Boston.com is one of my most visited sites hands down. Probably because the photos are remarkably clear and with all of the reading I do on a daily basis, I just don’t feel like thinking. I just want to look at photograph and feel.
It’s the season of Fashion Week, from Bryant Park in New York last week to London this week, and Milan, Los Angeles and Tokyo next month. As designers and their models gather to present their newest collections to the world, photographers are on hand to take thousands of pictures, most during the actual show – with a few photos from the backstage of each show sent across the wires as well.

“Two Four looks at four decades of Latina culture through collected photographs and ephemera from the archive of life long 24th Street/Mission resident Sandy Cuadra as well as through preserved archival footage of the neighborhood from the 70s and 80s collected by Veronica Majano and the Mission Film Archive”. – Clare Haggarty(curator).
“Two-Four Home Girls, Circa 1980” The Tiny Locas, “You and I” dances, and the Low-rider cars represented rites of passage and the social scene for teenage girls in the early 1980’s in the 24th Street Mission neighborhood. The exhibition features photographs by Sandy Cuadra- a former Tiny Loca who has lived in the
Mission for over 30 years- memories of dancing, cars, parties in the park, and tight friendships. In addition, footage from the Mission Film Archive (thanks to filmmaker Vero Majano) further activates the world of Low-riders and the “You and I” dances. Vintage posters to promote those dances, made by Mitchell Salazar, also hang in the gallery, and complete this nostalgic look into a particular period in the Mission that speaks to the former teenager in all of us.

Giant Robot is pleased to host a rare U.S. appearance by Tosa Novmichi at GR2. Tosa is half of the legendary Japan-based Maywa Denki music and art duo that creates its own ingenious and otherworldly instruments. In addition to touring and playing sold-out rock concerts around the world with their pneumatic, electronic, automated, and conceptual music devices, they create some of the world’s most interesting and interactive toys. Following the footsteps of the popular Knockman family (centered on the eponymous, wind-up figure that knocks its own head like a drum) comes the Otamatone. The piece looks like a musical note and plays like a Theremin. Fans of electronic music, cool toys, and otaku culture from Japan will not want to miss Tosa’s personal demonstration of the toy.

Legendary artist Yoshitaka Amano will make a rare U.S. appearance with his newest exhibit, DEVA LOKA, created especially for a U.S exhibition and named for the ancient Indian land of God. Amano is widely acclaimed for his work in animation and video games. He is renowned for designing the characters for the hit video game, Final Fantasy, as well as for anime films including Vampire Hunter D, Guin Saga, Final Fantasy, and Front Mission. “Between the late 60’s and the 70’s, and during my early years in the art world, I was greatly influenced by American comic books and pop culture. I’d like to show my gratitude for the inspiration America gave me with this exhibit. With the theme of DEVA LOKA, all of my concepts and influences are able to come together, centered in one place. In a career spanning 27 years, RISK has impacted the evolution of graffiti as an art form in Los Angeles and worldwide. RISK gained major notoriety for his unique style and pushed the limits of graffiti further than any writer in L.A. had before: He was one of the first writers in Southern California to paint freight trains, and he pioneered writing on “heavens,” or freeway overpasses. At the peak of his career he took graffiti from the streets and into the gallery with the launch of the Third Rail series of art shows, and later parlayed the name into the first authentic line of graffiti-inspired clothing.
Before he’d ever heard of graffiti, RISK was unconsciously writing it. As a kid, he filled sketchbook after sketchbook with images, not just of people and things but of letters too. He even had spray paint in his hand before ever applying it to a wall, using it to paint BMX bikes. “Even back then I think I was addicted to spray paint,” he recalls. “I just loved painting with it.”
Visit RISK’s limited-edition print series just released at www.riskrock.com. Each screen print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Now in its 6th year, this revolutionary art tour, designed to expose established and emerging artists and their work to audiences across the country, kicked off 2010 in Los Angeles and now moves on to Austin, TX. The tour focuses on the video medium, which emerged in the 1960s and has since expanded galleries into more experimental, kinetic and interactive spaces. “Installation 6: Video” challenged 10 artists to create non-narrative video installations that will eventually transform five unique exhibitions around the country.

Your work has an obvious Dios de Los Muertos look. Why this theme? The CaliLOVE show is inspired by Dia De Los Muertos and really came together in October of ‘09 when my homegirl Mayra Ramirez curated a show at 510 Studio in Oakland and asked me to be apart of it. The line up she organized was ridiculous. Mike Giant, Miguel Bounce Perez, and Angel Diaz were some of the artists showing so I knew I had to step my game up. So, I recruited my talented friends Jenni Tay to do makeup and Justin Downs to do the hair and we set out to create 3 new portraits for the show. The images were well received so when I got the confirmation that I’d be showing at Upper Playground in Sacramento, I decided to continue on with the series. Thus far, I’ve shot 11 new images for the show.Check out our newest venture that all of our favs (y’all!) can be involved in: M.I.S.S. Flickr

“I don’t mean to scare you,” I said to her, “but you’re going to be a star; a SuperStar.” Bold words from the infamous Ricky Powell said to NYC based artist TooFly (Juxtapoz #109). If her feature in our current February 2010 issue isn’t enough for you, take a look at the personal side of miss TooFly in our Back Talk feature.
Today, I feel:
Cold. It’s freezing in NY. I don’t like the cold weather it makes everything around me feel stagnant. Sometimes it’s good because I finally get some peace, but I really, really miss the sunshine!!
If you had three wishes, what would they be?
1. To live in harmony with nature.
2. Peace.
3. An honest government who cares for people, and quality of life for all.
Do you consider yourself a funny person?
I don’t mean to be, but my friends think I’m pretty silly when I say things sometimes that come out all wrong.
If you had one magic power, what would it be?
To FLY. That way I can reach high spots to paint, and flow freely towards natural landscapes when I need to escape the daily city grind.
Something that makes you happy?
I get happy when others are happy. It’s pretty contagious when we can all get down for it.
Something that makes you mad?
Ignorance.
What was your favorite subject in elementary school?
Art. I used to get excused from class to paint the auditorium walls in school! That was fun.
If you feel a creative block, what do you do to jumpstart inspiration?
I research. I go into my files of inspiration and gather ideas to get my thoughts to flow more easily.
When someone is taking a photo, do you smile for the camera or turn your head?
I crack a smile : )
Are you a social network enthusiast?
Yup. I dig it. I like to share. I keep up with most of my networking sites when I have some down time. It’s another world where folks on an international level can get info on my exhibits, new product releases, and inside scoop. Most are public but some are not. I like to keep it positive. If your negative and have nothing better to do with your life, I will block you.
What is a quality you don’t like about yourself?
I get shy sometimes, and I hate it.
Last good book you read?
The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying.
Who has had the most impact on your life?
My Mom. She’s DOPE! For all the great values she instilled in me that have transferred into everything I do. The choices I make, the people I surround myself with, and the things I enjoy doing. She’s given me great life gifts.
Are you spiritual?
Yea. I dig the universal wayz, and cause and effect laws of life. As long as you do things with good intentions that love will spread to give you, others, and the world around you many blessings.
One word to describe your artwork?
Fluid.
What’s missing in your life?
Not much, maybe some kids.
Are you a pet person?
Yea. Only dogs though. Not much of a cat person or any other little creature…
Is your artwork understood?
Someone actually made it very clear to me today that it is ; )
The most trouble you’ve ever gotten into:
Stealing a lipstick from Woolsworth when I was 15.
Where do you imagine yourself in five years?
In my first home, digging the ground to make a garden, and helping my grandpa build a shack outside for a creative art & design room.

Hey my ladies and gents, but LADIES FIRST! Don’t have plans for NYE? Seriously think about this event, I’m not sure what the male to woman ratio will be or if there will be lookers (I say yes because of the “fixed gear heads”), just know that the following
D-Structure is synonymous with ‘art parties’, events, and fashion, though this NYE (sans confetti) will be superb, plus much more than your traditional toasting flutes of carbonated distilled beverages. We’re presenting you with entire audio-visual-physiological experience – destined to leave permanent impressions etched in your memory banks, and worthy of telling your unborn children about.
Right when you come in, treat yourself to our open bar sponsored by Natures Mistake. Then you’ll be titillated with a stimulating exhibition of custom designed toys from Project 218 – a collective of some of the most dynamic artists and illustrators in the field. Accompanying the exhibit, Sorrow UM will be store fronting his brush strokes on highly motivated canvases, Allee will be gift-giving to all of you bicycle & fixed gear heads, while TEEKO and Max Kane ( 4OneFunk / F.R.E.S.H. {Fresh Analog Music Experience}) violently rock you & yours with a GHETTOBLASTER from Nature’s Mistake.

Artist/ gallery curator David “Netherland” van Alphen lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. Though David’s family was from Holland, he was born in Toronto, and has been in Chicago for the last eight years. Being a child of the 70’s has influenced him greatly and is reflected in most of his work. Juxtaposing images, his color choices and the new modern context comes through his nostalgic imagery and helps to isolate and enhance them into a beautiful montage. David does not resize, photocopy or scan any of the images he uses. All images are cut directly from their original source and and pieced together to keep each piece unique. David has shown at many galleries throughout the U.S. and sold out his first solo show in January 2008.
If interested, visit Alphen’s site Netherland Art for more art and online store.

“The basis of my work is speaking about the coldness and competitiveness present in people. I like to be ironic about individuality and death, and the paths in which to reach or escape these themes. I find it funny when I walk on the streets and see people with their eyes open but dead inside. This makes me think and wonder if I’m still alive.”

DOUBLE EXPOSURE (two): Balanced Roles is an exhibition with five bay area artist-slash-curators who work within their respective residential spaces. Participating artists are Chris McCaw of 31 Rausch, Brion Nuda Rosch of Hallway Projects, Lena Reynoso of The Compound, Kari Marboe of MG Gallery, and Naaman Rosen of WE Space. The criteria for selection of these artists incorporates the idea of the expanding role of the artist in the community, and the use of residential spaces as a place to make art more accessible. Being surrounded by beautiful people who are CRAZY and are willing to do wild things.
How does color impact your work?
Zzzzzzzzz. I haven’t slept in dayzzzzzz. I don’t know how to answer this question.
You’ve traveled on tour with the SF based band Girls. How has the process of shooting for band affected your personal work?
I went from being nobody to being published everywhere.

Jesse rules for dealing with my 8:30 am melt downs, and he has a great eye.

Not particularly, I’m just on my period a lot.

Originally from Denmark. Torkil Gundason approaches photography with a no-nonsense, Scandanavian sensibility. His style is simple and graphic. He prefers shooting in color in order to play various hues off one another. When asked to list three things he cannot live without as a photographer, his answer is appropriately succinct: light, light and light.
As a ten-year-old boy, Torkil received his first camera, a Bolex super-8. His first pictures were of a trip to Italy, which is where, many years later, Torkil would find his first success as an emerging fashion photographer.
Torkil’s photography has appeared in Vogue, Maybelline, Pantene, MAC Cosmetics, L’Oreal, Piaget, Guerlain, Shiseido, Estee Lauder, Calvin Klein and Bergdorf Goodman.

From views of an abandoned Staten Island ferry terminal to the deteriorating Coney Island Cyclone, Thomas documents urban scenes that while outwardly static, show a city in perpetual transition. The presence of previous inhabitants lingers heavily within each frame, like dinner plates that have recently been cleared away.
Like a Surrealist flaneur, Thomas explores the complex tension between absence and presence in his dreamlike outer landscapes. Devoid of human figures, his images of winding alleyways, imposing monuments and gleaming mist-filled harbors veer off at random into psychological terrain. Using a custom large-format camera and Polaroid film, he has created a nebulous archive of our collective inner longings.
Born in Germany in 1961, Christopher Thomas has worked for magazines such as Geo, Stern, Merian, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin. He has produced numerous photo essays and received international awards for commercial and fine art photography. He lives and works in Munich and New York.

mmortalizing the people and moments that have defined the past 60 years, world-renowned photojournalist Harry Benson has become as much a part of history as the photographs themselves. The scope of his accomplishments as a photojournalist is nothing short of remarkable: he has photographed every US president since Eisenhower, as well as Robert F. Kennedy on the night he was assassinated, and Martin Luther King Jr. at his funeral; he has shot stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Mick Jagger, Dolly Parton, Michael Jackson, Greta Garbo, and Truman Capote; he covered both the rise and fall of the Berlin wall, the IRA hunger strikes, the Freedom March through Mississippi, the Watts riots, 9/11, and conflicts in Kuwait, Bosnia, Somalia, Afghanistan, Israel, and the West Bank; and, on the eve of his eightieth birthday, Benson is still at it, crisscrossing the globe on assignment for Condé Nast.
