We Got the Beat: Hudson Mohawke

Considering how fantastic a producer J. Dilla was, it must be very daunting for 22-year old newcomer Hudson Mohawke to be labeled as the next “Disciple of Dilla.” (XLR8R Magazine, April 2007) But Hudson, who also goes by Hudson Mo or simply Hud Mo, has had an impressive resume so far and at the rate he’s going, he may just live up to this moniker.

Hud Mo started his hip-hop career working as a producer, focusing specifically on instrumentals and beats. At age 15, he became the youngest UK DMC Finalist ever and is currently the Scottish ITF Champion. In order to pique the public’s interest in the Hip-Hop of Glasgow, Scotland, Hud Mo literally scoured the local clubs and the Glasgow School of Art to find like-minded individuals on the same quest to promote unique music and artwork. A collective of movers and shakers called LuckyMe (LuckyMe) was formed, and soon the crew started releasing music under a label of the same name.

Vans Syndicate Exhibition in San Francisco

vans syndicate

I had the pleasure of attending the Vans Syndicate Exhibition in San Francisco for Adam from Slam X Hype since SF is a bit of a distance from New Zealand. The event celebrated the launch of the Fall Vans Syndicate line designed by designers and skaters like John Cardiel, Grime, Steve Olson, WTAPS, and Max Schaaf. The event was held at On Six Gallery on gritty Sixth Street and the PBR was flowing all night long. You can check out the feature that I wrote on Slam X Hype but here’s some stuff that didn’t make it into the feature (the fun stuff!).

If you know me then you know I love me some Grime, especially Mr. Dizzee Rascal.  I’m not the only one.  The Other Club has been digging up some old tracks from Rinse and The Silent Listener.  You can download an early Dizzee session from here.  I just finished listening to it and I highly suggest you give it a listen too.   If you haven’t seen him perform you may have the chance soon - Mr. Rascal is coming stateside in July!  Woooo!

We Got The Beat: Estelle Shines

estelle shine
I remember hearing Estelle a few years back on some UK Grime compilations and really liked her flow. Because I knew her as a grimey rapper I was really surprised to hear her new sound and see her new look. Her new album, Shine, released this past Tuesday and features Estelle doing a bit more singing than she did on her debut album. She also worked with some interesting people on her new album including Kanye West, John Legend, Cee-Lo and Kardinal Offishall, Mark Ronson, Swizz Beatz, Wyclef Jean, and will.i.am. Her new album features a more grown & sexy Estelle, one that sounds confident in her new sound. You can purchase the album in stores or here.
