of the best “designer” t-shirts I’ve seen - a tee with a caricature of John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Karl Lagerfeld (psssst Andrew, I NEED this shirt).  That’s not all he has for the ladies who know their labels.  There’s more Chanel and Louboutin references.  I’m also a sucker for tromp l’oeil and Darkhorse has a really cute “purse” graphic.  Last but not least, Darkhorse introduces some cut & sew pieces including a Paris hoodie complete with Eiffel Tower zipper pull and buttery soft leather jackets in candy colors and satin linings - I need one of those too.  Check out the craziness after the jump.

M.I.S.S. Vegas Review: CTRL at MAGIC/SLATE

We’ve been fans of CTRL for some time now so it was a pleasure to meet Freeman and Esa, the boys behind the brand, in person.  CTRL is based in Helsinki, Finland so the guys made a trek out to Vegas but it was really worth it.  First off, the collection was shown on wire hangers - which brought flashbacks of “Mommy Dearest” to mind.  When you see the same hangers on all the racks, it’s refreshing to see designers infuse their personality into the details.  On to the clothes . . . For Spring 2009, Freeman was inspired by international cities and their individuality.  Cities like Paris and Jakarta played a strong role as recent trips to those places were fresh in his mind.  The inspiration can be seen mainly in the graphics and patterned prints.  Some favorites included his double entendre Paris tee (Paris, France v. Paris, Texas) and stone washed fleece (so comfy!).  Check out more pictures from the Spring 2009 collection after the jump.

M.I.S.S. Vegas Review: Ten Deep at SLATE/MAGIC

Ten Deep is keeping the ladies in mind for holiday and spring with women’s tees that feature their iconic brass knuckle “problem solvers” in many different variations.  I love their neon brass knuckle sign (pictured below).  Check out the tees after the jump.

M.I.S.S. Vegas Review: Rocksmith at SLATE/MAGIC

Rock Smith is slowly adding women’s tees to their already stellar men’s street wear collection.  We especially liked the Warhol inspired Obama tee.  When we asked Erik, the designer, if he had trouble designing for women he had the best answer yet:  “No, I have 3 sisters.”  Haha.  Great answer!  Check out the rest of the pics after the jump.

M.I.S.S. Vegas Review: La Femme GNS at MAGIC/SLATE

The debut collection of La Femme GNS, the women’s sneaker line from Greedy Genius is dropping this fall and we are very excited about this (for a preview of the fall collection check out our Magic post from February). Digit, the designer of La Femme GNS, is doing an amazing job and really giving the ladies some new options for kicks. She’s got great style and seems to know what the ladies like on their feet. Pink is used only as an accent color - you won’t find any pink shoes here (thank goodness!). That’s not to say that the shoes aren’t feminine, they’re just not for 10 year old girls. She’s added some great details like studs and ruffles that make the La Femme GNS shoes stand apart from the rest. The shoes below all drop for Spring 2009 (except the Haze model). Check out more pics after the jump.

M.I.S.S. Vegas Review: Cream of the Crop at MAGIC/SLATE

One of my favorite ladies’ t-shirt lines is Cream of the Crop because not only are the graphics cute but the t-shirts are scented! They take me back to my sticker collecting days when I had pages and pages of scratch ‘n sniff stickers - only you can wear these scented lovelies. It was especially nice to meet the founder and designer of Cream, Mika Hatsushima. She’s added several new styles and new scents to the collection including a joint design with No Kiddin and an Andy Warhol inspired series. check out the pics after the jump.

M.I.S.S. Vegas Review: UNIF at MAGIC/SLATE

Based in LA and started 4 years ago, Eric Espinoza, “Man of Business”, started UNIF (”Ur Not In Fashion”) to help the stylishly challenged.  His quirky fun pieces are definitely not for the timid and have lots of personality.  He doesn’t shy away from color and his cuts are feminine and flattering.  Though he also has a men’s collection, the women’s pieces are all designed with just the ladies in mind.  The Holiday collection features plaid pieces in a purple, black and turquoise color palette.  The Spring Collection incorporates more colors and has lots of 80s accents like skirts with suspenders, paint splatters, and crop tops.  Check out sneak peaks of the UNIF women’s Holiday 2008 and Spring 2009 collections after the jump.

M.I.S.S. Vegas Review: King Stampede at MAGIC/SLATE

Holiday 2008 marked the first season that King Stampede showed an independent women’s collection. Many of the graphics were designed with the ladies in mind and unique to women’s tees. Other graphics were men’s graphics that were re-worked to fit onto women’s tees whether is was sizing of the graphic, placement of the graphic or using different application techniques. King Stampede also has a great lineup of “unisex” pieces including their matching wool hats and scarve and an umbrella! Check out the rest of the line after the jump.
