L.A.M.B. RTW Fall 2010

The good people over at M·A·C were kind enough to share their facecharts from the Fall 2010 shows during New York Fashion Week. Today’s facecharts include L.A.M.B. and Vena Cava, whose shows took place on Thursday, February 11th at Milk Studios.

M·A·C artist, Charlotte Tilbury describes this look as, “1930’s prostitute-trampy, smokey eye, deep “rougeoir” lips, and beautiful pale skin. Face and Body Foundation was applied all over for a “doll-like” glow. For glossy, sultry cat eyes, Tilbury used M·A·C Fluidline in Blacktrack and Eye Kohl in Smolder. Lip treatment was dabbed over the top to create a wet look. Staying true to the designer’s most favored and signature look (when have we NOT seen Gwen Stefani rocking a red mouth?), lips were heavily painted on using M·A·C Burgundy lip pencil and Lipmix in Crimson.

Vena Cava RTW Fall 2010

M·A·C artist, Lloyd Simmonds created a bronzy, bright lipped look for Vena Cava. At the request of the designers,  models “looked like they spent the day skiing and horseback riding- fresh, flushed, but tanned.” For the face, Simmonds applied M·A·C  Select Cover-Up Concealer (used as foundation). Pro Cream Colour Base in Bronze and Mid-Tone Sepia were swept across forehead and cheekbones for a windblown appearance. M·A·C Pro Shine Wax was dabbed over the Cream Colour Base across the bridge of the nose for a fresh, dewy finish. Eyes were kept neutral using M·A·C Pro Powder Blush in Taupe, Eye Shadow in Style Predator, Pro Lash Mascara in Black (applied to top lashes only), finally topped off with a layer of Pro Shine Wax. For a sophisticated, matte mouth, Simmonds used M·A·C Lipmix in Red and followed the natural outline of the lips.

M.I.S.S. Healthy Bites: It’s Pumpkin Time!

It's pumpkin time!

It's pumpkin time!

Grab your carving knife and get creative…and healthy.  It’s the fall season, the best time for pumpkins straight from the vine.  Pumpkins make festive Halloween decor, but they can also make a tasty, nutritious source of fruit.  Don’t start digging into that pumpkin pie just yet, because pumpkins can pop up on your plate in other healthier ways.

One of the best parts about carving a pumpkin is scooping out all the insides.  But don’t even think about tossing the seeds, because you can make yourself a healthy snack that’s so good, you’ll wish you carved more pumpkins!  After rinsing and drying off the seeds, coat with a small amount of oil and your favorite seasonings.  Arrange in a single layer on a baking tray and bake for around 30 minutes.  Then just munch and enjoy!  No need to remove the hull like sunflower seeds, because after a good toasting, the hull will be crunchy like chips!

Not carving a pumpkin?  You can buy roasted pumpkin seeds, a.k.a. pepitas, but most sold in stores do not have the hull.  No worries, because they’re still delicious!  Pumpkin seeds are a great way to add a punch of protein to your salad or trail mix to help build muscles and provide healthy skin and nails.

The flesh is the part of the pumpkin where all of that trademark flavor can be found.  Most pumpkin pies use canned pumpkin, but with the abundance of pumpkins during this season, there’s no reason not to use something fresh…and healthy.  No matter how you prepare it, this orange fruit will give you a good dose of Vitamin A to help with your vision.  Try pumpkin on your plate in these different ways:

  • Mash it up.  Boil or roast the fruit and mash it up.  For the sweeter flavor, add cinnamon and honey, but for something savory, chives and lemon would satisfy the taste buds.
  • Throw it in the blender.  Puree roasted pumpkin with some broth and a little bit of cream for a comforting soup.
  • Use it to fill you up.  Pumpkin makes a great filling for anything from ravioli to tamales!
  • Sauté up some flavor.  Cook the fruit with some butter and herbs and serve with your favorite grain.  Pumpkins taste great as the main course.
  • Bake some bread.  Pumpkin bread has all the flavor of pumpkin pie, except you can eat it for breakfast and not feel guilty.

Now, you might want to trade in your carving knife for a chef’s knife!  How do you like your pumpkin, pumpkins?

M.I.S.S. Healthy Bites: Reasons for the Season

A cornucopia of fresh fall foods

A cornucopia of fresh fall foods

As the seasons change, your wardrobe goes through a metamorphosis.  You exchange your summer gear for the latest fall trends, which usually have a different color, texture, and weight than the previous season.  We adopt most styles because of the changes in weather, well, because who would want to wear open-toed sandals on a raining October morning?!  The same principle can be applied to what you eat.  Some seasons are perfect for specific fruits and vegetables, while eating some fruit during an off-season can be quite a nutrition faux pas. Keep that in mind, fashionistas, and change your diet as you change your closet.  Transform yourself into a nutritionista, looking good on the outside and feeling even better within!

With all the fancy advancements in technology, we can eat whatever we want, whenever we want it.  Quite spoiled, aren’t we?  While it might be refreshing to have fresh strawberries in the fall, the reality is, those strawberries are off-season.  Different plants require different amounts of light and warmth to grow and fruit properly, and when you don’t have that perfect equation, you just end up with tasteless filler.  Farmers have the ability to play Mother Nature and create conditions, like hothouses, to grow off-season foods, but it will never be as good as the real thing.  Ever had a tomato in the winter?  With the horrible color and flavorless fruit, it doesn’t even deserve to be called a tomato!  Foods grown during their correct season have their full flavor, making it more enjoyable to eat healthy.  Plus, seasonal food may be healthier as they can contain more nutrients.  Plants loses nutrients when they are picked, and foods picked early for transportation aren’t as good as fruits and veggies ripened the good old fashioned, natural way.

Aside from taste and nutrition, another major downfall of eating off-season is that it’s expensive! You’ll be paying a lot more for those strawberries because it takes so much to grow them and transport them from lands far away.  If you eat seasonally, there is so much to harvest that local farmers can sell at lower prices.  Any way to save money and eat fresh, healthy food is the way to go.

Eating in season pays off, and it keeps life exciting.  You might be excited for your favorite designer’s upcoming collection, but it’s equally as exciting to know that your favorite fruit will be on your plate soon.  That’s because eating in season builds anticipation for the next harvest, which also means a refreshing change in your diet.  Just like how you might be dying to wear your favorite winter coat again, you can also look forward to eating delicious citrus too!  There is so much variety each season, make sure to be in the know so you’ll eat what’s best for you, for your wallet, and for the planet.

Ready to dive into the autumn harvest?  Go to your local farmer’s market to see what’s in season in your area.  You’ll be happy to see some of these on the stands:

  • Pumpkin
  • Kiwi
  • Sweet Potato
  • Apples
  • Butternut Squash
  • Eggplant
  • Pears
  • And so much more!

Signing up for a CSA box will also be a great way to get seasonal, local, and organic food from the farm to the kitchen.  If only designers offered a box like that….hmmmm…..

But what about that top of yours that looks good any time of year?  There are fruits and vegetables that grow all-year long without a compromise in nutrients or flavor, but there’s always that one time of year when they’re at the peak.  Wondering what those foods can be?  I think I’ll build more anticipation and save that for later!

MadeMe Fall 09 Drop: Tough Love!

The "Tough Love" Fall 09 Drop from MadeMe

The "Tough Love" Fall 09 Drop from MadeMe

When I think of what is iconically sexy, sure, images such as a poised and perfect Jackie O, or a prim and proper Audrey Hepburn, are in the back of my mind. But, more in the forefront is the image of an icon who, as cliche as may be, was really one of the first to challenge the society’s concept of a “lady”– Madonna. From her virginal debut on the 80s scene complete with lacy leggings and Suddenly Susan motorcycle jacket, to her bondage-tinged 90s  Erotica phase, and her current roller-derby inspired look, Madonna has always pushed the envelope, and garnered a lot of respect along the way.

No one knows this better than designer Erin Magee-Albino, the creative brainchild behind NYC label Made Me. A longtime fan of the singer (Erin even has Madonna’s likeness tattood on her!), Made Me’s new Fall 09 collection, appropirately dubbed “Tough Love”, embodies the same spirit of challenging the convention of what sexy really is.

The Leather Rose-Print jacket is already a favorite with stylists like Radio Rose Garcia and performers like Nina Sky!

The Leather Rose-Print jacket is already a favorite with stylists like Radio Rose Garcia and performers like Nina Sky!

Inspired by androgyny and NYC street sensibility, the collection features traditionally masculine silhouettes in feminine fits, such as the stand-out piece, a butta soft leather motorcycle jacket covered with a beautiful rose print. A studded denim vest is just as tough girl in feel, perfect for layering over the brand’s statement tees and cozy-looking flannels. Erin’s personal favorite piece of the collection–which conveniently enough happens to be mine as well– is a rich grey T, embellished with a ton of intricate cut outs, giving it a hole-effect that is nothing short of simply bad ass! It’s rare that a line so perfectly matches attitude with aesthetic, but this fall Made Me’s delived a sublime collection I am LOVIN’ already!

Channel your inner Madge this fall, get sexy and get tough! Made Me’s Tough Love drops today, so go out and cop these pieces on their website before they sell out!

There is something so naughty and nice about the AW 09/10 LUTZ by Robert Clergerie collection.  Those innocent rounded toes and wingtip details paired with platforms, ankle straps and stacked heels speak both to my inner “nice lady” AND my dare devil fashion vixen.  After the success of the SS09 collection these two design houses have come together once again for a limited edition shoe collection. This collection draws inspiration from a shoe classic: the traditional derby shoe and are available in the following color-ways: black, black & navy, black & brown and black & grey.

The three models available are crafted out of the finest leather with the utmost attention to detail. The knee high boots are constructed to hug your leg, made from a “silky” stretch calf-skin. All styles feature details from the traditional derby shoe: perforated markings and a decorative toecap having a point that extends toward the wearer. These details paired with the high, chunky heel and platform wedge are are MUST for this Fall.
