M.I.S.S. NYFW: Max Azria FW2010 Collection

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Max Azria: Sheer yokes

It seems since Max and Lubov Azria’s move towards minimalism in Spring 2009 that they’ve decided to stay in that direction. While there’s nothing to get to excited about their Fall 2010 collection, it’s still a beautiful one to behold. The monochromatic outfits in black and bluish-grey felt like fashion choices that  Trinity of The Matrix would make, or maybe it’s the slick dark hairstyling that makes me think that? Anyway, the line of darks were occasionally interrupted with serene light olive, camel and white, giving a cool overall feel to the collection.

Sheer yokes, panels of leather, and satin provided the interest needed against  the matte fabric present throughout. And hints of sparkle bounced off black sequin trim in a non tacky way.  Style lines and hemlines sometimes switched from straight to asymmetrical, silhouettes would switch from body conscious to loose, giving the right amount of variation within the monochrome outfits.

Meet The Designers of Project Runway Season 6

The 16 designers competing to be the next winner of Project Runway

The 16 designers competing to be the next winner of Project Runway

How fans of Project Runway were able to survive a year without hearing Tim Gunn say “Make it work!” or Heidi Klum’s bitter-sweet “Auf wiedersehen,” we will never know. What we do know is that the battle between Lifetime and Bravo is over and your favorite fashion design reality show is back! Lifetime has released a clip introducing the 16 designers competing to win. The batch of contestants look promising enough for an interesting season of Project Runway, let’s just hope the assumption sticks!

If you’re wondering about any differences in the show besides the obvious network switch, Project Runway has moved set from Parsons in New York to FIDM in Los Angeles but the finale still takes place in Bryant Park during New York Fashion Week. There’s also a new show within the show, Models of the Runway, which will give a behind-the-scenes look into the competition and drama going on amongst the models for the designers.

The sixth season is set to premiere on Lifetime August 20th, 2009 at 10pm et/pt.

New On Bravo: The Fashion Show

As M.I.S.S. mentioned before, Project Runway is moving to LifeTime. So what’s to fill the huge empty void at Bravo? The Fashion Show. The Fashion Show will have a fun female host and fashion savvy male mentor who knows the do’s and don’ts of design: Kelly Rowland and Isaac Mizrahi.  Rowland and Mizrahi along with Vice President of IMG Fashion, Fern Mallis, will serve as judges for the competition. A total of 15 contestants will compete each week in what’s called the Harper’s Bazaar mini challenge, which is judged by the magazine’s Special Projects Director Laura Brown, and an elimination challenge.

For each week, the winning design will be manufactured and sold on Bravotv.com. For the finale, the winning designer will be voted for by the viewers instead of the judges. The prize? $125,000 and the opportunity to have their clothing line sold in the retail market. The Fashion Show may sound like a Project Runway rip-off but it’ll be interesting to see the designs that come out of it, especially when the contestants face two challenges every week instead of one compared to PR. And even if the designs aren’t good, everybody knows reality t.v. exists because of the personalities they feature.

Check the video below and get to know a bit about the contestants, then see them in action during The Fashion Show season premiere on Thursday, May 7th, 2009 at 10PM ET/PT.

Calling All Up & Coming Designers: ANDAM Fashion Award

Andam Fashion Award 2009

Andam Fashion Award 2009

After much success in the last two decades, the ANDAM (Association Nationale pour le Développement des Arts de la Mode, National Association for the Development of the Fashion Arts) Paris Fashion Award is opening their doors once again for applicants and entries in this year’s competition.

Founded in 1989 by Nathalie Dufour, ANDAM hosts a major competition every year to welcome, launch and provide support for emerging new fashion talents. The competition is open to all up and coming designers on the French and international fashion scene, with a generous endowment of €160,000 for the selected winner.  This is the largest fashion prize in the world, and is an opportunity that should not be missed. As 2009 is ANDAM’s 20th Anniversary, they have also introduced a new prize of €20, 000 to a young French fashion designer.  This celebratory and special prize was encouraged by the outstanding results of the 2008 competition, along with the ongoing support they have received over the years by private and institutional partners. This additional prize will be given in conjunction with the endowment of €160, 000.

ANDAM is accepting entry materials right now, with the final deadline being the 25th April 2009 – you must be quick, not long left y’all! All applicants must have plans for a fashion show and development in France, and also be under the age of 40 (as of January 1st 2009).

If you are a winner, this generosity from ANDAM will most definitely give you a kick start into your future career as a designer. This will be a stepping stone that many will envy, and you will be given an opportunity to put your mark in the fashion scene. Your name will be up there amongst the likes of M.I.S.S. favourite Jeremy Scott (winner 1998), Victor & Rolf (winner 1994) and more notably, last year’s winner Gareth Pugh. This is a chance you should take; a chance to get your foot in the fashion industry’s door which, more often than not, is shut in many faces. Good Luck ladies and gents!
