The other day, I got a surprise message in my inbox from a gorgeous lady named Nena. Inside were pictures of fabulous earrings - bamboo style made of richly-patterned fabrics - that she makes herself. After being floored by the craft(wo)manship, I clicked on her Myspace page and saw that this talented lady has so much more to offer than the few pictures of accessories she included. Check out my favorite of her wares after the jump…

Swindle Magazine is, hands-down, one of my favorite magazines. Every issue is packed with culture, lifestyle and visuals that are informative and stimulating.
Issue #17, is no different. Among the many articles in this issue, Swindle brings us East L.A.’s obsession with all things Betty Boop! The cover story by Camille Lowry, Betty Boop Born & Praised in L.A., delves into the Betty Boop phenomenon with the Chicano Youth of East Los Angeles. The article makes some interesting points:
Colin Gunkel of the Chicano Studies Research Center at UCLA points out that Betty “looks a bit like a chola. She resonates with a style that’s perhaps more cha-cha than chola.
Colin believes that Betty was appealing because she was able to successfully negotiate the good girl being bad. He says, “She’s racy, sexual and flashy without compromising her morals, which are the competing demands of our culture.

You can read the rest of the article at Swindle.com or pick up issue #17 at your local Borders.

In our apocalyptic future, weapons will be wearable, chaos color-coordinated and guns will be designer. But we won’t have to wait for nuclear fallout to be fancy: Peter Gronquist debuted his exhibit last night at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles with weapons of mass consumption on display.

To celebrate the opening of a new Chanel store in Los Angeles next month, Chanel is introducing 4 limited edition nail colors. Inspired by famous streets and the pop-art colors of sunny skies and surf, the polishes are called appropriately enough - Melrose, Rodeo Drive, LA Sunrise, and LA Sunset. The limited edition colors will be available in store and then online beginning in June. I need to get down to LA in May - I really need the Robertson Boulevard purple!
While we’ve got Built By Wendy on our lips, we ought to shout out their spring sample sale this weekend, that starts tomorrow. Hit it up and get your cute on!
