LeSportsac Fall 09 Preview

Over the past few weeks we’ve had the chance to show you Fall 09 previews for LeSportsac’s Travel Cases, 35th Anniversary, S Collection and Artist in Residence. Today, we’re giving you a glimpse of the main Autumn 2009 collection, which features 24 new prints and chic revisions of the brands iconic shapes. From polka dots, florals, stripes, plaids to pop illustrations, there is a print for every mood. My favorite of the new prints is the Cerrado print (cheetah) because I’m a sucker for animal prints.

Though LeSportsac has many prints for Autumn, I’m most excited about the fashion solids which hearken back to LeSportsac’s roots from the 1970s. The metallic solids are fun and the gold is a stand out - metallic without being too shiny, the gold has a matte vibrancy that is subtle but definitely has some personality.

All of the prints and solids are available in all of the styles ranging from purses, totes, backpacks, travel cases, yoga bags, baby bags and all the small accessories. One of the new styles, the Dana, is a large shoulder bag with a rounded bottom. The new silhouette is really flattering and can hold a lot - the bag is meant for travel but it could easily be my everyday bag.

The fall collection will hit shelves later this summer and you can find it all LeSportsac boutiques, online at LeSportsac.com and at departments stores like Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.

LesportSac Artist in Residence: Fall 09 Preview

Known for vibrantly printed nylon ripstop, LeSportsac is celebrating its 35th Anniversary this year, and as it celebrates the past, LeSportsac also continues to look forward.    One new project, the Artist in Residence, is the 3rd collection in the series with past collections featuring the cute and cuddly works of Fifi Lapin.  For Fall 2009, LeSportsac teamed up with Japanese-American artist Tomokazu Matsuyama.

Matsuyama’s upbringing in both the U.S. and Japan inspire much of his work as he explores cultural similarities.  In an artist statement he says,

Within my work, I hope to render traditional icons and imagery within a broader ether of an international intermix that has become the evolution of what seems to be the urban-ideal of the global contemporary. Reinterpretation Edo period imagery as well as contemporary motifs and patterning, I hope to blend what is seen as Eastern and Western aesthetics into one that resists categorization and cultural belonging.

For LeSportsac’s Artist in Residence series, Matsuyama created 3 patterns - Paint Splash, Gingham and Numbers - releasing in August, September and October, respectively.  Paint Splash features “vibrant colors and indiscerable shapes” creating visual collision and chaos, while Gingham is a modern, multi-color version of the traditional checked pattern.   The third pattern, Numbers, is a visual representation of the Buddhist notion of reincarnation where 1 signifies birth, 2 and 3 represent aging and 4, when pronounced in Japanese, sounds similar to “perish.”

LeSportsac 35th Anniversary

2009 marks the 35th Anniversary of LeSportac and to commemorate the event, LeSportsac has introduced a 35th Anniversary collection of bags. The silhouettes are re-issues of some of the original styles that were in the early collections including a flight bag, canteen bag and makeup bag.

LeSportsac is not just bring back retro silhouettes - they’re bringing back all the retro accoutrements - prints, linings and hardware.  Each season, LeSportsac will roll out a new print selected from their archives.  The first collection featured black solid rip stop with a black/white/green striped webbing.  For summer, the very popular multi-color heart pattern is making a comeback.

Ladies and lovers of functionality and style! LeSportsac has hit it’s 35th Anniversary and wants to celebrate it by going back to their roots!  The anniversary collection offers a modern take on vintage, classic styles from 1974. ”What’s hip to zip then . . . is hip to zip now!”

The good folks over at LeSportsac were kind enough to send us some goodies as a sneak peak of some new products they’ll be releasing, in addition to their iconic nylon ripstop bags.  Known for generating great new graphic prints each season, LeSportsac is applying their prints to new canvases including notebooks and portable “Boom Box” speakers!  Now, your notebook can look as good as the rest of your get up.  And, the speakers!  They’re adorable, portable, and most importantly, they work!  No word yet on when exactly they drop, but they’ll be out for spring! Stay tuned . . . (pun intended)!

LeSportsac is unveiling its newly renovated New York City flagship today, just in time for the holiday shopping season! The flagship is located at 118 Greene Street, in swank Soho, and boasts two levels for customers to enjoy the “LeSportsac Experience.” The decor of 118 Greene Street is a departure from other LeSportsac retail environments: The company tapped Kenneth Park Architects to create a unique environment suited to showing it’s distinct universe of products. The first floor features white washed oak wood and plaster reliefs, of the LeSportsac tab, along the wall. Consistent with their continued use of eco-friendly materials, the staircase is encased in black faux-leather and the lower level is floored in black faux-leather. It sounds really beautiful, the perfect backdrop to LeSportsac’s colorful, graphic bags and accessories. The NYC flagship carries LeSportsac Classics, Men’s and Guys, Stella McCartney for LeSportsac and, the Artist In Residence series. I can’t wait to go home for the holidays so I can see it for myself!
