Fashion Meets Music: 2009 MTV VMA’s

Best Dressed at MTV VMAs
The morning after the MTV Video Music Awards, lets recap. The red carpet was sparkling with many stars opting for silver metallic dresses. Favorites rockin the trend were Katy Perry, Leighton Meester, and Kristen Cavallari. Speaking of rockers, Pink stormed in on a fire truck with husband Carey Hart minutes after Shakira walked the carpet wearing the same leather studded mini dress. All was well, and as the show moved inside, the opening tribute to the late Michael Jackson was incredible. Janet’s dance sequence while performing “Scream” evoked the sentiments of a sister saddened by loss, but empowered through their passion for music and dance. Did anyone catch Lauri Ann Gibson and Cris Judd dancing? K-Fed was busy working out.

Pink and Shakira VMA's

Not to be detered by a belligerent Kanye West interrupting her acceptance speech for Best Female in a Video, Taylor Swift delivered a beautiful performance of “You Belong With Me.” The night belonged to the ladies, Beyonce proves again that she is the baddest lady in the game and her performance of “Single Ladies” was on point. Pink performed “Sober” with a heart shaped pastie without stepping one toe on the stage. Only Pink can make swinging from a trapeze look effortless. Lady Gaga brought her aggressive avant garde persona to the stage with “Paparazzi” sure it was shocking, but hey, it’s entertainment.

VMA Fashion Meets Music

As we were looking at the fashion last night it was clear that metallics dresses were everywhere, loved the color choices from Beyonce and Amerie, and the little black dresses were well played with accessories and shoes. Just a few comments, the DJ AM tribute from Kid Cudi, Wale, and UCB should have been on the main stage and where was Rhianna? Congrats to Matt and Kim for Breakthrough Video. Here’s our roundup of some of the best looks of the night, and a few of the worst for good measure.

Breaking News: DJ AM Found Dead

R.I.P. DJ AM

The music world is suffering another shocking loss today– news has just broke that popular DJ AM has passed away today at the age of 36. The celebrity DJ, who narrowly escaped death less than 11 months ago after surviving a plane crash with friend Travis Barker, was found dead in his Manhattan apartment around 5:20 pm EST this afternoon. The causes of his death are not yet known, but NYPD is reporting that drug paraphernalia was found in AM’s apartment on Lafayette Street.

Born Adam Goldstein, the entertainer was known for scratching for the likes of Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lopez and Jay Z. He was contracted to spin at several prominent Las Vegas nightclubs, including Pure, and was also a co-owner of the nationally known hotspot LAX. Probably known as much for his skills in the booth as he was for his tabloid love life, DJ AM was previously engaged to Nicole Richie and dated Mandy Moore, who rushed to be by his side in September after he suffered scarring burns due to a plane crash. Beyond his love life, AM was a fixture in the fashion and sneakerhead scenes, often commenting on sneaker forums such as NikeTalk.com. He was most recently seen in a Nike commercial for the Kanye West Air Yeezy’s, alongside Mike Epps and Kobe Bryant.

Although DJ AM was reportedly bouncing back from his tragic plane crash, his apparent drug overdose seems to indicate that he had fallen back on previous addiction habits. The DJ, who often spoke candidly about his struggles in life from addiction to romance and gastric bypass surgery, will be remembered for always keeping the music bumping and the party alive. Indeed, his last Twitter post was a line from a Grandmaster Flash song: “New york, New York/ Big city of dreams/ But everything in New York ain’t always what it seems”.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this difficult time.
