M.I.S.S. VEGAS 02.09: Vans Apparel & Footwear

While in  Vegas we had the pleasure of checking out the Vans girl’s apparel and footwear. Vans is working with two very talented women on collaborative projects - spanning both apparel and footwear - Kime Buzzelli and Kim Saigh. Kime Buzzelli is an artist and the owner of Show Pony, a boutique in Los Angeles and Kim Saigh is a tattoo artist on LA Ink. Kime Buzzelli’s collection for Vans showcases her signature illustrations, sassy charm and vintage leanings. Highlights included the “Show Pony Purse” - a bag heavily influenced by vintage silhouettes, the “Sorry For Suckers” Tote bag and the Faux Leather Jacket. The collection was centered around black and white with bright pops of color brought in by Kime’s drawings and illustrations. Other items in the collection includes tees, hoodies, Wellesly shoe and wide leg trousers. Kim Saigh’s line was very feminine and centered around two central themes: skulls, candy & hearts and cherry blossoms & butterflies. Stand out pieces included the Skate Art Fashion Bag and Tattoo Art Belt. The collection also includes a purse, Wellesley Hi shoes, a tee, hoodie and jeans. The collections are a great representation of the two artists and they release on June 5th. Start saving those pennies because these pieces are truly special.

Vans’ in-line collection stays true to their motto “where the beach meets the street.” They do a wonderful job of balancing their trademark skate look with just the right amount of street edge. The Fall collection centers around two central themes. The first, Uncommon People, is a mix of patterns and prints centering on fun, bold statement pieces influenced by silhouettes from the ’70s and ’80s. New fun plaid color combinations together with Ultra Skinny Bright jeans makes these pieces stand out. The second theme, Old Money, is a fun, flirty take on “prep” without straying too far from Vans’ checkerboard roots.

For fall, Vans has lots great accessories including belts, bags, wallets, hats, scarves - whatever you need, they make it. The footwear was a continuation of the apparel stories. Great women’s silhouettes in wearable color stories was the name of the game. Thankfully, the line include plenty of hi-top styles - some are super high with gold down options with contrast fabrics. Their versatile and you can get a few looks out of one pair of kicks - a great value!

While we were there, we had the chance to speak with Ashley Moltz, the product manager for accessories, and she took us through the themes of the Fall line and what is was working with Kime Buzzelli and Kim Saigh. Check it out below:

The Deck Shoe

Every girl has one pair of shoes that they wear every day of every summer. Mine are always flat, and a little flashy. 2007 was all about the glitter-flecked, peep-toe jellies. And now that Summer 2008 is here (just about), i think it’s safe to say that I’ve finally found my annual summer shoe. The deck shoe is back.

First bought to the marine scene by Paul Sperry in 1935, the shoe has evolved from practicality to high fashion. Originally designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, the shoe has sustained its status as a leisure shoe since its birth and is now worn on and off the deck! Now popular labels, such as Timberland, have even embarked on their own version of the deck shoe.

I recently hooked myself up with an incredible red patent pair from Office in London. Retailing at £45 (appx $90), they’re not exactly the cheapest but, being the magpie that i am, i have a weakness for all things shiny. Especially if they’re red! They even have cute little anchors printed on the inside.

Check it out and get yourself some fly footwear!

I’m ready for the yacht decks and the French Riviera this summer. Are you? ;)

Proenza Schouler - Shoe Sneak Peak!

proenza schouler shoe

Last week we told you that Proenza Schouler had announced that they would be releasing a footwear line.  We just got a sneak peak of one of the styles and I have to say that I think it represents the designers well and is true to their aesthetic.  I love the traingular heel and the contrast in materials and colors.  The shoe is very unique - definitely a statement piece - the kind of shoe you build outfits around.  The duo has also designed other styles including ballet slippers, loafers, lace-up sandals and heels and will be available in the upcoming resort season.  The shoes will range in price from $300 to $3,000 with an average cost of $685.   When asked the next logical question about when a bag range is coming out, Lazaro Hernandez stated:  “It’s because we didn’t have anything to say yet. The entire market is so dense with bags and everything else, that until we found something original and specific to say, we didn’t want to say anything. We don’t do anything unless we have something to say.”  All I know is that I can’t wait to see what they have to “say.”

Proenza Schouler Launching Shoe Line

proenza schouler

Proenza Schouler is launching a footwear line to coordinate with its apparel collections. The young men behind the label have been fashion superstars since their debut collection and I’m really looking forward to see what they come up with for our feet. They are releasing select style for resort and a full line for Spring 2009. I hope this means we can expect to see the boys expanding into other product categories like handbags and beauty. Only time will tell . . .
