M.I.S.S. Playlist: Undercovers

M.I.S.S. Playlist: UnderCovers

Your Name: Leilanie
Name of the Playlist: Undercovers
Genre: various
Mood: none in particular
Playlist Inspiration: they say imitation is the highest form of flattery. As much as this can arguably be held true, I think repetition is a higher form of flattery. In this case, musicians re-creating covers of other artists.  Some people like to compare versions, but I personally just like taking them in for what they are and focusing on the lyrics and different arrangements the most.

M.I.S.S. Playlist: The Friend Mixtape

That's what friends are for!

That's what friends are for!

Name: Randi
Name of Playlist: The Friend Mixtape
Genre: pop/indie/wierd
Mood: Upbeat

Playlist Inspiration:
Nothing says “I Love You” like a homemade mixtape. True, they are often used as a courting device (a la Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist), but they are much more special (in my opinion) when made between girlfriends. They say so much about a friendship, particularly through choice of songs. Some songs say “We both love this artist”, some say “You SHOULD like this artist”, while others say “I have no idea why you like this artist but I am trying to make you happy with this mixtape”. In the case of the below mix, crafted by my dear friend Lindsey Sack, all of these types of songs made the cut. The mutual love: Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, suggested love: V.V. Brown, BlackRoc, and the “I don’t get you” love: Robyn. She threw me a bone with the Robyn, ’cause a while back when Robyn had a new album, she laughed in my face when I admitted I liked it. Thanks, friend!

M.I.S.S. Playlist: Chill Out

M.I.S.S. Playlist: Chill Out

M.I.S.S. Playlist: Chill Out

Name: Leilanie
Name of Playlist: Chill Out
Genre: Downbeat hip hop, Japanese downtempo, a bit of jazz, some soul
Mood: It’s for the late night marauders and drives to our St. Elsewheres. Also pairs well with a glass of fine wine and fine company.

Playlist Inspiration: With it still being Dilla month, I’ve been more appreciative of the beats more than the voices. Already being a fan of Foreign Exchange, Nicolay, Jazzanova, Nujabes and  then rediscovering Chimp Beams’ “Menina” (thanks to M.I.S.S.’ very own Valerie), I just had to share the good vibes.

Tracklist:

2. Crustation – Purple (Ummah remix)
3. The Ins x Miles Bonny – J. Birly
4. Uyama Hiroto – Stratus
5. Smooth J – Kiss
6. FS Green – Preppy Lady
7. Suff Daddy – S.E.X. (experiment)
