M.I.S.S. Beauty Tip of the Week: Budget Friendly Summer Fragrances

Last week I featured some of my favorite luxury summer fragrances. This week, I wanted to feature budget friendly fragrances that I think are wonderful for the summer.

Tuberose maybe a challenge to wear for some – it’s a flower that announces its presence before the wearer enters a room. I personally love this flower but I know it could be a bit much for others. Enter Juicy Couture – yes, you read that correctly. It’s fruity and sweet – tuberose, lily, sugar, caramel, watermelon, passion fruit, green apple and mandarin orange. But it does settle with wood and patchouli. This can be found at Sephora, all other department stores that carry the fragrance line, as well as Juicy Couture boutiques. I have a soft spot for this fragrance – my husband placed my engagement ring on this bottle Christmas eve four years ago and I wore this daily when I was pregnant. I may not reach for it much but it is a nice and flirty fragrance perfect for warm date nights.

Sometimes, it may be too hot to spray any fragrance and that’s where scented body butter comes in. I LOVE The Body Shop’s Coconut Body Butter. Honestly, this is the most realistic smelling coconut on the market. It’s creamy and sweet and a bit woody – like a freshly cracked coconut. This scent also reminds me of my mom tanning with her Hawaiian Tropic oil while sipping Tab. Remember this was the late ’70s when SPF wasn’t even a thought. I pick this up in the travel size for summer at The Body Shop or Sephora.

I also love Pacifica’s Tuscan Blood Orange. I have used this as just hand lotion or after a shower at the gym. There’s a blend of strawberries, raspberries and, of course, blood orange. It is juicy, sweet and just a bit spicy. Other than using this on your hands while trapped at your desk, I see this worn beneath a sundress and wedge sandals. It’s effortless and just delicious. I find Pacifica’s lotions/fragrances at Sephora but you can also find them online and in some specialty grocery stores. I also pick this up in the smaller travel size for summer.

Jo Molone’s Nectarine Blossom and Honey is one of her most popular scents. This is my favorite scent from her collection. The scent gives you nectarines and peaches at first spray, then the honey comes in to keep it from getting too synthetically fruity sweet. This makes me think of dining outdoors in Wine Country or even hanging out with that one family member that you travel over an hour for to make that birthday or graduation party. The payback is being with family, eating bbq, hanging out by a pool and 90 degree weather inland. This scent will keep you cool. This comes in a small 30ml bottle for $55, which is a great size and price if you intend to wear this through spring and summer only.

The last scent is from the Guerlain Aqua Allegoria line – Mandarine Basilic. This is a gorgeous juicy citrus that has a zesty aromatic accent to it thanks to basil. I love making my own pesto and cooking with fresh basil. It is one of my favorite aromatics, next to rosemary. You feel instant energy with the mandarin orange, orange blossom, and basil – but it also mellows with notes of green tea, chamomile, amber and wood. This has “picnic” written all over it. Or a stroll through a Farmer’s Market or open mall. This is another scent that brings me instant happiness. This is the budget friendly collection for Guerlain – it retails for $59 for2.5 oz. It’s an eau de toilet so it may not last as long as an eau de parfum but I don’t mind because it is so lovely to smell.

These are just some ideas on how I try to invoke a sultry, summery vibe when I’m really freezing my butt in yoga pants and a hoodie in my living room in July. Green tea and roses are other great notes to create warmth in your mind. What scents do you rely on to project a summer mood or keep you cool through the blazing and balmy months?

M.I.S.S. Beauty Tip of the Week: Help, I Want Long Hair!

AW12 Catwalk

Lately, a lot of my female friends have been coming to me for advice on how to get their hair to grow faster. Fortunately, I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve gotten a terrible haircut, or bubblegum stuck in my hair and have needed to regrow my hair after getting a short cut. So, I looked to my sister who donates her hair to Locks of Love once a year or so. She doesn’t seem to have a problem when it comes to hair growth which she mainly attributes to a regular scalp treatment she uses every Sunday consisting of apple cider vinegar and mayonnaise. Sounds delicious! Believe it or not, the average woman only grows half an inch of hair every month, if she’s lucky. Now that long flowing hair is all the rage since appearing all over the AW12 catwalks, women are flocking to the nearest salons for hair extensions as well as monthly trims to promote hair growth.

I can’t recommend a product that will magically grant you hair-growing powers, but I can suggest a couple of lifestyle habits that promote hair growth. First of all, a healthy diet is key. More importantly, eating protein everyday is essential to boosting hair growth. In addition to protein, consuming iron and zinc is just as important – iron allows oxygen to be delivered to cells (and hair follicles) and zinc helps produce and repair body tissue. Other nutrients and vitamins that are necessary for healthy hair growth include: fats (Omega 3), Vitamin C, and Vitamin B (prevents hair loss).

Another important ingredient is minimizing your stress levels, both physically and emotionally. If these suggestions don’t seem to be making a difference, consider consulting your doctor concerning any medications you might be taking, the possibility of a scalp infection and/or hormonal imbalances. Some other points to keep in mind: limit your use of harsh styling products/tools (they damage follicles), don’t brush your hair more than twice a day, take it easy on your scalp (avoid tight braids), don’t use rubberbands, and take good care of your scalp.

If all else fails, you can test your luck with supplements and/or homeopathic remedies (like my sister’s hair masque), test out a product like Rogaine which is designed for both men and women, or get a divalicious wig à la Ru Paul!

M.I.S.S. Beauty Tip of the Week: Spring Break Sunburn Remedies

Greetings to all my fellow SpringBreakers out there! Whether you’re in the U.S. or someplace more exotic, chances are you and many students (myself included) throughout the world are planning on soaking up as many rays as possible in the coming weeks before returning for finals. With that said, the endorphins from vacationing and the temptation of sleeping on the beach will leave many with sun burnt skin. I am a huge advocate of sun safety, but I realize that even with SPF50 it’s not always possible to cover all the nooks and crannies on your body and sometimes the desire to be tan outweighs the fear of skin cancer (a la Jersey Shore). If you happen to get burned, don’t get bummed because I have some easy home remedies that will cool you off in no time at all:

  1. Take a cool bath for 10-20 minutes and air-dry (add oatmeal powder for best results)
  2. Generously apply Aloe Vera to burned skin as often as needed
  3. Soak a washcloth in cool water and use as a cold compress on skin (add baking soda for extra soothing)
  4. Drink lots of H2O to rehydrate your body (until your urine is clear)
  5. Avoid harsh soaps and other skin products
  6. Moisturize
  7. Pulverize an everyday potato and apply puree to skin
  8. Protect burnt bikini and bra lines from friction with cornstarch
  9. Invest in an after-sun lotion that calms irritated skin
  10. Pop a couple of aspirin
