Bad Bitches stand up! Brooklyn based Yours Truly Brand has just released a collaboration mix tape with the equally fierce DJ Harukasalt999 entitled Girl Gang Vol 1. This hour long tape gives you a seamless combination of hip hop, dubstep, electro, and, in their words, “all that wavy dope ish” – a feat not easily accomplished. With bits from the hottest acts in music right now – from Lykke Li, Dev and Diplo to guilty pleasures by Lil B and Lady – this mixtape will definitely have you cookin’ and serving some attitude on the side.
It would be hard to pinpoint the best part, but one standout in the compilation is the transition between Das Racist’s All Tan Everything (featuring Jay-Z) and Bass Head (King Fantastic Remix) by Bassnectar. With the saturation of some seriously bad dubstep in the clubs, DJ Harukasalt shows how to simultaneously merge hip hop and good dub, all while dropping a track the right way.
Whether you need a pick me up at work or some serious cruising music, these Brooklyn girls will not disappoint.

Nipping at the heels of their first release, The Weeknd (the ambiguous nom de is-it-a-band-or-just-one-person of 21 year-old Canadian R&B singer Abel Tesfay) has released their second mixtape: Thursday. For fans of the first album, this release is a fine extension of the spinning, spacious, drugged-out landscapery you fell in love with.
While The Weeknd pushes the boundaries of R&B into unrecognizable territories, there is still plenty here that classic R&B lovers can bite into. The mixtape’s title track sounds like an old-school slow jam on opiates. I actually paused the track midway to pull up 1999 between-the-sheets Silk ballad “Meeting In My Bedroom” to compare (and have no regrets).
The tape unveils many homages to R&B classics, at least to my mind. But I know I can’t be the only one to hear the end of “Lonely Star” - as the vocals count through the days of the week (careful to skip over Thursday, of course) – and think of 1985′s Cherrelle/Alexander O’Neal hit ”Saturday Love.” “The Zone” could have been a B-side on the newest Sade album, save for the prominent Drake cameo (his first and only on the album). It’s easy to get lost in the production of this album – a major strength of all of The Weeknd’s work thus far - but I still can’t help searching for those palpable, basic influences. Others have been pushing the sound of R&B for a minute (including fellow Torontonian Drake, whose support of The Weeknd has undoubtedly kicked the newcomer’s career up a few rungs); Tesfay carves out his niche in emotion and borderline-horror subjects and textures. At the end of “The Birds Part One,” when all is stripped down to vocals and guitar, you can feel the warmth and hear the bare bones of what has been built upon – and it does not fail to impress.
The Weeknd is scheduled to release a third mixtape, Echoes Of Silence, this fall.
Mad Decent is the Diplo-headed label home to Blaqstarr, Rusko, Dillon Francis and Major Lazer (if you count Major Lazer as its own entity, separate from Diplo and/or Switch… let’s all admit it’s just more fun to convince yourself that Skerrit Bwoy produces the whole thing).
The label’s first comprehensive mixtape, Mad Decent Volume 1, features 18 Diplo-picked-these-himself-you-guys! tracks that range from unreleased remixes to brand new Moombahton beats from an impressive array of artists on the label. This is definitely a summertime mix - jump on it before you’re back in cardigans and any kind of pants that are school/work-appropriate. It’s guaranteed this won’t sound as good without the top down.

DJ Mick Boogie has released Excursions, a mixtape featuring hip-hop innovators A Tribe Called Quest. The mixtape comes in a wave of what appears to be nothing less than a Tribe revival. Mick Boogie himself has said he was inspired to compile the mix after seeing Michael Rapaport’s new amazing/controversial documentary, Beats Rhymes & Life (amazing for fans, controversial if your name is Q-Tip [peep what he's had to say about it here]).
Says Boogie:
This is NOT a greatest hits mix. This mix is for the true Tribe fans only… the die-hards who know every lyric and remember every interlude. I thought it would be cool to basically create the “lost” Tribe album… with all the rare songs, demos, limited-edition remixes, and collaborations you may have missed over the years.
Excursions presents 27 tracks of familiar and not-so-familiar material that spans ATCQ’s entire 5-album career (and beyond). Mick B. doesn’t give you a tracklist (although we do, shh!), so I listened to it blind - much the way you might put in a new record and let it play without consulting the cover until it was over. The journey through time and production value, along with appearances from Busta Rhymes and J. Dilla, kept it interesting. Fans will love the nuances here, the remixes and live performance they may not have in their collections. Non-superfans and neophytes will definitely find themselves noddin’ their heads along and smiling, too. You really can’t go wrong with such great material.

M.I.S.S. In The Mix: Rocky Rivera’s “Girl Like Me” Video
Last week, heavy-hitting female emcee and M.I.S.S.’ very own editor-at-large Rocky Rivera gave fans a sneak peek of her highly anticipated music video for the track, “Girl Like Me” at the first installment of HLLYWD & WESTERN in California. While the video was not yet made public, I frequently checked her Facebook and Twitter pages just to be sure I didn’t miss out on its release. After patiently waiting, I’m happy to report that the video for “Girl Like Me” featuring Raka Dun of the Panamanian Hip-Hop/reggae duo, Los Rakas is finally here! Might I also add that Rocky Rivera never looked or sounded better in it! Read the full story
