M.I.S.S. NYFW: Gen Art “The New Garde” Fall 2010 Presentation

Nomia Fall 2010

Nomia Fall 2010

The night before fashion week officially started, I ventured out in the snow to the Gen Art “New Garde” Fresh Faces in Fashion presentation, featuring four up and coming fashion lines Nomia, WesFeld, Gar-de, and Sophomore. Each collection had it’s own showcase area and style on two floors, allowing revelers to wander, mingle, and take pictures at their leisure. Host Molly Sims spoke to an excited crowd about the Gen Art organization and Plastics Make It Possible.

Nomia, based in Williamsburg and designed by Yara Flynn, was presented on the first floor with a rotating cast of models that periodically moved from pedestal to pedestal.  The collection of  wearable dresses and separates with an edge featured mostly blacks and greys, with a touch of metal. I loved the white, metallic shouldered one sleeved dress, mesh legged pants, and the grey dress with the triangular cut out below the collar.

WesFeld, helmed by designers Daniel Feld and Wesley Nault, who met as contestants on Project Runway season 5 presented their American Couture collection, supported by beating out over 160 other designers to win a contest by “Plastics Make It Possible. Their highly textured collection, inspired by water and nature, was made using plastic-based materials and fabrics.

Gar-de Fall 2010

Gar-de (pronounced Gard) by design director Ling Cheung again featured models on pedestals wearing a fairly dark  bold and chich collection inspired by menswear but maintaining a feminine sensibility, and constructed with mixed materials. Highlights included the grey two tone pants paired with an almost tank-like vest, the luxe oversized slouchy sweaters , the grey cape-like coat and the black motorcycle jacket combinations.

Sophomore Fall 2010

Sophomore, a retro-inspired streetwear line by Madeline Von Froomer and Chrissie Miller (daughter of cult astrologist Susan Miller of Astrologyzone.com) attacked their presentation very differently, staging a photo shoot where models, a stylist and photographer, went on with their business while the crowd looked on. The cheeky easy basics collection contained statement t-shirts, high-waisted booty shorts, bustier sundresses and other relaxed casual separates.

Amongst all the craziness of the event, I spotted some celebrities in the crowd, like Simon Van Kampen and Alex McCord of Bravo’s Real Housewives Of New York, former Project Runway contestants Kenley Collins and Stella Zotis, Natasha Galinka from Cycle 8 of America’s Next Top Model, and Whitney and Roxy from MTV’s The City (who were actually filming during the event. I will likely end up in the background of a bunch of scenes!)

Trina Turk Showcases New “Pop Art” Collection

Trina Turk showcased her new “Pop Art” collection at her Los Angeles boutique Wednesday night, along with a new line of jewelry. Displayed among LA’s best dressed were, well, the best dresses for spring – even for winter if you can bear thin layers. Her boutique’s ceiling is covered with orbs for lighting, a perfect complement to the new collection, as well as to the store’s décor. Bright and bold prints donned the light dresses – some accented by embellishments – that are perfect underneath Turk’s heavier jackets, which are grandma-esque in material but still oh-so-chic in structure.

Spring is obviously just around the corner in fashion, since bathing suits, both single- and two-piece, were racked in the middle of the store, with cover-ups and scarves to match. And no outfit is complete without accessories; among the colorful scarves were large-framed sunglasses and vintage jewelry pieces. The rings were big, bright, and flashy, some were kept plain with huge gems, while others were embedded with sparkle in the enamel. The necklaces were geometrics on chains, with earrings to match – circles and squares hung from mannequins’ necks and donned the jewelry case.

10% of the night’s proceeds went to Gen Art, the organization showcasing the new collection, and minimum purchases received complimentary scarves. Check out Trina Turk’s clothes and jewelry before the spring arrives and the goods are gone.

Gen Art: Shop NYC

Dresses by Nature Vs. Future

Dresses by Nature Vs. Future

So I’ve been hearing about this designer shopping event called Shop NYC for the past couple of years, and really wanted to check it out. Thanks to Bijules, I got a comp ticket to enter and see what it was going on. And this is when I admit my mistakes and tell you that I messed up. I should have told you guys about this earlier.

Gen Art is an arts and entertainment organization with offices in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami and Chicago, that is dedicated to showcasing emerging fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians and visual artists. They produce over 100 events a year, and Shop NYC is just one of them. Utilizing designers featured in Gen Art runway shows, as well as some of New York’s top emerging fashion and accesory lines, Shop NYC allows fashionistas to purchase current run pieces, samples, one-offs, and pre-release products directly from designers at discounts of up to 70% off. In addition they also had a beauty area with free makeup applications, hair touch ups, and brow shaping.

I saw a lot of clothes and jewelry from brands that we at M.I.S.S. will likely be reporting on individually in the near future, but you can get a taste in the photo gallery. My personal favorites were the dresses by Sonia Rykiel that were stashed in the mashup designer dress section. So cute! And cute’s not even my thing! I also loved the cotton and jersey pieces by Mary Meyer. I was smart to not bring a wad of cash, cuz I would have dropped it on her Spine Leggings in an instant. I don’t condone stealing…but I can’t lie! I thought it for a split second!  I also, for the first time every in my many year’d life got my face totally done up by the makeup people at Dex New York. I’m a mascara, lip gloss, and that’s it kind of girl, and just have to say it felt totally weird to get the sponge with wet foundation all over my face. But when my makeup artist was all done, the combination of their mineral based products looked really good, lessening my under eye circles, and highlighting my cheekbones in a pretty natural way.

In all, I think the cost of a $15 ticket to the event was probably worth it when you combine the steals and deals to be had, the beer and wine bar, and use of the beauty section.  So next time New Yorkers, I promise I’ll tell you ahead of time when this event is going down (psssst…. it’s in November, date TBA) and for the ladies in Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, and San Francisco – keep your eyes peeled for SHOP events in your cities. The next one will be in Miami on June 18th. Everyone everywhere else, check out the Gen Art boutique of Yoox.com for some exquisite fashion choices.

roadKILL By The Recycled Dead SS09 & Fall Preview

The Recycled Dead

The Recycled Dead

roadKill from the Recycled Dead as worn in the Gen Art Fresh Faces In Fashion SS08 show with K.Z.O. Menswear.

Don’t be scared, it won’t bite. But at one time it would have. Taking the refuse of the animal world: teeth, claws, skulls, feet, bones, tails, feathers and the like, roadKILL is a jewelry and accessories line like no other. Every item used is hand picked from around the world by The Recycled Dead duo, Christopher and Whitney and often by the hands of Native Americans. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind wonderment that embodies “their adoration of fine art, taxidermy, and couture fashion.”

roadKILL

roadKILL

I love when nature merges with fashion. When beauty can be created out of what people often consider trash or useless objects and intern you have a much desired speciment that have people clammering to get their hands one. When at one point the parts to the equation that brought about what you now desire where something you left for dead. You never thought you wanted it but now you do. Welcome to roadKILL from the Recycled Dead.
