Ever wonder what goes into compiling those hundreds of pages? All the hours, joy and pain in putting together that one issue a year that could double as a deadly weapon - you know how heavy “that” issue is!! Well set to debut this weekend at the Sundance film festival is “The September Issue”. WWD reports that filmmaker R.J. Cutler documented 300 hours of Anna Wintour and her team as they prepared for the September 2007 issue, Vogue’s biggest issue ever. Not only does the film explore the process to creating this massive issue but dives into the the intimate details of Wintour’s personal life relationships with her late father, legendary British newspaper editor Charles Wintour, and daughter Bee Shaffer, as well as with creative director Grace Coddington.
There are said to be guest appearances by Oscar de la Renta, Patrick Demarchelier, Karl Lagerfeld, Nicolas Ghesquière, Jean Paul Gaultier, Stefano Pilati, Phillip Lim and Isabel Toledo. A star studded cast to say the least! How many times have you thought “if I could only know what goes on in the inside” . . . well now we just might get to know!

The Museum at FIT’s newest special exhibition, “Seduction,” explores the history of the expression of sexuality through dress. With pieces spanning 1785 to the present, “sexiness,” is a relative term considering the flappers of 1920 were scandolous for showing their ankles. FIT took pieces from their permanent collection to curate the show with pieces ranging from an open bodice gown from 1785 to a Playboy bunny suit. Designs by Jean Paul Gaultier, Azzedine Alaïa, Peter Som, Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein and Costume National are included in the exhibition. “The complex relationship between seduction and dress will present visitors with a history of fashion as well as that of sexuality, moral standards, and social norms.” I think this is a really interesting theme - let’s face it, humans have been dealing with sexuality since the beginning of time. It will be cool to see how the concept of sexuality has influcened the way we dress. “Seduction” runs through June 16, 2009.

Milliner Stephen Jones made his first fragrance with Comme des Garçons Parfums division, which is set to release in September. It’s clear from the packaging (which I LOVE) that Mr. Jones took many cues from the materials and packaging of hats and applied them to his fragrance packaging. The grosgrain ribbon attached to the bottle references a material used quite a lot in millinery. The box the perfume bottle comes in is, of course, a mini-hat box and the filling of the box is “merry-widow” netting, a material often used for veils on hats. You’ve probably also noticed the unique shape of the bottle: The designer was inspired by an ink bottle from the 1890s and had it remade with black transparent glass.
As far as the actual fragrance, “‘It’s a violet that’s been hit by a meteorite,’ said Jones, referring to the scent’s juice, which comprises notes of violet and violet leaf, as well as ’synthesized cyber aldehyde.’ ‘There’s something innocent and romantic and otherworldly, as well.’” In addition to violet and space juice, the scent contains hints of love, carnation, rose, jasmine, heliotrope, gaiac wood, magma, black cumin, vetiver and amber. I can’t wait to get a whiff of “synethesized cyber aldehyde.” If any brand were to add the scent of space juice to their fragrance it should come as no surprise that Comme des Garçons is involved.

On a side note, Jean Paul Gaultier is adding another women’s fragrance to his collection - one that’s a bit younger, fresher and stronger. The scent is Ma Dame and the campaign features model-of-the-moment Agyness Deyn. Ma Dame will release on September 1st.
