MAYA HAYUK: “Feeling Space” Brooklyn based artist Maya Hayuk is a prolific muralist, photographer, printmaker, painter, illustrator, and documentarian. Her fearless attraction to wild color, a genre-bending mix of graphic design, graffiti, illustration, and abstraction has earned her a wide international audience. Hayuk’s work overflows with a uniquely cultivated handmade aesthetic. Part punk, part psychedelic explosion, her paintings, prints and murals display unbridled enthusiasm. Her monograph “Just Good Vibes” describes the work: “multicolored diamonds morph into rainbows on public walls, day glow birds and flowers sprout extra appendages appearing both beautiful and menacing, and everything eschews logic while making perfect aesthetic sense. Hayuk’s bold images of colorful beauty are at once visceral, ethereal, humorous and political.” LOWELL DARLING: “Full Disclosure” Legendary California conceptual artist Lowell Darling’s career has spanned over thirty years and has earned him an international following. His work in the public sphere over the past three decades has included a colorful campaign to unseat California Governor Jerry Brown, Urban Acupuncture performances to relieve pressing city problems, and stitching together the San Andreas fault to contain earthquakes.

Amanda Lopez was born and raised in Sacramento, California under the watchful eye of her parents and paintings of La Virgen de Guadalupe. Her father lent her a camera at the age of 17, and photography soon became her savior.In anticipation of Lopez’s upcoming solo exhibition CaliLOVE at Upper Playground Sacramento, we threw a few questions to this talented photographer. Tell us a bit about yourself/background. How did you get into photography? I grew up in Sacramento, CA in a super strict Mexican Catholic household. My parents kept a close eye on my siblings and I but always encouraged us to explore our interests. Both my parents are creative and artsy in their own right so they nurtured my interest in the arts. I started out wanting to paint but quickly discovered I wasn’t very good so when I got to high school, I decided to try photography. That first class changed my life. Encouraged by my photo teacher Mr. Tafoya and armed with a camera given to me by my dad, which by the way remains in my arsenal of camera equipment, I began to explore different types of photography and quickly discovered my interest in portraiture. Your work has an obvious Dios de Los Muertos look. Why this theme? The CaliLOVE show is inspired by Dia De Los Muertos and really came together in October of ‘09 when my homegirl Mayra Ramirez curated a show at 510 Studio in Oakland and asked me to be apart of it. The line up she organized was ridiculous. Mike Giant, Miguel Bounce Perez, and Angel Diaz were some of the artists showing so I knew I had to step my game up. So, I recruited my talented friends Jenni Tay to do makeup and Justin Downs to do the hair and we set out to create 3 new portraits for the show. The images were well received so when I got the confirmation that I’d be showing at Upper Playground in Sacramento, I decided to continue on with the series. Thus far, I’ve shot 11 new images for the show.

A highly-regarded explorer of visual communication, Aldous Huxley once said, “The man who comes back through the Door in the Wall will never quite be the same as the man who went out.” The same can be said about a few particular months of teenage life experienced by artist Tofer Chin, depicted, from memory, in his new body of work, showing at the Fecal Face Gallery in San Francisco.

Entitled “Alex,” Chin’s new show further represents his on-going relationship with Op-Art, as well as his perseveration on sensory perception and mind expansion, while also impressively marking his move to wholly personalize and reinvigorate the movement. Whereas previous works used unnatural color and concept to examine the spiritual and psychological impact of synthetic LSD, “Alex” strives to enhance the personal and shift to the organic by refocusing on the naturally-derived hallucinogen, mescaline. Unlike LSD, mescaline never lies. Instead, the mescaline experience includes visual enhancements of originating truths.

New Moon. Inspired by the Chinese Zodiac, the New Moon group exhibit is slated to open at NYC’s Myplasticheart Gallery. A mixed media show featuring a handpicked roster of 25 artists from all over the world – including names such as Jeremiah Ketner and Camilla D’Errico – each artist chose a different zodiac animal interpreted through their own unique lens. Opened recently at the Fowler Museum is the ‘Meet me at the Center of the Earth’ exhibition by Chicago-based artist Nick Cave PhotoTour. The presentation consists of thirty-five of his soundsuits, which are sculptures made by multi-layered mixed-media and are named for the sounds they create when worn. Influenced by African and Caribbean rituals as well as haute couture, Cave’s work explores the ideas of transformation, myth and identity. The traveling exhibition is opened now till May 30, 2010.

‘Go East’

A Three Day Exhibition in New York

New York, NY – For a special three-day only exhibition, Los Angeles based contemporary gallery LeBasse Projects expands its horizons to the East Coast. LeBasse Projects’ temporary exhibition offers New York a collection of work by some of the gallery’s best and brightest talent. ‘Go East’ presents the gallery’s penchant for fresh, innovative artists featuring Yoskay Yamamoto, Tessar Lo, Edwin Ushiro, Joao Ruas, Eric Fortune, Mia, and Nate Frizzell.

Though LeBasse Projects calls Culver City’s Art District home base, it aims to conceptually extend its white walls and showcase its core group of artists. Originally born as the monthly art party ‘project:’ in 2005, LeBasse quickly evolved into a gallery after founder, Beau Basse gained a following for his strength in exhibiting new talent. Now the re-branded gallery shows its serious commitment to bringing their talented roster of artists directly to collectors. Besides regular in-house exhibitions, LBP has begun participating in major art fairs and is hosting ‘pop-up’ shows both nationally and internationally.

The ‘Go East’ exhibition marks one of many future endeavors LeBasse Projects is planning to carry the messages of its artists around the globe. The seven artists in this exhibition represent the many new contemporary style that LeBasse Projects has helped define.

This Halloween, enjoy an evening of monsters, mayhem and music as San Francisco’s Shadow Circus Creature Theatre brings its belligerent puppet show back to Los Angeles! Shadow Circus uses life-sized latex puppets to create a seething underworld of drugged-up dinosaurs, giant cockroaches and bizarre mythological beasts and engages them in scripts full of pop-culture parody and social satire.

Accompanying them are marionette group Ninos de la Tierra, synth pop act Venus Virus, sideshow performer and escape artist Miss Bella Trixx and burlesque performer Mariel A La mode.

Art HERstory: Niagara Detroit

“As a kid, I thought women artists, who made it, were serious and wore no makeup.”

I have to admit, growing up, I didn’t think “women artists, who made it” wore makeup either, but when I first discovered Niagara Detroit, all my ideas of what a women artist should and shouldn’t be went out the window.

Hailed as “The Queen of Detroit Pop Art,” Niagara Detroit is drop dead gorgeous. Her name alone is cool. She walks with a feminist swagger and also happens to be Punk Rock royalty. This lady can rock eyeliner and vocals like it’s nobody’s business—and her art—breathtaking!

Niagara Detroit was born August 23, 1956. In 1973, while attending the University of Michigan, Niagara formed the punk band, Destroy All Monsters. She was the lead vocalist while they were active until 1985, earning big attention due to the presence of former members of The Stooges and the MC5. Niagara soon after fronted the super-group Dark Carnival (also with Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton). Niagara still does occasional rock performances in Australia and Tokyo.

Niagara utilized her art school experience in creating album and promotional art for Destroy All Monsters’ /Dark Carnival performances. Combining an illustrator’s hand with some collage and pop iconography, Niagara’s style began to take shape during these years, and by the early 90’s she was beginning to show in small exhibits and cafes around the Detroit area.

Niagara teamed up with the Detroit gallery for her first exhibits “All Men Are Cremated Equal” (1996) and “Faster Niagara, Kill…Kill” (1997). They were breakout shows that gained her much praise. Soon art mags like Juxtapoz were calling her “The Queen Of Detroit” and many successful exhibits would follow in other cities like Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Sydney and Tokyo to name but a few. “The Niagara Girl,” who appears in many female guises, would come to represent feminist swagger with drop dead gorgeous looks and an equally dangerous demeanor. Hard-boiled, tough talking gals who would rather dispatch a man than put up with any of his shit. Her bold and colorful post-pulp comic strip style of femme fatales in various depictions was culturally solidified by Callie Khoury’s Thelma and Louise, which shares a kindred spirit with Niagara’s subjects, along with the bad side of 40’s and 50’s film icons such as Bette Davis, and Lauren Bacall.

In 2002, Niagara’s work began to stray away from the gun-toting, booze swilling Femme fatale to a more intricate “Opium Series”. Still decidedly feminine, but the violence was turned inward, as world-weary, flapper-esque beauties are depicted in druggie repose amidst swirling opium fumes, full of Chinese patterns and applique make the series her most detailed and introspective work to date.

In 2006, a career retrospective of her art and music was chronicled in her coffee table book “Beyond The Pale” on 9mm Books.

On the tail of her sold out Japanese tour and her Hysteric Glamour release – the Detroit city pop art Queen returns to Australia for more impressive art touring at the Outré Gallery. Niagara “From Detroit with Love” is showing in Melbourne from Saturday, February 16th until March 11th, 2008.
