Style Coalition Presents: Fashion 2.0 Social Media Awards

I started Fashion Week by attending the Fashion 2.0 Social Media Awards hosted by Style Coalition. I picked up my media pass for Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, and also dropped by The Cherry Lounge at The W hotel for the kickoff event to (what I am sure will be) a crazy week. The event was the first annual one of its kind, and after a brief cocktail hour, attendees gathered around a podium to hear the results of several “best of” categories nominated by thousands of bloggers and social media experts alike (to see nominees, follow the link to the Style Coalition site). The sponsors were Ideeli, L’Oreal, Lucky Magazine, and the Style Coalition. Among the presenters was Yuli Ziv, blogger and co-founder of Fashion 2.0 NYC Meet-up, and she announced a few of the following award winners of the evening:

Best Online Video: Chanel Coco in Motion
Best Twitter Acount: @DKNY
Best Facebook Fan page: Coach
Best Blog by a Designer or Brand: Free People
Best web site: Kate Spade
The “Next Big Thing” in Social Media: Foursquare
Best Innovator: Burberry

The event was a great excuse to network, and savvy bloggers were Tweeting all during the event through hashtag #fash20awards. Check out what the people said about the evening on Twitter!

Although the swag bags were close to 10 pounds, they were chock full or L’Oreal cosmetics, coupons, a Lucky magazine and planner. I can’t wait to see who is in the running next year (hint, hint, www.missomnimedia.com)!

M.I.S.S. NYFW: Donna Karan New York & DKNY Spring 2010 RTW

Donna Karan Spring 2010 RTW Collection

Donna Karan’s Spring 2010 RTW collection was “inspired by the power of the elements: sky, water, wind, sand, earth, and fire” and it certainly showed. Models appeared to have clothes float across and caress their body in a minimal but highly wearable color palette of grey, blush, white and red.

The collection featured soft skirtsuits and draped dresses that were classically inspired, but had a modern edge.  Elements of surprise were built into the dresses, as sheer panels revealed just enough of the curve of the model’s arms and legs to entice viewers, while ingenious and meticulous draping leaves an intense impression coming and going.

There wasn’t much about this collection that I didn’t like. The draping and fabric choices are exquisite and the design of every piece allows your body to be the star of the show. Crinkled linens, sheer gauzes and matte jerseys are twisted, fitted and draped to gracefully accentuate the many beautiful curves of a woman’s body, from her shoulders down to her ankles. The inspired color palette lets your natural skin tone to be the ultimate accessory.  You can’t wear these pieces and not feel sexy, sophisticated, feminine and of course fashionable!

Launched in 1989, DKNY continues to be the standard bearer for secondary and contemporary collections worldwide. Living up to the branding, “It’s not just about clothes. It’s about a lifestyle,” the Spring 2010 RTW collection, “City in Bloom,” features neutrals, greys, pinks, reds and black set against florals, camos and graffiti prints that are both urban and feminine.

There’s something for everyone in this collection: dresses, cuffed shorts, pegged pants, suits, rompers, skirts and bathing suits were all featured on the runway in bright, but not overwhelming colors. There’s enough print, color and attitude for the pieces to remain staples in your own collection long after spring has passed.

Perhaps the most surprising (and I’m sure there will be critics who scoff at the very idea) addition to the DKNY Spring collection was the appearance of Smoothies, a glammed up name for what the masses used to call biker shorts. Flashes of pink, black and neutral all showed up underneath shorts, rompers and shifts on the runway. While it remains to be seen just how consumers respond to this shorter alternative to leggings and tights, the funky fusion of florals, bold colors and graffiti prints that are at the heart of the collection will surely find a welcome home in many wardrobes this year.

Eyes To The Sky: Get Classic This Fall. The Camel Coat.

Eyes To The Sky: Get Classic This Fall. The Camel Coat.

Like a white button up shirt or a little black dress, the Camel coat is a classic that will always be en vogue. A true camel coat is made of the hair of the two humped Bactrian camel. In terms of fashion these days a “Camel Coat” refers more so to the color of the coat. Yes, Camel hair coats are still made and often times the Camel hair is blend with other fibers like wool. But for the sake of this entry, let’s focus on that warm “Camel” hue and add this one to your list of Fall “Must Haves”. Sticking to a classic silhouette is probably best for fashion longevity’s sake…the Louis Vuitton version done my Marc might be of the moment come Fall 09 but the broad over-sized shoulders might not find it’s way back for a few seasons…or ten. Wrap yourself in Chloe or belt yourself tight…whatever you do, jump on the hump(s) this Fall.

Ears to the Street: S.uper S.exy S.urfer S.tyle. Bring the Surf to your Turf.

S.uper S.exy S.urfer S.tyle

S.uper S.exy S.urfer S.tyle

When I was about 8 years-old I wandered into the local skate/surf shop. I instantly spied Mr. Zog’s Sex Wax and curious as I was I asked what it was for. The shop worker smiled and replied “It’s for your stick”. O.M.G. you can only imagine the confusion in my little mind.

So, I never took up surfing but since the day’s of Jimmy’Z denim and neoprene fashions, we’ve always had a hankering for the fashions of wave riders. The body con silhouettes, bold color-blocking, heavy duty hard-ware and stitch details of a surfers uniform lend perfect details for everyday wear. This Summer be bold with pieces taking influence from those that hang-10 and you’ll be hanging tough clad in a neoprene dream. Whether you get inspired by actual surfer’s garb…why not rock a rash guard with a mini and heels?  Or go the design inspired route with ankle booties from Pierre Hardy, you’ll be happy to try something new. If your coordination is best left to surfing the “www” and not the open seas, you’re in luck this season because you can dress the part of a Big Kahuna without the fear of a wipe out.

Day 1 of the tradeshow hustle included everything from Chanel to Jeremy Scott to vintage to the most loved Doc Marten’s. Comfort is key when doing this dance. You are on your feet for hours! So unless you’ve been hired to be a tradeshow “model,” we suggest leaving the heels at the hotel . . . your feet will thank you later.

M.I.S.S. February 2009: “For The Love of Sneaker-Heels”

Love them or hate them. The sneaker heel has seen it’s comeback in recent years. We know there are those that wish they would go back and never come back but if done proper they’re kinda cute, right? We here at M.I.S.S. love kicks but we also LOVE LOVE LOVE Heels . . . and the higher the better! So the sneaker-heel is almost a match made in heaven. With that (hopefully!) “romantic” holiday right around the corner we thought we’d dress up M.I.S.S. February a bit. As sexy as ya wanna be and with a mani that will certainly get you noticed, make your guy or gal a weak link in your chain this Valentine’s Day.

Sneak Peek: Levi’s Helps DKNY Celebrate 20 Years

Levi’s helps DKNY Celebrate 20 Years.

Levi’s helps DKNY Celebrate 20 Years.

Donna Karan launched DKNY 20 years ago, and it all started with a pair of jeans.  To celebrate it’s 20th Anniversary, DKNY has teamed up Levi’s to create 3 new styles:  a wide leg, skinny jean and boyfriend style. Patti Cohen, the executive vice president of global marketing and communications at Donna Karan International stated, “For our 20th birthday we wanted to celebrate this milestone with a unique American icon.”  Each style is available in different washes including white, black, dark and light blue.   The new collection will hit shelves in the next few weeks at Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, Lord & Taylor and Macy’s and retail for $225.  I think this collaboration makes perfect sense – two iconic American brands working together to create an iconic American closet staple – the perfect pair of jeans.  I’m looking forward to seeing these in person and I hope DKNY was able to tweak the fit a bit since Levi’s tend to fit a bit awkwardly.  Knowing DK, she surely put her personal touch on it.
