It may be summer, but black is and will always scream classic chic, which is why Comme des Garçons, dropping its new line “Black” at Dover Street Market on June 18th, is exactly what the fashion doc prescribed for the summer: a gorgeous dose of black to rein in the beautiful cacophony of summer colors.

Japanese fashion label Comme des Garçons, was founded in 1969 by Rei Kawakubo, who then expanded her artistic expression to create DSM, an eclectic department store, situated in London, housing the funkiest styles. Many respected designers’ apparel, perfumes and wallets are showcased there; Boudicca, Raf Simons, Junya Watanabe, Giles Deacon and Luella Bartley to name a few. With surreal art displayed on each of the impressive six floors of this fashion house, expect to be blown away, and even to pick up some creative vibes of your own as you sift the plethora of fashion goods before you.

“Black” is a collection of t-shirts, hoodies, Bearbrick metal jewelry and Comme des Garçons’ iconic styles (best selling, out of the ordinary silhouettes, prints of checkerboard, polka dots and gingham etc.) in black to celebrate CDG’s 40th anniversary. The collection is already available in two Tokyo department stores, and in other shops across Asia. On June 22nd, a freestanding “Black” store will open in New York located at 10th Avenue and 17th Street in Chelsea, and it will also be available for purchase at Barneys on June 22nd for two weeks. Paris is also a happy camper, as it will receive the gift of “Black”, albeit for a limited time. Kawakubo’s creation has already garnered a staggering number of addicts; we expect big things for the upcoming launches! It’s available for only 18 months, so get to purchasing and rocking your timeless black gear.

I love it when Dover Street Market updates their windows and spaces - they have a flair for making truly unique spaces that are borderline theatrical.  Each space is created and focused on displaying featured products in a way that highlights their beauty, as well as their artistic qualities.  The window features a giant sculptural black octopus by Les Trois Garçons and new spaces include Nowhere (where Bape was born), Lanvin, Loewe, and Stephen Jones.  Read the full story for photos of the spaces and a description of what makes them oh, so special!

A few months back we let you know about an upcoming fragrance project between Comme des Garçons and milliner Stephen Jones.  The fragrance, has just launched and is available at Dover Street Market in London and online.  The packaging is amazing and takes it’s cue from hat packaging - the ribbon, the netting, the box - all inspired by hat boxes.  I love how everything is so inky black. I haven’t smelled the fragrance yet, but the packaging alone is reason enough to get this - especially for those who collect perfume bottles.  The scent is violet meets meteorite (yes, the outer space kind) and to read more about the fragrance notes check here.  Pictures from the store installation after the jump.

Comme des Garçons PLAY shirts are available on the Dover Street Market E-Shop for the first time every! Yay for Play!  I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these!  Happy Shopping!

London emporium Dover Street Market has recently updated its window and added some new spaces featuring Lanvin, Salvatore Ferragamo, Yves Saint Laurent, Henry Holland and Hussein Chalayan. The Ferragamo space showcases 80 years of archive pieces from the Creations Collection by Salvatore Ferragamo - so exciting!

Yves Saint Laurent opens its first ever stand-alone “Edition 24″ space at Dover Street Market in a space designed by the renowned theatrical set designer Michael Howells. New Autumn/Winter ‘08-’09 designs are highlighted in the Lanvin, Henry Holland and Hussein Chayalan spaces. One of the more interesting spaces is One Plus One Eve Democracy - Medical Vintage, a new collaboration space featuring Christian Lacroix Haute Couture and Katerina Jebb’s personal vintage collection. Finally, one of the newest additions to DSM is the jewelry line of Tom Binns. His first collection, “Pearls in Peril” is the first of many collections that will be exclusive to Dover Street Market and I love what I’ve seen. Think tons of pearls layered with even more faux-diamond jewels. It’s a little bit drunken prom queen - but in a good way. For the first time ever, Chanel will be available at Dover Street Market and feature limited edition pieces, as well as a selection of iconic pieces from the Chanel collection. The Chanel products are showcased in ephemeral boutiques on five of the six floors, showcasing an edited selection of Ready to Wear, accessories, and shoes from the unique Metiers d’Arts Paris-Londres Collection. Chanel will be available at Dover Street Market beginning today through June 25th. I especially love the Karl Lagerfeld cut-outs in the boutique - I want one!! Unfortunately, I don’t think they are for sale.

Dover Street Market does it again. They just released some amazing new product that I’m sure folks will be clamoring for including a DSM x Kaws t-shirt, Comme des Garçons Tartan Wallets and the iconic Lewis Leather Motorcycle Jackets re-fabricated in unusual and interesting woven fabrics. As usual, many of these products are exclusive to DSM so you can either get some of the stuff online or you’ll have to go to London town.

Dover Street Market is one of my favorite boutiques in the world. Yes, it’s that amazing. How could it not be? It’s the brain child of Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons fame. One of the cool things about DSM is the space and how it’s laid out. There are 6 floors and each have their own theme and the spaces within each floor are being constantly updated. DSM recently revamped 2 sections: Lanvin by Alber Elbaz and the Bookspace: “Opposition: British Alternative Culture of the 1980’s,” by Angela Hill. They’ve also updated their shop with new product from Number (N)ine, Undercover, Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony, Rodarte, Comme des Garçons, Comme des Garçons Homme Plus, Junya Watanabe, Junya Watanabe MAN, Tao Comme des Garçons, Comme des Garçons Homme Deux, Ganryu, Christopher Kane, Sara Lanzi, Gareth Pugh, Marios Schwab and Toga. Impressive line-up if I ever saw one. If you’re not in London now, be sure to make a mental note about DSM - this is a definite must-see for any London trip.

Comme des Garçons has always killed it in the retail department whether it’s with their pop-up Guerilla stores or the Dover Street Market. Now, in celebration of the press launch of the new Comme des Garçons 8 88 Perfume, CDG has announced the opening of the Comme des Garçons 8 88 Pre View Shop until the 8th of December. The store will have 2 levels: Upstairs you’ll find a limited number of 8 88 Fragrance, T-Shirts and Candles only available there for this week. Downstairs will feature rare vintage CDG Parfum T-Shirts and collector CDG Parfums, all from Comme des Garçons and all at £20!! What a steal!! The 8 88 Fragrance, t-shirts and cancles will launch in regular shops worldwide in February / March 2008 so if you want it first you have until December 8th to get it.Comme des Garçons 8 885 Burlington ArcadeLondon W1From 1.00pm on 29th November to 8th December, then closed for ever.

Dover Street Market is one of the most amazing stores I’ve been to. Created by Rei Kawakubo, designer and founder of Comme des Garcons, the store features 6 floors - all distinct - that house small enclaves of product by featured designers. You’ll find lots of Comme des Garcons there, as well as all affilitated projects but you’ll also find Lanvin, Azzedine Alaia, L’Wren Scott and much much more. The shop, it’s product and it’s displays are so well curated you sometimes forget you’re there to shop and not in a museum. Dover Street just updated some of it’s spaces. If you’re in London, it’s a definite must see. If not, you can check out the e-shop to get a glimpse of the real deal.
