The Glamorous Life: 2010 Golden Globe Awards Style

Last night the Golden Globes aired and started the official round of 2010 award ceremonies. The Golden Globes is notoriously the fashion “dress rehersal” for the Oscars – and I really hope that this year, the Golden Globes are not an example of what we can expect at the Academy Awards. Everything from the fashion, to the actual show was very ho-hum BORING. I didn’t see anything that made me excited. It seemed like everyone played it very safe.

There were definitely some trends popping up on the red carpet:

  • As far as color these were the major players:  Black, Red, Purple (in all of its shades) and Pale Pastels.
  • Strapless – the most popular of the necklines – along with accompanying cleavage as an accessory
  • Waist details – lots of cinching at the waist with beading
  • Fabric flowers and ruffles
  • Hair – either upswept or down and very natural (blame it on the rain??)
  • Makeup – not too dramatic.  Most emphasis was on the lips – either very red or very pale.
  • Umbrellas are the new black? Sorry, just kidding – but it was really funny to see Red Carpet shots taken with umbrellas.

My very favorite looks included January Jones in Lanvin, Courtney Cox in a design by Victoria Beckham, Zoe Saldana in Louis Vuitton, Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta and Kate Hudson in Marchesa. There were 3 looks that I absolutely hated!  Mariah Carey and her boobs hanging out all over the place (did they have their own nomination??), Sandra Bullock in that sheer hot mess of a dress and Tina Fey in a Zac Posen dress that was actually not bad but did not suit her AT ALL.

Who were your favorites?  Who did you dislike the most?? Leave a comment and let us know your thoughts!

Don’t know about you ladies but I love color!! The future of fashion is looking towards lots of black, white and khaki, which is fine and certainly has it’s place but when I think Spring, I think COLOR. So I poured through the collections and pulled out some brights to provide inspiration at the end of these cold gloomy winter months. And not just one color but all colors. My suggestion for your coming Spring wardrobe is head to toe color, monochromatic dressing is fun: pair your blue dress with blue heels, a green all-in-one with green kicks, shades of yellow go together like a bunch of bananas and dare to go red-to-toe. Taste the rainbow in 2010.

Eyes To The Sky: Taste The Rainbow in 2010. Sonia Rykiel, Viktor & Rolf, Zac Posen, Yves Saint Laurent and Sonia Rykiel.

Diving for Pearls: Lanvin Fall 2009 Accessories

Lanvin Does Baubles--and Does It Well--for Fall!

Lanvin Does Baubles--and Does It Well--for Fall!

Real or fake, these accessories from the Fall 2009 Lanvin line are to die for! Literally. ‘Cause people don’t really dive for pearls anymore, after Mikimoto developed pearl oyster farms in the beginning of the 20th century.

Although these gems might be costume, they are far from cheap-looking. The necklaces mirror the noodle necklaces made in preschool, while the chic layers of thick bands remind me of the neck rings found historically in African and Asian cultures. The thick black necklace studded with crystals looks almost EXACTLY like the necklace and bracelet set that Barbie wore when she was a member of Barbie and the Rockers ‘round 1986. Babs’ version was fluorescent pink, but you know, that’s how Barbie rolled. My favorite piece is the bangle bracelet that looks almost like it is in a tension setting. The feather hair clips look like “fringe” borrowed from an exotic animal. I also like the handcuff ring a lot (shown at below retailer); this ring could serve as a modern day engagement ring! Throw these on the red carpet with a plain sheath and that would be all you would need. Would Rachel Zoe die? I think so, in a bananas way.

Punky Neck Rings were an accessories trend

Some of the baubles (and more wearable versions of the baubles) are available at this Italian site. Otherwise, if you are a bizz with a budget, check Forever 21 in the near future…..who knows, they may even copy Lanvin!

…and the ANDAM Fashion Award Goes To: Giles Deacon!

ANDAM Fashion Award Giles Deacon

Giles FW 2008 RTW

Back in April, M.I.S.S. gave you the dish on the ANDAM Paris Fashion Award and how to apply. Just to recap, ANDAM awards the €160,000 International Grand Prize, the largest prize in the fashion industry, to one up-and-coming designer, which gives that designer the chance to show in Paris during fashion week. On June 24th, ANDAM chose British designer Giles Deacon as the recipient of the International Grand Prize. ANDAM also awarded young  Swiss jewelry designer Ligia Dias their new Young Fashion Designer Award worth €20,000.

Giles’ 2008 and 2009 collections have garnered attention for having a variety of unique design elements such as meticulously handcrafted ruffles, laser cut stars in sheath dresses, and his use of large graphic prints incorporated into feminine silhouettes which are featured in his notable Spring ‘09 Ready-to-Wear “Pac Man” collection.

Ligia Dias‘ jewelry is best described as a combination of industrial materials like rope and chain with luxurious pearls, gems and satin ribbon. Dias has worked along-side Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz as an accesories design apprentice and her jewelry can be seen in Lanvin’s collections as late as SS 2004. More recently, Dias’ has collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld in designing ballet flats and was commissioned by Phillip Lim to create necklaces for the Phillip Lim 3.1 SS 2008 collection. Dias’ own line of jewelry can be seen at Yoox.

Sneaker Freaker Feature: Is High Fashion Really the New SB?

Sneaker Freaker Feature: Is High Fashion Really the New SB?

Sneaker Freaker Feature: Is High Fashion Really the New SB?

There is no doubt in my mind that high fashion influences low fashion and vice versa.  In Issue #15 of Sneaker Freaker Magazine, the sneaker enthusiasts take a deep look into the phenomenon that is the high end sneaker in the feature ‘Is High Fashion Really the New SB?’. The article examines the many ways in which high end fashion has influenced the sneaker game and in turn how the sneaker culture and low end fashion has caused luxury labels to go back to the drawing board and create a little something for the streets.

Is Gucci the New SB?

Is Louis the New SB?

Is Louis the New SB?

Taking an in depth look at a few of the worlds most prestigious luxury brands and their past and present involvement in the sneaker world, are none other than a few of our favorite women. Tee from TrashBag Aesthetics/Trenddoll covering the Kanye West favored Louis Vuitton, Claw Money of Blogue covering Gucci, and our very own Miss Mama reporting on Chanel are not only outstanding voices in the article, but they also happen to be apart of our ‘Women Making History’ series here at M.I.S.S. Crew.

Is Chanel the New SB?

Is Chanel the New SB?

This article is filled to the brim with information, insight, and not to mention tons of pictures of the illest kicks in the land. From my personal favorites Lanvin, and Jeremy Scott all the way down to the M.I.S.S. 2009 Calendar ‘Chanails’ featuring Chanel sneakers, this feature has got it all.

A little high end, a little low end, and a whole lot of drooling over the most covented kicks on the planet isn’t a bad way to kill some time. What do you think?

New Window & Spaces at Dover Street Market

New Window & Spaces at Dover Street Market

I love it when Dover Street Market updates their windows and spaces – they have a flair for making truly unique spaces that are borderline theatrical.  Each space is created and focused on displaying featured products in a way that highlights their beauty, as well as their artistic qualities.  The window features a giant sculptural black octopus by Les Trois Garçons and new spaces include Nowhere (where Bape was born), Lanvin, Loewe, and Stephen Jones.  Read the full story for photos of the spaces and a description of what makes them oh, so special!

Golden Globe Awards Fashion: Loves, WTFs? & Trends

Golden Globe Awards Fashion: Loves, WTFs? & Trends

I was one of the many, many people glued to their TVs to see what the celebrities (and their stylists) decided they should wear to the Golden Globe Awards.  There were gorgeous gowns, dazzling jewels and coiffed coifs.  Dior seemed to score big with many leading ladies wearing gowns by John Galliano for Dior.  But the biggest trend of the night was in the hair category – so many bangs in face!  I didn’t mind it, more annoying was the constant moving of the hair from the face.  As usual, there were the people that looked great, and people who I just looked at and wondered:  “Really, you have THAT much money and THAT much access to couture and diamonds and THAT’S the best you could do?”  One of my favorite looks of the night was Susan Sarandan in a black tux paired with a corset and long diamond necklaces.  Here’s a brief breakdown of my favorites, trends, and WTFs?

2 Favorite Dresses (minus the silly expressions):

Evan Rachel Wood in Elie Saab & Kate Beckinsdale in J. Mendel

Evan Rachel Wood in Elie Saab & Kate Beckinsdale in J. Mendel

It comes as no surprise that 2 of my favorite dresses would be black and white.  Wood’s dress is evocative of Chanel to me and is glamorous and age appropriate and a good choice for an award’s show.  Beckinsdale’s dress was my favorite of the night for pure dramatic effect.  The neckline was gorgeous and she carried it beautifully.  I didn’t love her earrings but she was smart in skipping the necklace and going with big earrings.  I hate when people feel like they need to junk up their decolletage in a strapless dress with a necklace.

3 more favorites:

ate Winslet in YSL, Eva Mendes in Dior, Maggie Gyllenhaal in Lanvin

Kate Winslet in YSL, Eva Mendes in Dior, Maggie Gyllenhaal in Lanvin

I love Kate Winslet – she’s smart, funny, strong and a “Dame” in the making.  Her choice in dress reflected her personality – it was sleek, sophisticated and strong.  Eva Mendes was beautiful in Dior (though I was surprised she wasn’t in Calvin Klein – you know, the perfume deal . . .) and her necklace was pretty though I don’t know if I loved them together.  And Maggie Gyllenhaal looked fresh, young and independent in her Lanvin gown.  I thought all 3 ladies had nice hairstyles – I’m a big fan of up-dos for fancy occasions and their coiffs were modern and not stuffy at all.

Dover Street Market: New Window & New Spaces

dover street market
London emporium Dover Street Market has recently updated its window and added some new spaces featuring Lanvin, Salvatore Ferragamo, Yves Saint Laurent, Henry Holland and Hussein Chalayan. The Ferragamo space showcases 80 years of archive pieces from the Creations Collection by Salvatore Ferragamo – so exciting!
dover street market salvatore ferragamo
Yves Saint Laurent opens its first ever stand-alone “Edition 24″ space at Dover Street Market in a space designed by the renowned theatrical set designer Michael Howells. New Autumn/Winter ‘08-’09 designs are highlighted in the Lanvin, Henry Holland and Hussein Chayalan spaces. One of the more interesting spaces is One Plus One Eve Democracy – Medical Vintage, a new collaboration space featuring Christian Lacroix Haute Couture and Katerina Jebb’s personal vintage collection. Finally, one of the newest additions to DSM is the jewelry line of Tom Binns. His first collection, “Pearls in Peril” is the first of many collections that will be exclusive to Dover Street Market and I love what I’ve seen. Think tons of pearls layered with even more faux-diamond jewels. It’s a little bit drunken prom queen – but in a good way. Binns won the CFDA Fashion Award for Accessories Designer of the Year in 2006 so I’m excited to see his new collections. See the jewels and photos of the designer spaces after the jump . . .

Hint Magazine featured some high-end looks by Givenchy, Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent and more in an illustrated multi-media presentation called Drawing Blood. The feature is illustrated by kuanth and the flash design was done by RenderMonkey. You can choose the music that plays in the background as well. The illustrations feature wide-eyed girls (very Blythe-esque with different colored eyes) and creatures wearing the must-have pieces of the coming season. You can watch Drawing Blood here.
