Boy Meets Girl: Summer 09

You know when your clothing is featured on shows like Gossip Girl, Sex & the City, America’s Next Top Model, and The Hills you’re onto a good thing.  Further proof that things are on the up would be having your clothes worn by the likes of Eva Mendes, Rachel Bilson, Mischa Barton, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.  So it’s safe to say that Boy Meets Girl founder/designer Stacy Morgenstern Igel is doing pretty well for herself!  This Lady kinda makes me feel like an underachiever – she triple-majored in Fashion Design, Retail and Business (I’m flat-out just doing one!) and then single-handedly built her company from the ground up.

Boy Meets Girls is all about “comfortable clothes that make you feel happy and sexy,” with a variety of inspiration taken from 1920’s Hollywood icons, to the music and art scene of downtown NY.  Great for girly-girls and tomboys alike, pieces range from sporty-casual to sleek and sexy – a lot of the time a mix of the two.

The Summer ‘09 range screams simple sophistication with some slight preppyness, while managing to stay coy and playful at the same time – sounds like an impossible combo I know! Taking a step away from the sportiness of their Spring drop, the current line is a mix of playsuits, simple tees and tanks, and some cute dresses perfect for both day and night. The colour palette consists of a lot of black, with splashes of neon tangerine, mushroom pink, and grey. The beauty of such simple pieces is how you can either throw them on and walk out the door or pile on the accessories (and then walk out the door). Looking over the collection I had a hard time selecting images as I pretty much loved everything (a rare thing for me) - pick up any of these and you’ll be snapping necks in no time! Banned From TV: Calvin Klein Jeans Ad

Calvin Klein is known for controversy. From it’s ads featuring a young teenage Brooke Shields, a young Kate Moss, and a scantily clad Eva Mendes, Calvin Klein has a history of being banned and censored. Their newest Calvin Klein jeans ad is sharing the same fate - it’s been banned from TV - even late night cable TV. It seems it’s too steamy for us but you can watch it here.  The ad was shot by Steven Meisel and has a very grainy look to it and you can’t help but feel like a voyeur as you watch it. I’m beginning to think CK makes their ads with the intent of them being banned - I think they may get more hype and notoriety that way.  Whatever it is, it definitely makes an impression.

Golden Globe Awards Fashion: Loves, WTFs? & Trends

I was one of the many, many people glued to their TVs to see what the celebrities (and their stylists) decided they should wear to the Golden Globe Awards.  There were gorgeous gowns, dazzling jewels and coiffed coifs.  Dior seemed to score big with many leading ladies wearing gowns by John Galliano for Dior.  But the biggest trend of the night was in the hair category - so many bangs in face!  I didn’t mind it, more annoying was the constant moving of the hair from the face.  As usual, there were the people that looked great, and people who I just looked at and wondered:  “Really, you have THAT much money and THAT much access to couture and diamonds and THAT’S the best you could do?”  One of my favorite looks of the night was Susan Sarandan in a black tux paired with a corset and long diamond necklaces.  Here’s a brief breakdown of my favorites, trends, and WTFs?

2 Favorite Dresses (minus the silly expressions):

Evan Rachel Wood in Elie Saab & Kate Beckinsdale in J. Mendel

It comes as no surprise that 2 of my favorite dresses would be black and white.  Wood’s dress is evocative of Chanel to me and is glamorous and age appropriate and a good choice for an award’s show.  Beckinsdale’s dress was my favorite of the night for pure dramatic effect.  The neckline was gorgeous and she carried it beautifully.  I didn’t love her earrings but she was smart in skipping the necklace and going with big earrings.  I hate when people feel like they need to junk up their decolletage in a strapless dress with a necklace.

3 more favorites:

Kate Winslet in YSL, Eva Mendes in Dior, Maggie Gyllenhaal in Lanvin

I love Kate Winslet - she’s smart, funny, strong and a “Dame” in the making.  Her choice in dress reflected her personality - it was sleek, sophisticated and strong.  Eva Mendes was beautiful in Dior (though I was surprised she wasn’t in Calvin Klein - you know, the perfume deal . . .) and her necklace was pretty though I don’t know if I loved them together.  And Maggie Gyllenhaal looked fresh, young and independent in her Lanvin gown.  I thought all 3 ladies had nice hairstyles - I’m a big fan of up-dos for fancy occasions and their coiffs were modern and not stuffy at all.

The Spirit: My City Screams

The Spirit
Frank Miller, the creator of Sin City is coming out with a new movie this Christmas called The Spirit: My City Screams, based on the classic comic strip created by Will Eisner called The Spirit. I’m really excited about the release of this movie and I can’t wait to see it. The story is a classic good v. evil flick (with Samuel L. Jackson as the “bad guy”) and it’s chock full of some good old fashioned femme fatales including Eva Mendes, Scartett Johansson, Jaime King and Sarah Paulson. What I love about this film already (and one of the reasons why I loved Sin City) is the way that it’s filmed. Frank Miller brings comics to life in a way that doesn’t make it look juvenile. His use of color is beautiful and I can watch all day just to see the color pop against a back drop of black, gray and white. Though the film isn’t slated to release until December of this year, the website has lots of cool features including trailers, downloads and other interactive activities. Check out more trailers and posters after the jump . . .

Calvin’s “Secret Obsession” Is Too Risqué

Calvin Klein is used to causing a ruckus in media - whether it was a 16 year old Brooke Shields proclaiming that nothing came between her and her Calvins, or a very young, nude Kate Moss giving birth to heroin chic. The latest in his misadventures in advertising relate to his newest fragrance Secret Obsession featuring Eva Mendes (read the original post we did here). The controversy lies around the ad campaign and commercial which is apparently too risqué because of a glimpse of a bit of Ms. Mendes’ nipple - gasp!! I’ve always thought the “nipple controversy” was always a bit of a silly one. Men have nipples - they are shirtless all the time. If we just looked at each other as people, rather than making women into sex objects, this maybe wouldn’t be a big deal and we’d just see it as another part of anatomy. It’s a bit sad because the commercial is actually very tasteful and not at all in poor taste or pornographic. Perhaps we should be more concerned with what “we” (ahem, the Christian right) read into things - I believe that tells us more about ourselves than anything else.

Here’s the commercial - view it - share it - show the world:

(sorry about the ad at the end - it was the only video I could find)

P.S. - This controversy has gotten leagues of people in an uproar about our nation’s politics (finally!). While I don’t agree we need a PG version of this ad, it’s really disappointing that it takes something like this to critique the government while men and women serving our country are dying daily. There - I said it.

Calvin Klein’s New Scent: Secret Obsession

I’ve always loved perfume. It’s always been one of those things that I’ve associated with “being a lady”, probably because I remember my mom always putting it on and I always thought that was a very glamorous thing to do. As soon as I was old enough, I started wearing perfume. I was still pretty young, so my mom started me out on Love’s Baby Soft. Then I had all 5 or 6 flavors of Love’s (yes, they had a rainbow, lemon, orange, blue, etc). Then, it was Exclamation! When I was in about 9th or 10th grade though, I had enough of the “young” fragrances and was ready for my first real adult perfume. What did I chose? Obsession. Yep, I wore it all through high school, and I was border-line “obsessed” with the smell. I loved the musky undertones, the deep amber color of the scent and the oval-shaped bottle. I’ve stopped wearing it since then but I will always have a special place in my heart for my first fragrance. Today, I discovered that Calvin Klein is releasing an update of the fragrance called Secret Obsession and it brought back lots of aroma-filled memories.
secret obsession calvin klein
Secret Obsession is not trying to be Obsession, rather, it’s a unique scent: It “has top notes of exotic plum, mace and rose de damas; a heart of Egyptian jasmine, French orange flower and tuberose, and base notes of cashmere woods, burnt amber, Madagascan vanilla and Australian sandalwood.” When asked to describe the difference between the two Obsessions, Michele Scannavini, president of Coty Prestige, stated: “While Obsession epitomized the overt glamour and sexuality of the Eighties, Secret Obsession will become the meaning of what is sexy today — more personal, sophisticated and intoxicating.” Eva Mendes will be the face of Secret Obsession, as well as the Calvin Klein lingerie line for fall. Secret Obsession launches in mid-September, but you can expect to see the racy ads (did you expect anything less from the people that gave you a very young, nude “heroin chic” Kate Moss??) in June. I’m a signature-scent kind of girl but I think I may have to go astray and pick up this new grown and sexy version of Obsession. Can’t wait!
